BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Jennifer Lopez liked marrying Ben Affleck so much, she did it twice. She looked stunning as she walked the aisle in a white couture Ralph Lauren gown on Satuday. Affleck donned a white tuxedo suit and formal black pants. Ben and Jen staged a lavish ceremony at Affleck’s Georgia home for extended friends and family one month after their low-key Las Vegas wedding. Guests included his long-time pal Matt Damon, director Kevin Smith, and actor Jason Mewes and their wives, but Ben’s brother Casey was notably absent due to “parental obligations.” A source reported that guests wore white to match the floral arrangements and exotic decor. For extra drama, the bride sported a whopping 20-foot veil, which all 5 of their children helped carry on a walkway leading into the “plantation-style” house following the ceremony, which ended with a kiss.

★ The MTV VMAs are always full of surprises – and this year’s show will be no exception. Johnny Depp has been in talks with the production team to dress up as the ‘Moonman’, the network’s famous mascot as seen on the actual VMA hardware, which has more recently been dubbed the ‘Moonperson’. While the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star isn’t up for a Moonman himself this year, he’s won 5 in the past, including the coveted Generation Award in 2012. The 2022 MTV VMAs are scheduled for this Sunday.

★ Will Smith appears to have social media — and adorable animals — on his mind. In his first social media post since the Oscars ceremony on March 27 that does NOT directly reference the infamous moment when he slapped Chris Rock onstage, Smith took to Instagram on Friday to post a short video of a young gorilla earning the ire of a much larger gorilla by poking it multiple times in the backside. His caption: “Me trying to get back on social.” Among those commenting was TV’s former ‘Dog Whisperer’ Cesar Millan, who wrote, “Animal kingdom is with you Will.” Smith’s ex-wife, Sheree Zampino, responded with a heart emoji.

★ Thirty-six years after its release, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is getting a spinoff. The new film, titled “Sam and Victor’s Day Off” will follow the valets who took Cameron’s dad’s Ferrari on a joyride the same day ‘Ferris’, ‘Cameron’ and ‘Sloane’ skipped school in the original movie. ‘Sam’ and ‘Victor’, who were left unnamed in the original movie, were played by Richard Edson and Larry “Flash” Jenkins, who died in 2019. The new film is being led by Jon Hurwtiz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, who created “Cobra Kai”, the successful spinoff series of 1984’s “Karate Kid”.

SHOOTING THE BULL
GRATING GREETING:
A group of Harvard researchers say that asking someone “How are you” is a terrible way to make small talk. Why? The person asking doesn’t really want to know, and the person responding doesn’t tell the truth. They say this is a lost opportunity and a meaningless exchange with zero connection. According to them, the key to making the most out of small talk is to simply ask the other person follow-up questions. The researchers analyzed more than 300 online conversations and found that those who were asked more meaningful follow-up questions (questions other than “how are you?” or “what do you do?”, etc.), found the other person much more likable. They concluded: “When people are instructed to ask more questions, they are perceived as higher in responsiveness, an interpersonal construct that captures listening, understanding, validation and care.” Alternatives include asking a question about the surroundings, or sharing some recent news or experiences.
(But a meaningless exchange with zero connection is exactly what I’m after!)

NEW DEVELOPMENTS:
⇒ Elon Musk has unveiled more details about his company’s futuristic artificial intelligence robots, which he says will be able to perform our “boring” chores by the end of the year. Standing at around 5’ 8” (173cm), Musk’s ‘Tesla Bot’ could eliminate menial tasks and become a commonplace item in most households, taking care of everything from cooking, cleaning, mowing grass and general maintenance. But keep in mind that Musk is well known to make outlandish estimations on the actual release date of his technology. He said the bot will be able to carry 45 pounds (20kg), lift 150 pounds (68kg), and will be able to run 5 mph (8kph). Musk said the machine is designed so that humans can easily run away from and overpower it. (Obviously, Musk has never seen me run!)
⇒ A Tokyo clothing maker has teamed up with veterinarians to create a wearable fan for pets, hoping to attract the anxious owners of dogs – or cats – that can’t shed their fur coats in Japan’s blistering summer weather. The device consists of a battery-operated, 80-gram (3-ounce) fan that is attached to a mesh outfit and blows air around an animal’s body. It comes in 5 sizes and is priced at US $74. (And if you turn it up too high, you’ll have a pet ceiling fan!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ Researchers in Switzerland say they’ve developed a carbon neutral aviation fuel. The futuristic fuel uses water, carbon dioxide and sunlight to power jet engines. The Swiss scientists are the first to produce the fuel in a power generator rather than a lab. The amount of synthetic jet fuel it emits when it combusts in a plane’s engine equals the amount consumed during its production in a solar plant, thus making it carbon neutral. Airplanes are responsible for around 5% of global emissions and their engines run on kerosene or jet fuel, derived from crude oil. This new solar-made kerosene is fully compatible with the existing way fuel is stored, distributed, and used in a plane’s engine.
(Perfect. But NOW what are we gonna be mad at Taylor Swift for?)
➢ Yes, cats are said to have 9 lives, but it’s rare that they SAVE lives. When Brit Sam Felstead suffered a heart attack while sleeping, her 7-year-old cat, Billy, noticed and began jumping on the 42-year-old’s chest and meowing as loud as he could. Felstead says the cat “doesn’t normally sit with her, but he knew something was wrong”. With Billy’s efforts, Felstead woke up, realized she could not move on her right side and asked her mother to get her to hospital. Felstead underwent an angioplasty and is now back to work as a receptionist. (I’ve never heard of a cat doing CPR. The “hind-lick”? Heck yes!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Japan wants young people to drink more alcohol. Yes, you heard that correctly. The Japanese government has launched a contest to find new ways to encourage young people to drink more because the country’s alcohol sales and liquor tax revenues have plummeted since the beginning of COVID-19 restrictions. The “Sake Viva!” campaign invites people to submit ideas on how to “stimulate demand among young people” for alcohol through new services, promotional methods, products, designs and even sales techniques using artificial intelligence or the metaverse. The winner will receive support for their plan to be commercialized, (Certainly not the first group of politicians with a ‘drinking problem’…)

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Eat a Peach Day”, the best way to eat a peach is while standing under a peach tree, immediately after picking it, with the juice running down your arm.
• “Southern Hemisphere Hoodie-Hoo Day”, a time for everyone Down Under to go outdoors at noon and yell ‘Hoodie-Hoo!’ to chase away Winter and make ready for Spring.
• “Tooth Fairy Day”, honoring the tradition of bartering molars for moolah. Where’s it come from? No one knows for sure, but there was a fairy tale in 18th-Century France about a ‘tooth mouse’ who hides under a pillow. The tooth fairy as we now know her didn’t make an appearance until the early 1900s, as a generalized ‘good fairy’ with a professional specialization. So how much is she paying for prime enamel these days?
• “Bao Day”, at first, one might consider it to be just a simple steamed bun. Dumplings aside, this is the flavorful Chinese dough used to make bāozi, or bao, and is stuffed with savory meats or sweets.
• “Be An Angel Day”, encouraging us to become someone’s angel of sorts. Whether it is a grand gesture (sponsoring someone’s education) or small (saying ‘thank you’ when someone helps you), a good gesture goes a long way towards sending goodwill out into the world.
• “Pecan Torte Day”, Do you know these ‘Pecan Fast Facts’? No peekin’. . .
→ Pecans provide nearly 10% of the recommended Daily Value for zinc. If the body doesn’t get enough zinc, it may have difficulty producing testosterone – a key hormone for sexual desire in both men and women.
→ Pecan trees usually range in height from 70-100 feet, but some grow 150 feet (46m) or higher.
→ It would take 11,624 pecans, stacked end to end, to reach the top of the Empire State Building.
→ Texas adopted the pecan tree as its state tree in 1919. In fact, Governor James Hogg liked pecan trees so much that he asked for one to be planted at his gravesite when he died.
→ Albany, Georgia, which boasts more than 600,000 pecan trees, is the pecan capital of the U.S. Albany hosts the annual National Pecan Festival, which includes a race, parade, pecan-cooking contest, and the crowning of the National Pecan Queen.
