Friday, February 18, 2000                                             Edition:  #1746

Sunday NASCAR season kicks off with the 42nd annual “Daytona 500″ in Daytona Beach FL. So here’s a look at . . .
BS REASONS AUTO RACING IS BETTER THAN SEX:
• When you finish first, champagne gets dumped on your head.
• Engineers are always looking for ways to improve your performance.
• Caution flag comes out when wet spots or debris lie ahead.
• You can adjust your spoiler for more down pressure.
• You know you’re done when you see the checkered flag.

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson of the Backstreet Boys have both confirmed they’re engaged but aren’t revealing to whom (maybe each other?) . . . “Ally McBeal” seems to be falling apart as Courtney Thorne-Smith (‘Georgia’) is the latest to say she’s had enough and would like her own sit-com . . . Word is soon-to-marry Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta-Jones are expecting twins . . .Tabloids are saying OJ Simpson and his (currently alive) girlfriend are engaged to be married (they’re registered with the Ginsu people).

OPENING IN THEATERS TODAY:
Meg Ryan, Diane Keaton and Lisa Kudrow play sisters dealing with the approaching death of their curmudgeonly father Walter Matthau in the comedy “Hanging Up” . . . “Boiler Room”, a look at the sub-culture of the stock market, stars Giovanni Ribisi and Ben Affleck . . . The no-name sci-fi adventure “Pitch Black”, about  marooned space travelers struggling for survival on a sun-scorched distant planet . . . Bruce Willis stars as a mob kingpin hiding out with the help of the Witness Protection Program in the comedy “The Whole Nine Yards” . . . After 8 Oscar nominations, “American Beauty” is cleverly being re-released (can you say $$?).

WHO WANTS TO MARRY A FAKE?
If that ‘motivational speaker and real-estate tycoon’ on FOX’s trashy special “Who Wants To Marry A Multi-Millionaire?” Tuesday is really a wealthy mogul, it must have happened real quick. Our Internet research reveals that Rick Rockwell was working as a stand-up comedian in some fairly humble clubs as late as 1999. He also has screen credits for B-movie sequels “Return of the Killer Tomatoes”, “Killer Tomatoes Strike Back”, and “Killer Tomatoes Eat France!”. (Hmm, let’s see – a 2-bit actor and stand-up comedian. You don’t think the FOX folks would lie to us would they?)

MAYBE HIS NAME IS ‘CORLEONE’:
The FBI is investigating a Montreal Web server looking for a teenager using the ‘Net nickname ‘Mafiaboy’. Seems that hacker who’s been shutting down some of the world’s most popular Websites may be Canadian. (First clue – he never strikes during a Habs game.)

FRESH AIR:
Canada and the US have begun negotiations in Ottawa aimed at reducing cross-border air pollution levels by 85% starting in 2003. (Step one – get Howard Stern off Canadian radio.)
