BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Keanu Reeves’ latest excellent adventure comes in an unexpected field: hockey. The “Matrix” star dusted off his skates and signed a one-day contract with the Windsor Spitfires, a junior hockey team in the Ontario Hockey League. Reeves received a jersey and autographed a number of Spitfire-branded items that will be auctioned off, with proceeds going to the Canadian Mental Health Association. Reeves, who was born in Lebanon to an English mother and a Hawaiian father, grew up in Toronto. He played hockey as a teen, and considered playing goal for the SpitfireS before pursuing acting following an injury. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/58zkwams

★ The new players at the late-summer box office struggled to find their footing. Holdovers “Deadpool & Wolverine”, “Alien: Romulus” and “It Ends With Us” easily beat new offerings “Blink Twice” and “The Crow” reboot. Blink Twice opened in 4th place with about $7.3 million. The Crow — opening 30 years after the original hit the big screen — couldn’t crack the top 5, earning a $4.6 million to come in 7th over the weekend. Deadpool & Wolverine reclaimed the top spot in its 5th weekend with a haul of $18 million.

★ Justin and Hailey Bieber are officially parents! The musician confirmed the news on Friday, posting a pic of the tiny one’s foot to Instagram and writing: “WELCOME HOME JACK BLUES BIEBER.” His model-entrepreneur wife posted the same photo, and a teddy bear and blue heart emoji. The couple announced they were expecting a child together in May. They were married in Sept. 2018. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mv5tp3nk
★ Denzel Washington has hinted at retirement following the release of “Gladiator II” this fall. Speaking with Empire magazine, the 69-year-old said: “There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley (Scott).” His comments have led both media and social media users to speculate about when Washington may choose to leave acting behind. Gladiator hits theaters on Nov. 22.

★ Meghan Markle’s former bachelorette pad in Toronto is officially for sale. The 3-bedroom home in the city where she filmed the TV show “Suits”, is on the market for $1.9 million. The house, in the Seaton Village neighborhood, is where the Duchess of Sussex lived when she first began dating Prince Harry in 2016, and as he pointed out in his 2023 memoir “Spare”, he would stay there when he visited Meghan in Toronto from his native UK, about twice a month. She rented it for at least 2 years.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Tate McRae – had 2 big surprises for fans at her concert in New York City Thursday: duetting with her boyfriend The Kid Laroi on his hit ‘Without You’ – and premiering a new song. In the tune, a clip of which she posted to TikTok, she sings: “It’s okay, I’m okay, I don’t really gotta say, it’s okay. You can have him anyway.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/8fj25bn3
• Sabrina Carpenter – Her much-anticipated album “Short n’ Sweet” arrived on Friday. On Instagram, she posted: “the making of short n’ sweet was one of the most special, honest, up and down, stupid and fun experiences of my life.” She also dropped a video for the song ‘Taste’, in which she smooches Jenna Ortega. • Motley Crue — has released a cover of Beastie Boys’ ‘Fight for Your Right’, from their upcoming “Cancelled EP”. It follows the earlier release of ‘Dogs of War’, the band’s first release featuring new guitarist John 5. The EP arrives Oct. 4. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/bdhp48ya
• AC/DC – Their 1980 album “Back in Black” has been certified for sales of 27 million in the US alone by the Recording Industry of America. It was just certified for sales of 26 million in July, suggesting that the new vinyl re-issue is selling well. Back in Black is now the 3rd-best selling album in US history, behind only the Eagles’ “Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975” (38m) and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” (34m).
• Van Halen – When Alex Van Halen’s memoir “Brothers” is released on Oct. 22, the audiobook will include a special treat for fans: the last bit of music written by Alex and his brother, Eddie Van Halen. Titled “Unfinished,” it has not previously been heard in any capacity.
• Shaboozey – ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ rules Billboard’s Country Airplay chart for a 5th week. That marks just the 6th country career-establishing #1 song to reign for 5 or more weeks. The previous 5: Carrie Underwood – ‘Jesus, Take the Wheel’; Gretchen Wilson – ‘Redneck Woman’; Uncle Kracker w/Kenny Chesney – ‘When the Sun Goes Down’; Blake Shelton – ‘Austin’; Billy Ray Cyrus – ‘Achy Breaky Heart’.
• Jelly Roll – His next album “Beautifull Broken” will arrive Oct. 11, and it turns out he’s being teasing us for months by using the art and album’s name in promotional material for his live show. The LP features the same name as his tour (which begins tomorrow in Salt Lake City), which he announced in Feb. The already-released songs ‘I Am Not Okay’, ‘Liar’ and ‘Get By’ will all appear on the record.
• Marty Stuart – presented his vast collection of country music artifacts to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on Aug. 20 in a ceremony that included performances with instruments from the 22,000-piece assemblage. The memorabilia will be displayed in the Hall of Fame, as well as at Stuart’s Congress of Country Music, a facility under construction in Philadelphia, Mississippi.
SHOOTING THE BULL
PUMPKIN SPICE FATTE:
Although it made its annual appearance in some other countries weeks ago, Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte made its grand return to North American stores on Thursday. And while for many, this is a reason for celebration, dieticians are warning that if you’re planning to enjoy the PSL all season long, you might want to ease up just a bit. Why? A 16-oz Pumpkin Spice Latte (a Grande) contains 50 grams of sugar, 390 calories and 14 grams of fat, 9 grams of which are saturated. The American Heart Association says that women should have no more than 25 grams of added sugar per day, while men should top out at 36. The AHA also recommends that fat should make up 25-35% of your daily calories, which is 56-78g for a 2,000-calorie diet. Saturated fat should be limited to less than 7% of your daily calories, or around 13g per day. So, as you can see, one PSL makes up a large amount of your allotted “sinful” consumption each day, and one nutritionist says that a PSL should be looked at as a dessert, rather than a drink. The good news? The cloves and cinnamon in a PSL are excellent sources of antioxidants, ginger and nutmeg also have health benefits — and a 2021 study found that the spices in a PSL are associated with feelings of nostalgia, which could be good for your mental health.
(But gaining 11 pounds before the holiday season even starts? NOT good for your mental health!)
(It’s OK. I get mine with skim milk!)

HEARWORM:
Who hasn’t had an annoying song stuck in their head, stuck on repeat like a broken record? This common phenomenon, known as an “earworm,” may actually be more than just an annoying side-effect of hearing a really-catchy song: A new study says earworms might help us develop a form of perfect pitch. University of California – Santa Cruz researchers tracked 30 volunteers for a week, prompting them at random times to record any music playing in their heads. They found that nearly half of the recorded earworms were in the exact same key as the original songs, and over two-thirds were very close to the original key, even though none of the volunteers believed they had perfect pitch. The scientists concluded: “A surprisingly large portion of the population has a type of automatic, hidden ‘perfect pitch’ ability”, which could lead to becoming a skilled singer.
(Perfect pitch? It hasn’t worked for me yet, but considering I’ve had ‘Watermelon Sugar’ in my head for 6 days now, it’s certainly not for lack of trying!)
(Well! I’m glad that something good finally came from ‘Achy-Breaky Heart’!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ Experts say the possibility of hydrogen-powered flight means greater opportunities for fossil-free travel, and the technological advances to make this happen are moving fast. New studies from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden show that almost all air travel within a 750-mile radius (1200 km) could be made with hydrogen-powered aircraft by 2045, and with a new heat exchanger currently in development, that range could be even further. Professor Tomas Grönstedt said “the commercialization of hydrogen flight can go really fast now. As early as 2028, the first commercial hydrogen flights in Sweden could be in the air”, and 30-40% of global aviation will be powered by hydrogen by 2050. (Good news, but then how are we going to shame celebs who have private planes?)
➢ The Nevada Burger King cook who received a cheap gift bag from management for his nearly 27 years of fast-food service without ever missing a day — is starting a new venture in the culinary industry. Kevin Ford plans to open a food truck with his daughter, after receiving more than $400,000 from a fundraising campaign. Ford went viral in 2022 when his Burger King supervisors in Las Vegas celebrated his 27th anniversary with the fast-food joint by gifting him a random assortment of gifts, including a movie ticket, a Starbucks cup and a mix of candy and chocolate. His daughter, Seryna, wasn’t pleased, so she created a GoFundMe for the man who helped put his 4 daughters through high school and college through his dedication to the chain. The fundraiser has made $459,800, well over the initial $200 goal. Ford’s new food truck is adorned with a giant “K27Y,” a tribute to his viral fame “Kevin 27 years.”

HOLLYWOOD FICTION:
Recently, the “Kind Humor” Facebook page asked readers to make their own contributions, after posting: “Hello. I am a person in a film or TV drama, and when I arrange to meet someone later, I have no need to specify a time or place.” Here are some awesome responses…
☞ “Hello, I drive to see someone and there is always a parking space right in front of the building.”
☞ “Hello. I am a woman giving birth in a film. It rakes 7 minutes. I pace about a bit, lie back on a bed, get very abruptly sweaty, yell, and there is a baby. The baby is clean and larger than you would expect.”
☞ “Hello. I am a person driving a car in a film. I rarely look at the road because it’s more important that I face the person in the passenger seat, and weirdly nobody else thinks that is really (freaking) dangerous.”
☞ “Hello. I’m a hacker in a Hollywood blockbuster. I don’t use any particular hacking software or know anything about how it’s actually done. All I need to do is type some random code on my keyboard and I’m in the mainframe.”
☞ “Hi, I’m a teacher in a film and the bell always rings just as I’m summing up the lesson so I just shout that I want your test papers on my desk by Thursday morning.”
☞ “Hello. I am a person having a shower or bath in a film. I never wash my body because I am too busy conveying my emotional state.”
☞ “Hello. I am a person in a movie who goes into a bar and orders a ‘beer’ and the bartender immediately serves me one without ever asking what type of beer or brand.”
☞ “Hello. I’m a beautiful heroine staying one step ahead of the zombies. It’s been weeks, and my hair and makeup are all perfect, even if my clothes are torn, showing just enough skin.”
☞ “Hello. I’m a bad guy in a film., and when I put a USB stick in anything I get it the right way round first time, every time.
(Also, no one ever says “Goodbye” at the end of a phone call!)

DID YOU KNOW?
The Air Guitar World Championships has crowned this year’s winner, following 3 days of competition. The 27th annual Olympics of air guitar in Sweden featured competitors bearing names like such as “Shred Lasso” and “Guitarantula”. But it all culminated on Friday night when Canada’s Zachary “Ichabod Fame” Knowles was named 2024 Air Guitar World Champion. Contestants were judged on their performances of 2 songs in 2 separate rounds, each lasting 60 seconds. Props and costumes are allowed — but backup bands and real instruments are forbidden. The jury took into account a contestant’s “originality, ability to be taken over by the music, stage presence, technical merit, artistic impression and ‘airness’. (Don’t laugh – half the bands you paid to see live this summer did the exact same thing!)
