★ 39-year-old actress Charlize Theron has adopted another child, according to a new report. The “Mad Max” star apparently adopted an African-American girl, named August, in July after working with an adoption agency for 6 months. The actress, who split from Sean Penn last month, adopted her son Jackson from South Africa in 2012.

★ Rumors are leaking out about Season 9 of “The Voice”, which premieres September 21st on NBC-TV. Word has it that Selena Gomez will join forces with Gwen Stefani as a mentor for her team, and Missy Elliott will be a mentor for Pharrell’s team. Recording veteran John Fogerty is apparently slated to assist Adam Levine, and country superstar Brad Paisley will mentor Blake Shelton’s singers.

★ Brooklyn Beckham, eldest son of David & Victoria Beckham, has reportedly just signed a modeling contract with a top agency. The 16-year-old made his modeling debut last year, appearing on the cover of “Man About Town” magazine. But rather than follow his parents into the world of sports or music and fashion, the teen is said to be planning a future career in Hollywood after impressing talent scouts in LA.

• The Beatles – Paul McCartney tells “Evening Standard” that he & John Lennon may have written dozens of songs that were never released … because they forgot them. They didn’t have portable recording devices so new tunes had to be memorized in their entirety or they were lost.
• Dolly Parton – She’s apparently writing a Charles Dickens-themed musical to be performed at her Dollywood amusement park this holiday season.
• Dr Dre – The hip hop veteran has revealed his new solo project “Compton: A Soundtrack”, to be released this Friday, will serve as his ‘grand finalé’. His first new album in 16 years is inspired by the biopic “Straight Outta Compton”, debuting August 14th.
• Hunter Hayes – He’s playing himself in an upcoming episode of Nickelodeon’s “Bella & The Bulldogs”, about a Texas cheerleader who is also the QB of her high school football team. No air date has been announced for the episode.
• Justin Bieber – Hillary Clinton has reportedly chosen to host her Hollywood presidential bid fundraiser at the home of Scooter Braun (aka Bieber’s manager).
• Miguel – His new album “Wildheart” has been labeled the ‘horniest of the Summer’ by “New York Post”. Even he says: “You don’t want to listen to it with Mom.”

THE AGE OF AQUARIUMS:
Spending time in public aquariums can improve physical and mental well-being, according to a new study by a team from UK’s Plymouth University and National Marine Aquarium. As well as improving people’s mood, experiments show significant reductions in participants’ heart-rates and blood pressure. Results show participants feel more relaxed and significantly happier as the number of fish increases … in other words with more biodiversity. And psychological measurements show that the benefits of the tranquil environment increase with exposure, people becoming increasingly happier the longer they stay. (Seems public aquariums are basically ‘blue gyms’.)

TRAITS OF TEXT-WALKERS:
Text-walkers are the bane of busy pedestrians as they saunter along sidewalks at a snail’s pace with their heads bent low over their smartphones,. But new research shows that text-walkers actually evolve a sort of ‘protective shuffle’ in order to prevent mishaps. Academics at the University of Bath and University of Texas have found that texting causes people to slow their pace and make large, exaggerated movements to negotiate crowds and compensate for their diminished vision. This ‘protective gait pattern’ causes them to take about 25% longer to cover a distance, but allows them to swerve past barriers and  avoid obstacles by lifting their legs higher. (Well OK … but they still look dorky.)

PECKING ORDER:
A new scientific finding may have solved why roosters take turns crowing at dawn. Biologists at Japan’s Nagoya University have discovered that they follow a strict social order when they cock-a-doodle-doo. The most dominant male bird in the area is first to break the night-time silence, followed by the second-most-dominant and so on. This strict ranking continues through the social hierarchy among roosters. And if the dominant bird is taken away, the second in command takes over as first to crow. Researchers have also found that cocks crow at the same time every day regardless of whether they can see dawn breaking. It’s believed their behavior is regulated by a circadian rhythm – the body’s internal clock – rather than by external triggers like sunrise. (And unfortunately, there’s no ‘Snooze’ button.)

WHEN A KISS IS NOT A KISS:
A joint research team from University of Nevada-Indiana University has found that fewer than half the world’s cultures kiss in a romantic way. Although many societies consider kissing to be a romantic or erotic activity, others consider it ‘gross’ and ask why anyone would ‘share their dinner’. Researchers have studied 168 cultures over the past year and found evidence of romantic kissing in 77, or 46%. The more socially complex the culture, the higher the frequency of romantic kissing. Across Europe, a peck on the cheek is a common cultural greeting; one on the lips is indeed a romantic gesture. In India, Bangladesh, and Thailand, it’s a private practice. But some societies do not consider kissing romantic at all. The Oceanic kiss, for example, involves passing open mouths over each other … without actual contact. (No spit swapping!)
