BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Céline Dion has been diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder. In a video message to fans, the 54-year-old shared that she has stiff-person syndrome, a “very rare” condition that can cause muscle spasms. Quote: “I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through.” She went on to note that the spasms affect “every aspect” of her daily life, “sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal chords to sing the way I’m used to.” As a result, she said she is unable to restart her tour in Feb., as planned. She said she’s working with a “great team” of doctors to help her get better. Dion’s health diagnosis comes months after she previously postponed her European tour dates, due to health struggles. ★ Prince Harry and Meghan Markle first met — on social media. In their Netflix docuseries, “Harry & Meghan,” which was released yesterday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex explain how their relationship came about in the summer of 2016. Harry recalled: “I was scrolling through my feed, and one of my friends and someone who was a friend (of hers) had this video of the 2 of them, like a Snapchat…“I was like, ‘Who is THAT?’” Markle said her friend later told her that Harry was interested in meeting her. She investigated Harry’s Instagram, which, she said is the “best barometer”, and found “it was just like beautiful photography and all these environmental shots and this time he was spending in Africa.” Pleased with his feed, the pair exchanged phone numbers the next day — kicking off a royal love story.

★ The search was on this year, for Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Will Smith, Chris Rock and Jada Pinkett Smith: They topped Google’s just-released list of the Top 10 actors who generated the most Google searches in 2022. Not only did the 5 celebs top Google’s year-end list of the most-searched actors, they also accounted for 4 of the top 5 spots on the overall “People” list, with the only non-actor in there being Vladimir Putin at #4. The most-searched movie? “Thor: Love and Thunder”, beating out runners-up “Black Adam” and “Top Gun: Maverick”. Among TV shows, searchers were most curious about “Euphoria”, with “House of the Dragon” at #2.

★ David Letterman sat down with Volodymyr Zelensky for his Netflix show — and the interview comes on the heels of a big honor for the Ukrainian President. The ex-“Late Show” host traveled to the European country in October to meet face-to-face with Zelensky, where they had a chat in front of a live audience, in a secure underground area — as seen in the just-released trailer for the new episode of “My Next Guest.” The clip shows Letterman making the voyage to Ukraine, and he notes that Russian attacks are still underway as the war rages on. Zelensky shakes hands with Letterman, and they eventually have a seat, before the trailer cuts off. This week, Zelensky was named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year. The episode hits Netflix on Monday. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/29bswe4m

• Justin Bieber – visited the World Cup festivities in Qatar to introduce his new water technology company, Generosity (with business partner Micah Cravalho). The concert saw him play a medley of covers at the 250-capacity Largo venue, alongside celeb friends like Pink, Beck, and Tenacious D. Profits from the evening, hosted by Judd Apatow, will go to the Anti-Defamation League.
• Aerosmith — canceled the final two dates of their Las Vegas “Aerosmith: Duces Are Wild” residency due to the undisclosed illness affecting Steven Tyler. On Instagram, the band announced: “On the advice of doctors, Steven has to sit these out.” Shows affected were scheduled for last night and this Sunday. John earned over $334 million with 85 “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” dates, second only to Bad Bunny on Billboard’s 2022 Top Tours chart. NO NOISE IS GOOD NOISE:
They say that good fences make good neighbors – but that doesn’t help if they’re too loud. And that’s a shame. Because according to a new study, noisy neighbors don’t just affect your quality of life…their racket is more annoying than any other nuisance, and it might even give you heart disease! Markus Mueller-Trapet of the National Research Council of Canada conducted sound experiments and discovered that “impact” sounds made by noisy neighbors, such as stomping feet and dropping objects on the floor, are more annoying than more general and continuous sounds such as a TV or loud speech. The company notes that long-term exposure to these unwanted sounds could potentially trigger cardiovascular problems and sleep disturbances. And with the increased population density of urban areas over the last few decades and the rise of working from home, the researchers believe this topic is more relevant than ever before.
(Exactly! And THAT’S why I blast music in my apartment all day long…and all night!)
(Actually, there’s one thing worse than having noisy neighbors – having noisy neighbors who you can’t understand what they’re arguing about!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A New York man who bought 300 iPhones from the Apple flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York was robbed just moments after walking out of the store. He left the Apple store in Manhattan at 1:45am, carrying his purchases in a few branded “Apple” bags like it was no big deal. What could go wrong? While making his way to a vehicle, he was held up, losing 125 smartphones worth about $95,000. Police say the unnamed 27-year-old was a regular at the store, and regularly bought high volumes of iPhones, which he resold through his small business. Because of his buying habits, police say there is a possibility that the robbers had been monitoring him. No arrests have been made. (If only he had a phone, he could have ordered them online…)
➢ A 72-year-old woman was arrested after she allegedly switched off a hospital roommate’s ventilator – twice – because she was annoyed by the sound it made. The woman was jailed on suspicion of attempted manslaughter following the incident at a hospital in the city of Mannheim. She is alleged to have switched off a 79-year-old woman’s ventilator and, despite then being told by staff that it was vital for the patient, switched it off again later in the evening. The older patient had to be revived and, while her life is not in danger, she still requires intensive care. The suspect was taken to jail. (And God help her cellmates, if they snore!)

DID YOU KNOW?
A tech company has developed a state-of-the-art AI chatbot so sophisticated that it could render Google (and other search engines) — not to mention countless jobs — obsolete. Unveiled last week by the OpenAI company, “ChatGPT” has already more than 1 million users worldwide with its advanced functions, which range from instantaneously composing complex essays and computer code, to drafting marketing pitches and interior decorating schemes. It can even whip up poems and jokes — an ability previously thought to be exclusive to humans. ChatGPT’s capabilities have sparked fears that Google’s days may be numbered, something that Gmail developer Paul Buchheit seems to concede. This month, he tweeted: “Google may be only a year or two away from total disruption. AI will eliminate the search engine result page, which is where they make most of their money.”

BS CHRONOMETER 12.09.22
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Christmas Card Day”, commemorating the first commercial Christmas card, commissioned by Sir Henry Cole in London, England in 1843, which featured a cheery illustration depicting a family with glasses raised in a Christmas toast. It was widely denounced at the time as promoting drunkenness.
• “Anna’s Day” in Sweden and Finland, when it’s time to start the preparation process of the lutefisk to be consumed on Christmas Eve, as well as a Swedish day celebrating all people named ‘Anna’.
• “International Anti-Corruption Day”, to raise awareness of corruption and the role of the UN Convention Against Corruption in combating and preventing it. (Sounds like a scam to me…)
• “Pastry Day”, a fun day created to encourage you to make, and of course eat, your favorite pastries. (Initiated by the ‘Danish’?)
• “National Salesperson Day”, honoring those gifted and creative individuals whose big kick in life is persuading others to spend a buck. (We were going to buy lunch for the station sales team, but it seems they’ve already left for the day…)
• “National Llama Day”, to appreciate this fuzzy animal that’s closely related to the alpaca — and can be trained as a therapy animal. Some fun llama facts:
-They can live as long as 30 years.
-They make great guards because they charge at coyotes or dogs — and often make high-pitched screams at intruders.
-There were more than 150-thousand llamas in the US in the year 2000. Now, there are just 35,000.
• “World Techno Day”, techno is a kind of electronic dance music (EDM) that originated in Detroit in the late ‘80s. It is a fusion of dance music and the avant-garde, futuristic sounds from the likes of German electro-pop group Kraftwerk. It is regarded as intellectual and cerebral (but not by your parents!).
SATURDAY-
• “Dewey Decimal Day”, honoring Melville Dewey, born this day in 1851 in Adams Center NY. At 21, he invented the “Dewey Decimal Classification System” while working as a student assistant in the Amherst College library. For creating this revolutionary filing system, he’s known as the ‘Father of Modern Librarianship’. (Wow, let’s not overDUE it…)
• “International Human Rights Day”, honoring the UN Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
• “Nobel Prize Awards Day”. The awards were established by the will of Swedish chemist (and dynamite inventor) Alfred Nobel and have been held on this date since 1901. The current value of each award is about US $1.1 million.
• “National Lager Day”, lager is typically characterized as a light, summer beer. Most is matured or conditioned at a cold temperature, and with a particular yeast, resulting in a “crisp” and “refreshing” taste. The term lager means “storeroom” or “warehouse” in German.
• “International Shareware Day”, Shareware is software that is shared as “try before you buy”. That includes software for hundreds of programs, including Donkey Kong, WinZip, YouTube Downloader, antivirus programs, and Adobe Acrobat. When the trial period for shareware is over, the user either starts paying or has to stop using the program. (That’s not sharing – that’s lending!)
SUNDAY-
• “National App Day”, “App” was named word of the year in 2010 by the American Dialect Society. Apps have changed how we work, live and play. They have created thousands of new companies, millions of new jobs and billions of dollars in revenue (and a lot of bad puns…)
• “International Mountain Day”, first declared by the UN in 2002 to draw attention to the important role that mountainous regions play in our water and food supply. (OK…but why?)
• “National Noodle Ring Day”, a noodle ring is, rather predictably, made from noodles – especially flat, tagliatelle type egg noodles. It’s made using a ring mold, or a Bundt tray, with ingredients including cheese, eggs, and flour, along with the noodles.
• “UNICEF Birthday”, the anniversary of the creation of UNICEF in 1946. What does it stand for? “The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund”
• “National Have a Bagel Day”, here are 5 things to know about the bagel:
– The bagel originated in Poland and it was designed for Lent.
– Its name derives from the Yiddish word ‘bengal’, meaning ‘ring’ or ‘bracelet’. Immigrant Polish-Jews brought the bagel to the United States.
– The hole in the center is for multiple bagels to be threaded onto a dowel, which allows bakers to transport them more easily. (And so melted peanut butter can leak onto your hand…)
– Automated production and distribution of frozen bagels started in the 1960s with bagel bakers Harry Lender, Murray Lender, and Florence Sender.
