LIKE A BIRD ON A WIRE:
The latest attempt to monitor air pollution in San Jose, California will involve the use of – pigeons wearing cellphone backpacks. Each bird in a flock of 20 will carry a cellphone with a GPS tracking chip and air pollution sensors. Data will then be sent back via text messages to a so-called ‘Pigeon Blog’ on air quality. Miniature cameras tied around their necks will post aerial photos of trouble spots. University of California researcher Beatriz da Costa and 2 of her students came up with the idea. (Just what you need, ‘spotter’ pigeons calling up exact co-ordinates of your windshield to the ‘bombers’ above.)
