Tomorrow’s Show Prep Today!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Multiple arrests have been made following an investigation into Matthew Perry’s death. Law enforcement sources told TMZ that at least one doctor and several dealers who helped arrange and deliver ketamine to the late “Friends” star have been taken into custody. Search warrants resulted in the seizure of computers, phones and other electronic equipment to determine who supplied Perry with the illegally obtained ketamine that caused him to lose consciousness and drown in his hot tub last October. An insider says that multiple people could be charged in the case.

★ “It Ends With Us” director and star Justin Baldoni has hired a crisis PR manager, amid rumors of a behind-the-scenes rift with co-star Blake Lively. Baldoni has signed on with Melissa Nathan, who runs The Agency Group, which has previously worked with high-profile clients like Drake, Johnny Depp, Logan Paul and more. This comes as Baldoni and Lively have been placed at the center of feud rumors amid the press tour for the movie. In a recent interview, Baldoni admitted “there’s always friction” when making movies, and “it’s that friction, I believe, that creates the beautiful art.”

★ Kaley Cuoco and Tom Pelphrey’s relationship is reaching new heights. The “Flight Attendant” star and the “Ozark” actor—who have been together for 2 years and share 15-month-old Matilda—are officially engaged. Cuoco shared the news by posting a photo with her fiancé and her new ring on Instagram Story. Both followed up their big news with photos showing them walking with their hands linked, and a family photo of the parents squeezing their toddler in an embrace between them. ★ Rob Schneider is apologizing to his daughter Elle King after she publicly accused him of being a bad dad. The former “SNL” actor says he’s sorry he wasn’t the father she needed growing up. During an interview with Tucker Carlson, Schneider addressed their strained relationship and wished his daughter nothing but the best. He admitted he wasn’t a good father when King was a child, and asked for forgiveness. She went on record earlier, saying he sent her to “fat camp” and forgot her birthdays.

★ Hallmark has set a September 10 launch date for its new streaming service. “Hallmark+” doubles as both a streaming service for Hallmark programming, as well as a membership rewards program. It will launch with the premiere of several new Hallmark series, including “The Chicken Sisters,” based on the novel of the same name, and “Celebrations With Lacey Chabert,” which marks Hallmark’s entrance into unscripted programming. Hallmark+ subscribers will also have access to Hallmark VIP Movie Pass features. Plans start at $7.99 a month.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Joe Jonas – reports that his new solo album is “packed” with duets. Quote: “A lot of this album is speaking in third person or having a conversation with a fictional version of myself, or a fictional person in my life. And being able to have that [other] voice create that was really special.” He hasn’t revealed who the duets are with. “Music for People Who Believe in Love” drops Oct. 18.
• Katy Perry — Her record company claims she did sercure the necessary permits to shoot the video for her new single ‘Lifelines’ on protected sand dunes in Spain. Authorities said they have launched an investigation because she allegedly filmed in Ses Salines Natural Park “without requesting authorization.”
• Janet Jackson – revealed in a BBC2 interview that she has some surprising relatives. In the chat, she was asked if she is related to Stevie Wonder. Her answer: “He’s our cousin on my mother’s side. So is Tracy Chapman. So is Samuel Jackson.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yfhk7pxp
• Jack White – is planning a tour, but won’t be giving fans much warning of shows. He posted: “Lotta folks asking about when we are going to announce ‘tour dates’. Well, we don’t know what to tell you but the tour already started.” He has played a few surprise gigs, and said that these ‘Pop up shows’ “are the shows”. The plan is to play at “small clubs, back yard fetes, and a few festivals here and there.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/363k4xh9
• The Band — The all-star tribute to Robbie Robertson is going on the road. The “Life Is a Carnival: Last Waltz Tour ’24” launches 2 days after the previously announced Oct. 17 show in LA, featuring Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Jamey Johnson, Don Was and others. 18 US shows are now scheduled, plus one in Toronto on Nov. 16.
• Post Malone – His first country album “F-1 Trillion” finally drops today, but it has already reached a big milestone. Chart Data reports that the album had (pre)sold more than 500,000 units domestically as of Monday, enough to achieve RIAA Gold status. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2j2sezbe
• Zach Bryan, Beyoncé, Kacey Musgraves and Shaboozey — are the most-nominated acts for the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards. All are relative newcomers to the country genre, or artists whose work was historically included genre boundary-pushing or experimentation. Other non-trad acts with the most noms include Jelly Roll, Kane Brown and Morgan Wallen. The PCCAs are Sept. 26. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2mv5pc4r

MOBILE HOMES:
A Toronto man has come up with his possible solution to the homelessness crisis. Ryan Donais put together a prototype of a tiny house on wheels – attached to a bicycle. His “Tiny Tiny Homes” are intended to give those who are unhoused the ability to live comfortably – and move around. The builder was inspired by the wooden shelters that cropped up around the city in the earlier years of the pandemic, but thought he could improve on the idea by giving users the autonomy of being able to transport their homes – and themselves – at will. As he put it, unlike a tent or an encampment: “If they happen to wear out their welcome where they’re at, they can move along.” The Tiny Tiny Home includes a sofa, which folds into a bed, a butane cooktop, a fire and carbon monoxide detector, a fire extinguisher, and a solar panel that powers a lithium battery, to run the lights, fan and power inside. Future models will include heating and a portable toilet. He spent $5,000 of his own money (and 8 Saturdays) to building the prototype, and is in the process of crowdfunding to move into production. (Actually, the way the housing market is, this guy may find he has a lot more people interested than just the homeless!)
(I guess ‘Tiny Tiny Homes’ is better than the first name that popped into my mind: “Cycle of Homelessness”!)

THE FORGETFUL TRAVELER:
Have you had a chance to get away yet this summer? While pretty much everyone can agree that there’s nothing like embarking on a vacation trip, the sad reality is that at some point in your journey, you’ll probably realize that you’ve forgotten something. According to a survey, 90% of adult travelers have had that moment when they notice that an essential item didn’t make the trip with them. According to the poll of 2,000 Americans, the most inconvenient things people have forgotten include socks (17%), water bottles (14%) and even their wallet (8%). 27% have left behind their sunscreen, and 18% even forgot to pack their medications. The survey also revealed that nearly 40% of us seem to be more forgetful than usual when traveling, with, on average, 3 items being left behind on every trip. The good news is that 23% said they have a “mom friend” when traveling, who keeps supplies on hand, such as napkins or band-aids, and reminds everyone to do important things like eat and stay hydrated.
(Eating and staying hydrated are the only things that I’d NEVER forget while on vacation!)
(I’m pretty sure my wife forgets some things ON PURPOSE when we go away, just so she’ll have to buy a new one. “Oh, my goodness, it seems I forgot my first-generation Kindle! And my AirPods…and all my jewellery!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A former food service director at a school district in the Chicago area has been sentenced to 9 years in prison after admitting she stole $1.5 million worth of…chicken wings. Vera Liddell was convicted of theft and operating a criminal enterprise. The 68-year-old stole the mounds of meat intended to be take-home meals for students learning remotely during pandemic lockdowns. Court records show that Liddell ordered more than 11,000 cases of chicken wings from the school district’s food provider and picked up the order in a cargo van. The food was never brought to the school or given to students. The business manager for the district found the invoices for the chicken wings to be odd, because it is a food item that wouldn’t be served to students because they contain bones. (She was given 9 years, but will probably only serve 4½, because she was sentenced on “two for one wing day”!)
➢ Cops in St. Petersburg FL were called to a report of a disturbance at a residence. Upon arrival, they found a messy scene. The walls and floor had red spatters all over them, as did the victim’s hair. Yup — spaghetti sauce sure makes a big mess. The victim, the sauce-hurling assailant’s mother, told police her son had become upset and had thrown his Sunday supper bowl of spaghetti at her. 41-year-old Anthony Fiacco fled the scene when cops arrived – and attempted to hide behind a bush in the backyard. He was quickly taken into custody and charged with domestic battery and resisting an officer. BTW, this isn’t his first run-in with the law. He has a previous conviction for “throwing a deadly missile into a building.” The missile in question? An empty Heineken that bottle he hurled after being asked to leave a party. A judge has banned him from contact with his mother. (And placed him on a soft-food diet!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Australian Olympian and now-cult figure Rachel ‘Raygun’ Gunn, who went viral thanks to her almost non-existent breaking skills at the Paris Games, may have danced her way to millionaire status, experts say. That is, of course, if she wants any more attention. Gunn’s unexpected rise to fame, or infamy, depending on who you ask, came when, despite not securing a single vote from the judges across breakdancing battles, her participation sparked controversy and admiration, cementing her status as an Aussie cult icon. Marketing and public relations expert Max Markson said that Gunn already possesses “an enormous brand” and could potentially earn millions through international deals. (Better her than the Hawk Tuah Girl – I think!)

BS CHRONOMETER 08.16.24

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Bratwurst Day”, celebrating the spiced sausage usually enjoyed on a roll with mustard, or by itself with a side of sauerkraut. The term ‘bratwurst’ is a compound of 2 German words – ‘braten’, meaning ‘fried’; and ‘wurst’, which means ‘sausage’.
• “Roller Coaster Day”, celebrating every amusement park’s fast-track to fun. The idea for the roller coaster was first patented by LaMarcus Adna Thompson on this date in 1885.
• “Tell a Joke Day”, an excuse to fill your workday with chuckles and laughs . . . and the occasional groan. Here are the rules for telling a joke…properly:
➠ Before you open your mouth, know your joke. Even if you’re ad-libbing, you must have a clear idea of where you’re headed.
➠ Know your audience. All jokes are not appropriate for all gatherings.
➠ Do not ask permission to tell a joke. Surprise is crucial.
➠ Do not tell everyone how funny your joke is beforehand.
➠ There must be ample set-up to the joke, providing the pertinent details the audience needs to know.
➠ There must be a punchline or strong conclusion.
➠ Avoid detours. As a rule, jokes work best in a straight line.
➠ Commit to your joke. Once you begin, follow through to the end. (Then, pray like hell that someone laughs…)
• “Rum Day”, celebrating the distilled clear alcoholic beverage, which is a by-product of molasses production, or made directly from sugar cane juice. (It’s also a day that gives you an excuse to say “Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!”)
• “Kool-Aid Days” begin, the annual weekend celebration of the soft drink mix originally made in Hastings, Nebraska. Edwin E. Perkins first marketed the stuff in 1927, in 6 flavors (raspberry, cherry, grape, lemon, orange, and root-beer). “Oh, yeah!”
• “Airborne Day”, designated by US Congress to honor the airborne division of the Armed Forces. (NOT a day to celebrate those who are bad at lighting BBQs!)
• “True Love Forever Day”, a day for those who have that feeling of love — to show it to and share it with each other (because Valentine’s Day wasn’t enough?)

SATURDAY:

• “Baby Boomers Recognition Day”, a day to commemorate the accomplishments of those born between 1946 and 1964. The oldest ‘boomers’ are now 78. (‘OK, Boomer!’ …or is that totally a ‘boomer’ thing to say now?)
• “Black Cat Appreciation Day”, an annual event encouraging the adoption of black, and black & white cats. Like black dogs, they are usually the least popular choice at animal shelters.
• “Thrift Shop Day”. What’s the best deal you ever found in one? Our list includes Pierre Cardin and Oscar de la Renta jackets, a solid walnut coffee table, and a roll-top desk. (If I ever opened a thrift shop, it would definitely be called “Stranger’s Things”!)
• “#2 Pencil Day”. If it’s the most popular pencil, why isn’t it #1?
• “Vanilla Custard Day”. A sweet pudding-like dish made with vanilla, eggs, sugar, and milk, it can be enjoyed on its own, or as a topping for other desserts.
• “I Love My Feet Day”, saluting the appendage most models say is their ugliest feature.
LINK: http://www.ilovemyfeetdays.com
• “World Honey Bee Day”, recognizing both the honey bee and the beekeepers who tend hives. It also encourages everyone to buy and enjoy locally produced honey.
• “Nonprofit Day”, recognizing the goals and positive impacts non-profits have on communities — and on the world.

SUNDAY:
• “Bad Poetry Day”, a day to compose a really-rotten rhyme as revenge against all that ‘good poetry’ you were forced to study in school. (But remember: All poets write bad poetry. Bad poets publish them, good poets burn them.)
• “Fajita Day”, originally made from throwaway cuts of beef by Mexican vaqueros in Southwest Texas, the fajita was developed as a regional staple in the early 1930s. These cowboys cooked the steak over an open fire or grill and served it with flour or corn tortillas.
• “Mail Order Catalog Day”, it’s a publication, not unlike a magazine, that lists items available to buy from a business, and their prices (Old-school Amazon?).
• “Serendipity Day”. According to author Madeleine Kay, serendipity is “the willingness to live your life as if everything is a miracle…with the belief that at any moment, something wonderful is about to happen.” Serendipity is also recognized as one of the most beautiful words in the English language.
• “Never Give Up Day”, a celebration day focused on cultivating a mindset of determination. This day not only applauds people for reaching their goals, it also supports those who are still trying to achieve theirs. LINK: https://www.nevergiveupday.com/
• “Pinot Noir Day”, named for the dark color of the grapes, and the pine-cone shaped clusters they grow in on the vine. Showing a strong preference for cooler climates, the grape of the same name is grown primarily in Burgundy, France. (Sorry if I sound extra “winey” today…)
• “Helium Discovery Day”. It was this date in 1868 that French astronomer Pierre Jules César Janssen discovered the gas, which is now used to fill balloons and make human voices sound ridiculous. Helium is also crucial for things like the flight of airships, in MRI scanners, rockets, solar telescopes, and arc welding. (And getting laughs at kids’ birthday parties!)
