Can You Believe This Sheet?

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

★ Ryan Reynolds will be the 36th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award. In the announcement, AC Board Chair Rick Nicita said: “Ryan Reynolds is a Renaissance Man 2.0 for our times. He is an actor, a business entrepreneur, a writer, a comedian, a producer and a creative innovator on screen and off…and most important, a true movie star. Reynolds will be honored at a ceremony at The Beverly Hilton on Nov. 17, an annual fundraiser for the non-profit organization.

★ “Fast & Furious” director Justin Lin will no longer direct the franchise’s next installment “Fast X”. Just days after filming film began last week, Lin has announced his decision to “step back as director.” Lin, who co-wrote the film, and directed 5 others in the franchise, said he will remain involved as a producer. While Lin did not provide a reason, sources say “the parting was amicable between both parties” and Lin “ultimately decided to step away from the franchise due to creative differences.”

★ Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley might be done for real this time. After rekindling their romance a few months back, the A-list couple has apparently broken up once again. The couple briefly split in February, after about 2 years of dating and an engagement, but that didn’t last long, as they were spotted out together shortly after ending the relationship. Rogers took Woodley to his Green Bay teammate David Bakhtiari’s California wedding at the beginning of March. The NFL MVP also shared a mushy Instagram post with Woodley, thanking her for showing him “what unconditional love looks like.” But that was then. Then couple has recently split again, according to multiple reports.

★ We know you’ve been pining away in your room, waiting for the day Chris Pratt will finally get to say such iconic lines as “It’s a-me, Mario!” and “Wahoo!” but you’re going to have to wait a bit longer than expected. The upcoming animated movie adaptation of the Super Mario Bros. video games, featuring the voice of Pratt as ‘Mario’ and Charlie Day as ‘Luigi’, has been delayed. After initially being scheduled to hit theaters this December, it is now set for a spring 2023 release.

SHOOTING THE BULL

‘SCAM-INN’ PEOPLE:
A TikTok’er is warning people about a hotel room-service scam that cost a family $6,000. Ali Koca of Toronto told his 1.8 million followers that a family was staying at a hotel, and ordered room service using the dad’s debit card. In the clip, which has racked up almost 2 million views, Koca shares the family’s story in front of an image of a Holiday Inn Express, although the location of the incident hasn’t been made public. The story is that after calling to place a food order and providing the info from dad’s card, the family waited over 90 minutes before finally calling the front desk to ask where their order was. They were told an order from their room was never received. That’s when the man logged into his banking app to find more than $6,000 was missing from his account. It turned out that the room service menu they had ordered from was a fake, that had been slipped under their door by scammers. Koca went on to say” “Once you call and give them your card info, they can login to your account and take out all the money they want.” Online commenters agreed, saying this trick is more common than you’d expect.
(Definitely the most-overpriced hotel food I’ve ever heard of – but it’s close!)
(Hey, if they can get through all the security and password checks on my bank’s website, they deserve the $37 bucks I have in there…!)
(Well, that was a not-so “suite” place to stay!)

RED, WHITE AND FLUTE:
Red or white wine? Well, perhaps your choice depends on what ails you. A recent study found that the color of your wine benefits your health in different ways. Iowa State University researchers also found that drinking either red or white wine is a healthier option than consuming beer or spirits. How? They determined that beer and booze both lead to higher levels of visceral fat – the more harmful type that wraps around organs and can cause heart disease and other problems. The study found that consuming wine did not lead to the same buildup of visceral fat, and drinking red wine actually contributes to having less. In addition to not influencing the growth of visceral fat, white wine was found to contribute to having stronger bones among older drinkers, compared to those opting for red wine or beer. And remember, while some reports have found that even a single glass of alcohol shrinks the brain, others have found that red wine does everything from improving gut health to lowering diabetes risk.
(I’m assuming the scientists reached their conclusions on a “case by case” basis?)
(Maybe wine IS better for you than beer or booze, but I’m not willing to risk it!)

IMMACULATE CONTRACEPTION:
Researchers say they have discovered a potential new form of “on-demand” birth control for women. Stanford University experts have had “promising results” in experiments using a combination of the morning-after pill and an arthritis drug to “disrupt ovulation at peak fertility”. The last-minute contraceptive cocktail “may be the best candidate” for a birth control option taken orally just prior to sex. For the study, 9 women were given a one-time dose of ulipristal acetate — a morning-after pill — and 30 milligrams of meloxicam — an arthritis drug — during the luteal surge, or the days leading up to ovulation, when it is hardest to disrupt. The research concluded that ovulation was disrupted in 6 of the women, with 8 meeting some criteria for incomplete ovulation.
(Uh, I’m no expert, but I’m gonna say we need to do better than 6 out of 9 for this thing to fly!)
That’s not a very good average. But on the other hand, I still have my personality as a back-up!)

SMALL DETAILS TO WATCH FOR BEFORE MARRYING SOMEONE:
(According to an “AskReddit” thread…)
✗ “Getting along with the partner’s parents…My in-laws treated me like an outsider throughout my 18-year marriage.”
✗ “How they treat strangers — like waiters, customers, taxi drivers, etc. It says a lot about their character.”
✗ “Has your partner ever apologized to you, or do they have to ‘win’ every argument? If neither of you can’t admit wrongness or bend at all, that’s a terrible sign for your future.”
✗ “Your partner’s relationship with money and finances.” (Yeah, that might not be a “small” detail…)
✗ “Their everyday reaction to your presence. Do they look up at you when you enter a room? Do they smile, or do they ignore you?”
✗ “How do you each like to spend your downtime? Do you share hobbies like the same types of shows or movies?…It’s important to make sure that you can comfortably just coexist together
✗ “Don’t marry someone until you’ve seen them stressed, or until your relationship has been stressed.”
✗ “Travel together for at least a week…A quick way to gauge all of the small things that could be considered before deciding to commit with someone is to share personal space in a place that is outside both of your comfort zones.”
✗ “As someone who does couples counseling: Kids and parenting. Kids are ‘literally’ small things that get overlooked in the discussion.
✗ “The cleanliness of the person’s house. If you feel the urge to wipe counters and pick things up while you’re over there, do you want to spend the rest of your life picking up after this person?”
✗”My policy is to reach out to at least a couple of exes. I created this policy after falling for the ‘all of my exes were crazy’ thing. In my case, he had major, major issues, and the consequences for me were significant.” (Of course, an ex tends to be a little biased…)

BS CHRONOMETER 04.28.22

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day”, for parents take the kids to work with them for one day. It is designed to inspire children to explore the workforce. It also helps them to see the different roles required to run a business or to build a project. (“Gee, Mom, since the pandemic, your workplace looks an awful lot like our living room. Oh, wait. It is…”)
• “Blueberry Pie Day”, ushering in blueberry pie-making season, which lasts until September. The first documented recipe for blueberry pie appeared in the Appledore Cook Book in 1872. Blueberries are abundant in Maine, so it’s no surprise that blueberry pie is the state’s official dessert.
• “Poetry Reading Day”, a day to ‘read some great poetry, the world better to see.’ (“There once was a girl from St John’s …”)
• “National Superhero Day”, a day to honor superheroes, both real and fictional. Batman, Superman, Spider-Man and Wonder Woman are fictional, but still are great role models for children Deadpool? Not so much… (Which team are you? Marvel or DC? Or no preference, ’cause you’re not a nerd?)
• “National Cubicle Day”, the cubicle was introduced in 1968 as an alternative to working in open areas, often called bullpens. It had flexible configurations with partitions to pin up current projects and provide privacy – sort of. (Or as cubicles have come to be known to some – ‘Hell with fluorescent lighting…’)
• “Clean Comedy Day”, celebrating this more family-friendly form of comedy by challenging us to keep our humor clean for a day, and enjoy it all the same. (Are they trying to ruin my reputation?)
• “Thank You Thursday”, a great opportunity to start making positive change by recognizing the people in your life who make things easier, those who love you, and those who just make your day better by giving a smile and a friendly hello. (Or, better yet: cookies!)
