★ Tonight Justin Timberlake steps in to host a Hillary Clinton fundraiser after Leonardo DiCaprio had to pull out. Leo was due to hold an event at his Los Angeles CA home but after discovering he’d be stuck in NYC until Wednesday to finish his current project, asked Justin and his wife Jessica Biel to step in. They immediately agreed to fill in as hosts and moved the event to their home.

★ For the first time, “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies are going to be available to purchase together. On November 1st, the “Middle-Earth Six-Film Collection” is being released, available in 2 different editions. The “Theatrical Versions” collection, with all the films in their original theatrical form is priced at $35.99. The “Limited Collector’s Edition”, with 30 discs of content including the extended versions of each film, bound in faux leather books on a Hobbit-esque wood shelf will set you back … $799.99.

★ “American Idol” is receiving this year’s ‘Governors Award’ from the Television Academy, which honors achievement in television beyond the scope of a traditional Emmy Award. The singing competition series created by Simon Fuller ran for 15 seasons on FOX-TV, ending its run last May. Over the years, the show has also produced superstar talent like Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, and Kelly Clarkson. The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, air September 18th on ABC-TV.

★ And actress Mischa Barton has been ordered to pay $200,000-plus to screenwriter Daniel Lief after missing the start of a movie project because she was on vacation in Europe. Lief filed legal papers in September, accusing her of missing the start date of his 2014 film “Promoted”, in which she was slated to play the lead role. Lief says the production delay to the movie, which had to be recast, cost him more than $300,000. Now, a court has ordered the former “OC” actress to pay him more than $200,000 … plus interest.

• Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band – Tonight and Thursday “The River Tour” plays MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford NJ as part of a new string of dates. The new schedule wrap ups in Foxborough MA on September 14th at the New England Patriots’ Gillette Stadium.
• Dolly Parton – She once lost in a Dolly Parton look-alike contest.
• Guns N’ Roses – The “Not in This Lifetime” reunion tour is rolling on into 2017, as the rockers play Australia, Japan and New Zealand. The North American leg wrapped last night at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego CA. They next play South America in October-November.
• Justin Bieber – He’s said to be in talks to play a talented young footballer alongside soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in a reboot of the “Goal!” film franchise. It would be the Biebs first movie acting role, after previously doing only a cameo as himself in “Zoolander 2”. David Beckham is also reportedly in talks to appear as himself in the movie.
• Justin Moore – He has the leading country music album on today’s new ‘Billboard 200’ chart with “Kinda Don’t Care”. Moore has enjoyed 3 previous top 10 releases: “Off the Beaten Path” in 2013; “Outlaws Like Me” in 2011; and his self-titled set in 2009.
• Miranda Lambert – She’s gotten engaged to a 6-year-old boy. The 32-year-old accepted the proposal from the young fan at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium but told him he’d have to wait 25 years.
• Prince – Mislabelled pills have been found in his Paisley Park home, further explaining his self-administered fatal overdose at the age of 57. Some of the counterfeit samples that have been uncovered contain the dangerous synthetic opioid fentanyl.

In this follow-up, a war between rival queen sisters ‘Ravenna’ and ‘Freya’ escalates. Stars Chris Hemsworth, Jessica Chastain, Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt.
• “Maggie’s Plan” ( R-Rated Dramedy ): Greta Gerwig stars as a practical 30-something who, without success in finding love, decides now is the time to have a child on her own. But when she meets an anthropology professor and struggling novelist (Ethan Hawke), she falls in love for the first time, and adjusts her plans for motherhood. Co-stars Julianne Moore, Bill Hader.
• “The Nice Guys” ( R-Rated Action Comedy ): Russell Crowe & Ryan Gosling star as a mismatched pair of private eyes investigating the apparent suicide of a fading porn star in 1970s Los Angeles. Co-stars Angourie Rice, Matt Bomer. Think “Starsky & Hutch” meets “Boogie Nights”, plus a little bit of “Lethal Weapon” mixed in.
• “Ratchet & Clank” ( PG Animated Adventure ): When the galaxy comes under the threat of a nefarious space captain, a mechanic and his robot ally join an elite squad of combatants to save the universe. Voice cast includes James Arnold Taylor, David Kaye, Jim Ward, Sylvester Stallone. This adaptation of the popular videogame series is planned as a film franchise.

ELECTRIC GLIDE:
Drivers are generally leery of electric cars over the simple fear that the battery’s charge will run out and leave them stranded unexpectedly. But now researchers at MIT and the Santa Fe Institute say that this so-called ‘range anxiety’ is somewhat overblown. What they’ve found is that 87% of vehicles on the road today could be replaced by a low-cost electric vehicle even if there’s no possibility of a recharge during the day. The reason being, the average driver doesn’t go far on a typical workday. Drivers would still need to figure out alternatives on days when an EV vehicle wouldn’t do, such as long business trips or vacations. One researcher suggests car-sharing programs could help with that. (Too expensive. We’re waiting for teleportation.)

FAMILY TRUMPS FRIENDS?
Among seniors, close family relationships appear more important than friends in extending life, a new University of Toronto study finds. Older adults who are extremely close with family (other than spouses) have about a 6% risk of dying within the next 5 years, compared with about 14% among those who are not close to their family. Family appears to be more important than friendships because of what people expect from family – being taken care of when you are in ill health, for example. In contrast, friends are more likely to move in and out of your network, especially if you are not easy to be around. One expert disagrees, saying the definition of family needs to be expanded beyond blood or relationships by marriage. (What’s that old axiom … you can pick your friends but you can’t pick your family.)

BIRTHDAY WISH COME TRUE:
The lawyers who helped bring the song “Happy Birthday” into the public domain will be handsomely rewarded. A judge this week has awarded the legal team $4.6 million after last year’s successful copyright lawsuit. The money will come out of a $14 million class-action settlement being paid by music publisher Warner/Chappell. In the case, documentary filmmaker Jennifer Nelson sued the company after it charged her a $1,500 licensing fee for including the song in her film about its origins. A federal judge has ultimately concluded that Warner/Chappell’s claim on the copyright of the famous tune is dubious. (Warners would still like 50 bucks every time you sing “Auld Lang Syne” however.)

DANGER FOR DOGS:
Dog owners who enjoy throwing sticks for their pet in the park have been warned to stop. The British Veterinary Association is concerned that this simple pastime can cause painful injuries ranging from tongue splinters to the piercing of vital organs. No figures are available but a numerous vets say they regularly get stick injuries to dogs’ mouths. The fear mongers emphasize they don’t want people to stop owners from playing and exercising with their dogs, they just want them to further protect their pets by using safer dog toys. Labradors and border collies are said to be most likely to come down with injuries, as they are fast runners and enjoy games of fetch. (First we worried over kids playing outdoors, now it’s pets.)

DIVORCE SEASON COMING UP:
Are certain times of the year harder on a marriage? Maybe, suggests new University of Washington research that finds couples are more likely to file for divorce after vacation periods. The reason may be people tend to face holidays with rising expectations, despite what disappointments they might have had in the past. They represent periods of the year when there’s anticipation for a new beginning, something different. However, vacations can be stressful and emotionally-charged for struggling couples and actually widen fissures in their marriage. So when Summer vacations or the December holiday season don’t meet expectations, people often file for divorce. (The 1st Monday in January is said to be busiest for divorce lawyers.)
