ABC-TV has picked up another ‘make-over’ show, but in “Miracle Worker” the make-over team will be doctors who look for people urgently in need of medical care but don’t have the wherewithal to get it (how ethical is curing cancer for ratings?) . . . Word has it Drew Barrymore has dumped Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti, sending him a ‘Dear Fabrizio’ letter LAST WEEK (“I’m a rich star, you’re not … g’bye”) . . . . Actor Kiefer Sutherland has agreed to make a PSA promoting understanding of Muslims after his show “24“ was criticized for depicting a Muslim family as a terrorist sleeper cell . . . Model Heidi Klum & her singer-fiancé Seal attended Carnival in her hometown of Bergisch Gladbach, Germany – dressed up as dragons . . . Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry will present an award at this year’s “Academy Awards” while wearing shoes encrusted with more than 400 pear-shaped and round diamonds worth – a cool $1 million! . . . But that’s chump-change to Brit actor Hugh Grant, who is looking to buy a retreat with private swimming pools, tennis courts and its own beach on the secluded Mediterranean island of Sainte-Marguerite for – whoa! – $66.5 million.

BS BUZZWORDS:
New cutting-edge vocab …
• ‘Disco Women’ – Women in their ‘discerning, increasing years’ who are now an increasingly important segment of the fashion industry market. These are stylish and comfortably well-off women who want well-made fashionable clothes.
• ‘Item-Girl’ – A hot-looking female actress, singer or dancer who is poised to become a star in India’s Bollywood film industry. An ‘item song’ is a musical number which has little do with the movie in which it appears, but is presented mainly to promote the singer, the song or the film. (English-language Bollywood film “Bride & Prejudice” debuts FRIDAY.)
• ‘Matron Lit’ – A new literary category aimed at women in the mushrooming Baby Boomer age bracket who are eager to read about women in middle and later years who still manage to find adventure and romance. (Typical title – “The Hot Flash Club” by Nancy Thaye.)

NEW & IMPROVED WATER!
Researchers at the Australian National University have discovered something that cleans better than leading laundry detergents – water! Yep, it seems that mild-mannered tap water becomes a super-cleaner after an inexpensive process called ‘de-gassing’ which takes out all the natural bubbles. In testing, it was found that de-gassed water removes oily and greasy stains much better than even the strongest biological detergents. Researchers say the discovery could lead to a cleaning revolution. (Next they’ll be working on developing the new cutting-edge pain-killer – air.)

INSTANT AGING:
A new University of Utah study finds that a 20-year-old driver talking on a cellphone has the same reaction time as – a 70-year-old! The research also shows that any driver talking on a cellphone is more ‘impaired’ in their driving ability than a drunk driver with a blood-alcohol level exceeding 0.08. And it doesn’t matter whether the phone is hand-held or hands-free. In fact, researchers say, any activity requiring a driver to actively be part of a conversation will likely impair driving ability. (So that about rules out giving your mom a ride anywhere.)
– “Human Factors”

3. Pisces [Feb 19-Mar 20]
4. Virgo [Aug 23-Sept 22]

HOW TO FALL ASLEEP FAST:
Forget counting sheep. Forget chamomile tea. Listening to music at bedtime is the secret to falling asleep fast and getting a restful night’s sleep, according to researchers at Taiwan’s Tzu Chi University. The best kind of music is apparently soft, slow tunes, such as light jazz, folk, or orchestral pieces, that measure 60-to-80 beats a minute. The researchers even have a name for it: ‘Sedative Music’. Believe it or not, the music will actually cause physical changes in your body, such as lowering your heart and respiratory rates, that will lead to a good night’s sleep. (Or, if you just roll over to the edge of the bed … you’ll drop off in no time.)

AND WE QUOTE:
• “His lips were on the same microphone as mine and I was ready to just kiss him. I don’t know what it was but I became a groupie.”
– 23-year-old singer Christina Milian about her unsanitary scene with 56-year-old Aerosmith singer Steve Tyler in the upcoming “Get Shorty” sequel “Be Cool”. The movie opens MARCH 4th.
• “Everybody knows Madonna lip-synchs. Everybody knows a lot of people lip-synch on-stage. It was no big deal … I got a lot of flak for (saying) it. Somebody said, ‘Well, she can’t sing when she’s in the crab position.’ Well, there you go … especially if she had hemorrhoids as well.”
– Elton John, who can’t seem to let his comments about Madonna’s alleged lip-synching die.

BULL’S BITS . . .
BS LAWS OF WORK:
• Don’t be irreplaceable. If you can’t be replaced, you can’t be promoted.
• If you’re good, you’ll be assigned all the work. If you’re REALLY good, you’ll get out of it.
• When you don’t know what to do, walk fast and look worried.
• It doesn’t matter what you do, it only matters what you say you’ve done and what you’re going to do.
• Following the rules will not get the job done. But getting the job done is no excuse for not following the rules.
• The last person that quit or was fired is responsible for everything that goes wrong.

PHONE STARTERS:
• What’s the strangest appliance you own and what does it do?
• At what age does ‘old age’ start? (In a recent poll, most say you’re old when you reach 70.)
• What’s the absolute worst Valentine gift you’ve ever received? (An online poll finds the worst “Valentine’s Day” gift for a woman would be roses with a card … addressed to someone else.)

BS WATER COOLER QUESTION:
Today’s Question: According to a recent study, 15% of women do THIS on Valentine’s Day.
Answer to Give Out Next Show: Send themselves flowers.

BS DEEP THOUGHT:
If you’ve got part of it, flaunt that part!
