BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
***[UPDATE***] prosecutors in the “Rust” fatal shooting case plan to file a notice to dismiss involuntary manslaughter charges against Alec Baldwin, his attorney says. In a statement, the Special Prosecutor on the Santa Fe, New Mexico case said: “It is not appropriate for me to make extra judicial comments at this time….The dismissal against Mr. Baldwin will be temporary pending further investigation.” The decision to dismiss charges against Baldwin is being made after new evidence came to the attention of investigators indicating the gun used in the shooting had been modified, a source familiar with the investigation told CNN.

★ There has been no communication between Prince Harry and Prince William in the lead-up to their father’s coronation, says a Palace insider. According to a People story, the relationship between the brothers remains tense as the 2 are set to reunite at the coronation of King Charles. Although Buckingham Palace announced last week that the Duke of Sussex will attend his father’s crowning ceremony on May 6, the rift between him and the rest of the royal family remains — evidenced by Prince Harry not seeing King Charles or Prince William during his surprise visit to London last month. The souce is quoted as saying: “Things are strained” and Harry’s participation in the historic event will do little to ease tensions.

That doesn’t mean John Dutton will have a heart attack, but according to the sources, Costner’s character will die early into the new episodes, with the remainder of Season 5 playing out the repercussions from his death.

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A teenager had to be rescued from inside a large claw game after he climbed in to steal a prize. The incident occurred at the Carowinds theme park in Charlotte NC, where a spokesperson said they were made aware of a 13-year-old male who climbed into a claw machine called the Cosmic XL Bonus Game. The game is about 6½ feet tall, and nearly 5 feet wide, making it much bigger than the average claw game. A medical response team was summoned, which unlocked the machine, and the boy climbed out. (Now don’t go laughing at this kid. I mean, aren’t there some things you did as a teen that…well, actually, this IS pretty funny!)
➢ A Chinese couple visiting South Korea took revenge on the Airbnb host who refused to cancel their booking by using over 120 tonnes of water as well as thousands of dollars worth of gas, electricity and other utilities. At first, owner noticed nothing out of the ordinary about his guests, other than them asking him if there were any surveillance cameras. Little did he know that they were plotting their revenge. It was only after their 25-day booking had ended that the gas company contacted the owner about the sharp increase in consumption, leaving him to cover massive utility bills. He later learned that the couple had used enough water for 8 adults to use for 2 months, plus huge amounts of electricity. (For a very similar reason, I no longer rent a room to students!)

HOME MARKET:
So much for the old real estate saying “Location, location, location”. To today’s younger homebuyers, curb appeal is the most important factor when choosing a home. In a poll of 2,000 adults in the US, Gen Z (47%) and millennials (46%) were more likely to cite appearance – like the color of the home, decks, and balconies – as a reason for buying than Gen X (35%) and baby boomers (30%). Younger generations were also more likely to purchase their home based on its architecture and style, with 46% of Gen Zers and 43% of millennials doing so, compared to 30% of Gen Xers and 23% of boomers. And just in case you’re looking, make this a part of your budget: the average homeowner encounters about 4 “surprises” within the first year of homeownership, spending around $3,600 to address them.
(The first surprise we got when we bought our first home was twins. And we’re STILL paying for them!)
(I think location is most important. You can always paint a house, but it’s tough to move it!)

HOW TO STOP SNORING:
People who snore are twice as likely to suffer a stroke, according to a recent study from the University of Galway in Ireland. With that in mind, here are 5 suggestions to help you stop:
1. Avoid alcohol: Boozy nights out often lead to sleepless, snore-filled slumber. Alcohol has a sedative effect, which relaxes the jaw and throat muscles, making an obstruction in your airway more likely. (Well, it sounds like my wife isn’t getting any sleep for the next 2 nights…!)
2. Sleep on your side: Doing so, rather than your back, can prevent the base of your tongue collapsing into the back wall of your throat. (The problem is that while I always START on my side, where I wind up after a half hour is anybody’s guess!)
3. Try a snoring pillow: Sleeping on a pillow which sufficiently supports your head and neck can help, as it can prevent your airways becoming blocked.
4. Stay within a healthy weight range: Excess fatty tissue around the neck and poor muscle tone can contribute to the problem. Taking steps to reduce excess pounds can help keep you from honking in the night.
5. Keep a sleep diary: This can help identify what factors are helping and hindering your sleep and snoring. Keep track of sleep times, how many times you wake in the night, the food and drink you’ve consumed throughout, screen time, and activity. After a month, you’ll be able to see any trends that may affect your snoring or restfulness. (JUST what I needed: Sleep homework!)
(Alternate plan for stopping snoring [which I’ve shamefully spoken under my breath in the middle of a sleepless night when my wife just won’t quit honking]: “JUST. STOP. BREATHING!”)

DID YOU KNOW?
University of Queensland scientists say they’ve figured out why we sometimes forget what we’re doing when walking into a new room. While previous studies have found that walking through a doorway creates a new episode or “event boundary”, making it more difficult to recall our purpose. The new research determined that passing through doorways that joined identical rooms usually didn’t impact memory – perhaps because there wasn’t enough of a changed context to create an event boundary. It was only when these researchers distracted their volunteers, that the doorways between identical rooms affected memory. The team says this falls in line with the theory that it’s mostly when we’re distracted that we’re likely to arrive in a room and forget what we came for. (Finally! An explanation of the ‘hereafter’ – as in “What was it that I came in hereafter?”)

BS CHRONOMETER 04.21.23
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Kindergarten Day”, honoring the 1782 birth of German educator Friedrich Froebel, who established the first kindergarten in 1837. (Thanks for all the finger paintings, Freid.) BS FAST FACT: The word ‘kindergarten’ literally means “garden of children” in German.
• “Chocolate Covered Cashews Day”, The cashew is a tree from the family Anacardiaceae. Surprisingly, the shell of the cashew nut is toxic, which is why the cashew is shelled before it is sold to consumers.
• “Keep Off the Grass Day”, can mean different things to different folks. This green holiday is observed in-between two momentous events – the day before Earth Day, and the day after 4/20. Coincidence?
• “Big Word Day”, a day to use humongous words on purpose just to impress yourself. So, go ahead and facilitate this celebration of excess verbiage! (But I was taught never to use a tremendous word when a diminutive one will suffice!) [Find a big word for any word here … https://www.bigwords.com/bigwordslist ]
• “Bulldogs are Beautiful Day”, in 2005, Jackie Valent published the children’s book “Stinky the Bulldog”, and she created Bulldogs are Beautiful Day in 2007. Since bulldogs are a little different looking, she hoped the day would help people look beyond appearance and accept those who are a little different.
• “Lyrid Meteor Shower”, peaks late tonight through dawn, and tomorrow night. It may be possible to see 10-15 shooting stars per hour.
SATURDAY-
• “Earth Day”, the 53rd anniversary of the international celebration of the planet we all call home. Begun in 1970, it’s now the largest environmental event worldwide. LINK: http://www.earthday.org
• “Girl Guide/Scout Leader Appreciation Day”, observed since 1982 to honor the many adult volunteers who help keep the program running. Thanks, ‘Brown Owl’!
• “Jelly Bean Day”, Originally, they only came in a few colors, but now you can get them in lip-smacking flavors like Toasted Marshmallow, Café Latte, and Piña Colada. LINK: https://www.jellybelly.ca/flavours-english
• “April Showers Day”, to enhance the celebration of May Flowers Day next month. We could use a good rain, as they say.
• “Record Store Day”, inaugurated in 2007 and held every April and every Black Friday in November to “celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store”. A number of records are pressed specifically for Record Store Day, and are exclusively available for purchase at local shops (as if anyone else sells records anymore…) LINK: https://recordstoreday.com/
• “In God We Trust” Day”, on this date in 1864, Congress passed an act allowing for “In God We Trust” to appear on US coins. That same year, it appeared on the newly minted 2-cent piece, and was soon used on other coins.
SUNDAY-
• “Cherry Cheesecake Day”, because you’ve been adhering to that strict diet for far too long.
• “Lost Dog Awareness Day”, focusing on the huge number of lost dogs around the world, and the efforts undertaken by organizations to help reunite pets with owners. LINK: http://tinyurl.com/nftesr6
• “Take a Chance Day”, Some things just won’t happen without a little risk. Today is as good a day as any to take that risk. Do you want to be safe and good, or do you want to take a chance and be great?
• “Talk Like Shakespeare Day”, observed on the anniversary of the bard’s birth (and his death at age 52). TIPS FOR TALKING LIKE SHAKESPEARE: Instead of “you,” say “thou.” Instead of “y’all,” say “thee.” “Thy”, “Thine” and “Ye” are all good pronouns, too. Men are “sirrah,” ladies are “mistress,” and your friends are all called “cousin.” And to add weight to your opinions, start them with “methinks”, “mayhaps”, “in sooth”, or “wherefore”.
• “Nose Picking Day”, I’m not sure why, but I do know (***co-host***) has been practising for this for a LOOONG time!
• “World Book & Copyright Day”, declared annually by UNESCO to promote reading and books on the death anniversary of both William Shakespeare, and Miguel de Cervantes in 1616.
• “World Laboratory Day”, celebrating the place where great discoveries, inventions, and medical cures are born. (And where mad scientists dwell.)
• “English Language Day”, celebrating the date in 1362 when the Chancellor of the UK opened Parliament with a speech in English for the first time, a landmark in its development as a world language. English is now considered by many to be THE world language, and is often the second language of choice in non-English countries. (Ever notice how some of us think that all foreigners should understand English if we just speak it loudly enough?)
