BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Ryan Reynolds us urging the Academy to add a “Stunt” Oscar category. In a lengthy social media post, he wrote: “Stunt work doesn’t have a category at the Oscars, and I hope that’ll change someday. The “Deadpool & Wolverine” star pointed out that “Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and Chaplin were stunt performers as well as filmmakers. Telling stories with their entire bodies.” Next, he drew attention to the crew on Deadpool & Wolverine, saying that they “over-delivered”, joking that he’ll “spend the rest of my days doodling their names in my Heidi Stationary, dotting all the ‘i’s’ with little hearts.” He also heaped praise on his co-star Hugh Jackman, who has played ‘Wolverine’ for 24 years and is known for performing many of his own stunts — a feat that Reynolds gushed is “mind boggling.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/y698mm85

★ Melina Alves is clapping back at claims she and Joey Lawrence had an affair. Nearly a week after news broke that the actress’ estranged husband, Edward Rider, alleged in his divorce filing that the “Socked in for Christmas” co-stars were romantically involved, she broke her silence via Instagram, saying in a lengthy statement that “there was no sexual relationship between myself and Joey while we were on set filming.” She called their relationship “a meaningful friendship that developed naturally due to the many similarities in our personal situations”, and praised Lawrence as “kind,” “warm” and “genuine,” and said they had a “strong, supportive friendship.” Rider’s claims made headlines a day after Lawrence’s estranged wife, Samantha Cope, filed for divorce.

★ Nikki Glaser will host the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards. The awards show telecast will take place on Jan. 5, 2025 on CBS and on Paramount+ in the U.S. In a statement, the comedian said she is “absolutely thrilled” to be hosting…and now I get a front row seat (actually, I think I have to host from the stage) …It’s one of the few times that show business not only allows, but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least I hope so). (God I hope so).” Glaser recently made headlines with her viral appearance at the Netflix roast of Tom Brady.

★ Gwyneth Paltrow is back. The Oscar winner and Goop mastermind is joining Timothée Chalamet in Josh Safdie‘s ping pong movie “Marty Supreme.” It’ll be Paltrow’s first on-screen movie role since “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019. No word yet regarding her character. Plot details for “Marty Supreme” are scarce, but studio A24 posted an image of a table tennis ball with the words “coming soon”, after news of the project broke in June.

★ “Starting 5”, the Netflix basketball series following Lebron James, Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, Domantas Sabonis and Jayson Tatum has been confirmed, with an October 9 premiere. Modeled after “Quarterback”, Starting 5 provides a behind-the-scenes look at the 2023-24 NBA season through the eyes of 5 of the league’s biggest players. The streamer says it “captures their battles on and off the court as they chase greatness, push through injuries, and balance the demands of family and legacy.” Peyton Manning and Barack and Michelle Obama are listed among the Executive producers.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• One Direction — Everyone’s talking about the Oasis reunion, but fans who are still holding out hope for One Direction to get back together got some fuel for their fantasies on Tuesday night, when Harry Styles attended Niall Horan‘s concert in Manchester. In a fan vid that’s being shared online, Styles is seen singing and dancing in a VIP box. In another, Harry is seen hugging Niall’s girlfriend. (Whoops?) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mucta6w
• Lizzo – 2 days after telling fans in a video that she is taking a “gap year”, she shared a video comparing a 3-year-old clip of herself with what she looks like now, writing: “I wasn’t gonna post this on IG but 2021 me would be soooo proud of 2024 me.” Then, she teased fans with the words: “wheeeew don’t worry imma write a album about it.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/42vxvs7h
• Oasis – With demand for reunion tour tickets exceptionally high, fans were asked a trivia question to secure access to a pre-sale ballot: “Who was the drummer in the initial Oasis line up?” The correct answer is Tony McCarroll. Successful applicants were sent an email this morning with full access information.
• David Bowie — A new video for his 1972 hit ‘Starman’ has been released to mark the arrival of a new edition of the album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars”. The vid comes from previously unseen film shot by Bowie’s longtime collaborator Mick Rock, in 1972 and ‘73. The footage appears in a Blu-ray version of the album, which features 4 different mixes, out Sept. 6. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/7emr3dt5
• John Lennon – A trailer has been released for the upcoming documentary “Daytime Revolution”, which looks at the week in 1972 when he and Yoko Ono produced and co-hosted “The Mike Douglas Show”. It includes clips of their guests, including Chuck Berry and George Carlin, plus a clip of Lennon performing ‘Imagine.’ The doc will premiere at the Hamptons Film Festival in October. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/y52ksbp5
• Luke Bryan – made a very special wardrobe choice for his appearance at the all-star “Toby Keith: American Icon tribute show”. Bryan typically performs wearing a baseball cap, but for the tribute, which aired on Wed., he brought out his black cowboy hat in honor of Keith. He sang ‘Should’ve Been a Cowboy’, so that works.
• Russell Dickerson — hopped onto X to post a preview of his upcoming song ‘Those Nights These Days’. In a video, he said: “It’s about missing the homies…Those nights, these days… the great mems, that’ll last forever.” “Those Nights These Days” appears on his new “Bones” EP, out today. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yjmumub9
• Jelly Roll – While seeing the sites in Salt Lake City prior to opening his “Beautifully Broken Tour” on Tues., he came across a couple of kids who had set up a lemonade stand. And Jelly Roll being Jelly Roll, he pulled over to enjoy a cold drink – and to make their day. One kid’s mom posted: “Who would have thought that we would run into Jelly Roll in West Valley? And for him to be so generous with giving them almost $700.”

PIZZA PIE, SQUARED:
It seems that every month or 2, the major restaurants come up with a new, novelty menu item. But this innovation is about the packaging, not the food. Pizza Hut is offering a special pizza box that can be turned into a mini table. That’s right: the table box folds out into a base that can support a pizza box – perfect for when you’re moving, and it’s time to feed the helpers – and maybe the furniture isn’t set up yet. The pizza chain has made its new table box available with an order of a large pizza in Dallas, Charlotte, and Orlando, which are among the top moving destinations in the US. In a statement, Pizza Hut said: “Many can relate to the chaos that comes with moving, and the last thing you want to worry about is unpacking to enjoy a hard-earned meal at the end of a long day.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4p4c366e
(…although if it’s “the end of a long day”, you’d think you’d have found the kitchen table by then!)
(It’s only available for carry-out, because they know if you have it delivered, your mother will put the guy to work!)

BAGGAGE CLAIM:
A fashion influencer says she has the ultimate money-saving travel hack. In Faith Woodhalls’s trending how-to TikTok video, she explains that if you want to avoid shelling out, say, an extra $40 to check an overstuffed suitcase at the airport, here’s what you should do: “Bring a second plastic bag full of stuff and buy a duty-free bag at the airport, so they think you’ve just bought stuff at the airport.” In the clip, the “FaithinFashion” host shows herself and a friend hiding their belongings in bags from a duty-free shop, as a way of avoiding luggage fees. Woodhall tells her 310,000 followers that the hack “works (like) a dream”, and she has never been charged for a second bag. One viewer commented: “This is genius”, while another wrote: “Been doing this for years. Works every time! Never had a problem.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/ykbxwcfk
(The problem comes when you set your “duty free” bag down, and your dirty laundry spills out!)
(OF course, once they see this, airports are going to start charging 40 bucks for an empty duty-free bag!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A man well known for making bubbles for children had his bubble burst by park rangers. Sandy Snakenberg, “The Bubble Pirate”, says he’s been blowing bubbles in public parks for years. The homeless disabled veteran lives out of his van, where he creates his bubble solution. But it would seem it’s a no-no to leave behind liquid bubble juice at La Jolla Cove in San Diego. That’s where park rangers approached him, telling him there had been complaints, and that the bubble solution left behind constitutes littering. A city spokesperson said Snakenberg uses up to 6 gallons of solution each time he blows bubbles, and he was issued the “lowest level citation available.” Snakenberg has no plans to stop blowing bubbles. After all, he said: “I’m a bubbleologist.” (It’s a thing. I checked.)
➢ A city in France is baring all with a museum exhibit on nudity — which guests can view in the buff themselves. A spokesperson for The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations Marseille says
it was “only natural” to allow guests to see the nudity exhibit without their clothes on. Its recent unveiling saw 80-some visitors put themselves on full display in the curtain-covered room. France is seen as the leading destination for naturists, and now, the country’s centuries culture of nudity – or naturism, is on display via the exhibit’s 600 photos, videos and “everyday objects.” One caveat: While guests are welcome to doff their duds when visiting the display, shoes are required – to “avoid getting splinters”. (If I was naked and concerned about splinters, getting them on my feet would be the least of my worries!)

DID YOU KNOW?
We’ve all tried hangover cures, but this one has science behind it. On sale for just a few months in the US, the Safety Shot supposedly sobers up the user in an hour. Forbes reports that it reduces the amount of alcohol running through the blood after drinking, and it works so well, it can even be used to help those who are suffering from alcohol poisoning. Safety Shot claims its drink helps with rehydration and recovery, to get anyone who has had “a few too many” out of an intoxicated state. The drink is said to create a protective shield around the stomach wall, thereby preventing additional residual alcohol from being absorbed. Introduced in Las Vegas (where else?) late last year, availability is expanding across the country, and it is also available online. BS CHRONOMETER 08.30.24
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Forgive Your Foe Friday”. It’s not always easy, but in the end, you’ll be much more at peace. Because remember: Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.
• “Slinky Day”. The Slinky was designed in the 1940s. The inventor had accidentally knocked a spring off the shelf, and watched it ‘walk’ down a series of books, to a tabletop, and then to the floor, where it neatly coiled itself. (After all that, there really wasn’t much left to invent, was there?)
• “Holistic Pet Day”, initiated by the Animal Miracle Foundation, to encourage pet owners to develop a healthy lifestyle for their pets through diet, exercise, and environment.
• “International Day of the Disappeared”, to draw attention to the fate of those imprisoned under poor conditions and at places unknown to their relatives and/or legal representatives.
• “Frankenstein Day”, honoring Mary Shelley, the author of “Frankenstein: or, the Modern Prometheus”. She was born on this day in 1797. The novel was first published anonymously in 1818. (By the way, in the book, ‘Frankenstein’ is the guy who created the monster, not the actual monster…)
• “Beach Day”, celebrating everything BEACH…parties, family, friends, great food, photography, beach must-haves and most importantly, encouraging clean-up of beaches today.
• “World Testicle Cooking Championship” (aka “Ballscup”) begins, the annual event in Rudnik, Serbia. Serving up a variety of testicles, including from wildlife. (That’s nuts!) LINK: https://ballscup.com/wtcc/
• “Toasted Marshmallow Day”, celebrating that great Summer treat on a stick. So, how do you like yours done? LINK: https://tinyurl.com/w8f35un4
WHAT YOUR TOASTED MARSHMALLOW SAYS ABOUT YOU:
➠ Perfectly Browned On All Sides – You are an anal-retentive perfectionist, a nit-picker who will devote unreasonable amounts of time to ensure that every project is done ‘just so’.
➠ Blackened – You are a creative and high-strung latent pyromaniac who is seldom punctual, easily distracted, and has difficulty paying attention to detail.
➠ Crusty Outside, Gooey Inside – You are an overly-sensitive individual who detests any form of criticism and has trouble expressing innermost feelings. Rather than facing problems head-on, you waste time brooding about them.
➠ Slightly Tanned on One Side – You are a shy introvert who tends to underestimate the effort and time required to accomplish a task. You have an unreasonable fear of everyday things … fire, for instance.
➠ Raw – You are a lusty and likely overweight thrill-seeker who refuses to even consider the concept of delayed gratification. Rather than plan ahead, you want immediate satisfaction.
SATURDAY:
• “Eat Outside Day”, a great excuse to eat outside one more time before Summer comes to an end and we all get busy with Fall activities. (Did anyone book the ants?)
• “Bacon Day”, in the US. Bacon refers to meat from the belly of a pig, known as the pork belly. Bacon from the loin is called Canadian bacon.
• “Love Litigating Lawyers Day”. Well, they DO love litigating… (You know the problem with making lawyer jokes? Lawyers don’t think they’re funny — and no one else thinks they’re jokes.)
• “Trail Mix Day”, celebrating the combination of nuts, seeds, dried fruits (bark, twigs, compost, etc.) . . . that takes about a gallon of water to wash down.
• “Matchmaker Day”, honoring those romantics (aka busybodies) whose dauntless pursuit of perfect matches for cupid’s arrow results in long-lasting love stories. Playing matchmaker requires a bit of social savvy, the ability to listen, and timing.
• “We Love Memoirs Day”. How is a memoir different from an autobiography? Traditionally, an autobiography may cover a person’s whole life, but a memoir has a narrower focus, covering a significant period in a person’s life. Some historically important memoirs include Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden”, and Anne Frank’s “The Diary of a Young Girl”. (Also, Tommy Lee’s book…)
• “Pony Express Day”, celebrating those brave souls who made up the unique mail delivery system of the same name. Back in the days of the American wild west, there was no Fed Ex, no Postal Service that ran that far west, no planes, and deliveries by ship were likely to take months — if they ever got there at all.
SUNDAY:
• “September” begins. In Latin ‘septem’ means ‘seventh’. That’s because back in the day when the New Year started in March, September was the 7th month.
• “First Day of Spring” in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, so designated by tradition, not any relation to the Vernal Equinox.
• “No Rhyme Nor Reason Day”, a celebration of words that don’t rhyme with any other words (aka refractory rhymes), like: angel, month, orange, purple, silver. (Although we do take exception to including ‘purple’. Have these people never heard of a “purple nurple”?)
• “Pet Rock Day”, celebrating the collectible craze created by ad exec Gary Dahl, who had the idea to take smooth stones from Rosarito Beach in Mexico and market them like live pets. The fad lasted for around 6 months in 1975. More than 1 million Pet Rocks, costing $4 each, made Dahl a millionaire.
• “Letter Writing Day”, paying tribute to this age-old form of communication. Today is a great chance to reconnect with people you haven’t been in touch with for a long time. It also helps you to think before you write. With modern communication, we don’t tend to reflect much before firing off a text or email. (Great. Now where do I get one of those “stamp” thingies?) LINK: https://www.worldletterwritingday.com/
• “American Chess Day”, celebrating the Sept. 1, 1972 victory of chess Grandmaster Bobby Fischer over Russian champ Boris Spassky, making him the first American to win the world title. Chess is often called “The Game of Kings”. (If you forget the rules of Chess, don’t worry — you’re allowed to “check”!)
• “Pink Cadillac Day”. They have an iconic place in American culture, most notably because of Elvis Presley. He mentioned a pink Cadillac in his first charting single, ‘Baby Let’s Play House’ (1955), and bought his first pink Cadillac around the same time.
• “Ginger Cat Appreciation Day”. Ginger cats are more likely to be male than female because the “ginger gene”, which produces the orange color, is on the X chromosome. There are roughly 3 males to 1 female ginger cat. (And yes, they DO have souls!)
MONDAY:
• “V-J Day” (or ‘Victory Over Japan Day’), the anniversary of the 1945 formal surrender of Japan aboard USS Missouri, marking the end of World War II.
• “Labour Day” in Canada (“Labor Day” in the US), celebrated on the first Monday of September. It originally was to celebrate workers’ achievements in the workplace, specifically the 8-hour day movement, and to campaign for better working conditions or pay. It is considered the unofficial end of summer, with vacations ending, and students returning to school around Labour Day.
• “Blueberry Popsicle Day”, a celebration of the flavor that leaves your lips and tongue looking like some kind of purple-fleshed alien.
• “Calendar Adjustment Day”, marking the day in 1752 that led to the current calendar system, and New Year’s Day being celebrated at the start of January. Due to the fact that Britain was adopting the Gregorian calendar, the people of Britain and the colonies went to sleep on Sept. 2, and woke up the next morning to Sept. 14!

➠ Mike Tyson says he smokes “about $40,000 of Marijuana every month.” (So, there IS something that’s higher than his voice!)
➠ Monday is Labor Day. (Isn’t Labor Day a strange holiday? I mean, we celebrate work by NOT working. It’s like celebrating a Kardashian Birthday by putting on pants!)

➠ Fact of the Day: Johnny Depp and Queen Elizabeth were 20th cousins. (And they could not be more different: One is an aging feminine aging figure with a stoic accent and taste for wine. The other was Queen Elizabeth…)
