TONIGHT MTV’s “The Real World” begins its 17th season, this time in Key West FL where 7 pretty strangers will live together, love together & get into some nasty fights . . . iTunes has passed another benchmark as the 1-billionth tune has just been downloaded from the online music distributor (it was Coldplay’s “Speed Of Sound”) . . . THIS WEEK in London UK, authors Michael Baigent & Richard Leigh are suing for infringement of copyright, claiming Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code” didn’t just borrow a theory, it stole the whole thrilling jigsaw puzzle they created in their book, “Holy Blood, Holy Grail” . . . 28-year-old “Lost” star Jorge Garcia says he’s stopped living on ‘rum & burritos’ in order to shed 30 lbs after TV viewers complained his portly frame didn’t mesh with the castaway storyline . . . Reese Witherspoon has surpassed Julia Roberts to become the ‘Highest Paid Actress of All-Time’, negotiating $29 million for the upcoming film “Our Family Trouble” (Julia got $24 million for “Mona Lisa Smile”) . . . • George Michael – When cops found him slumped over the wheel of his Range Rover in London’s West End, they also reportedly found cannabis, GHB (aka liquid Ecstasy), and a variety of sex toys & masks. He’s out on bail while the substances are analyzed.
• George Strait – TONIGHT he kicks off the all-star concert series at the annual “Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Other acts scheduled during the 20-day event include Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn, Gretchen Wilson, Lonestar, Martina McBride, Toby Keith & Trisha Yearwood.
• Korn – Their hometown of Bakersfield CA has honored them by naming a small stretch of road near the local arena ‘Korn Row’.
• Maroon 5 – Frontman Adam Levine says he’s finished collaborating with other artists for now because he wants to focus on writing the band’s new album.
• Tim McGraw – “Redbook” magazine has just named him ‘Hottest Husband’ in the music biz.

• “The Ice Harvest” ( Crime Comedy – DVD/VHS ): John Cusack & Billy Bob Thornton portray small-time schemers dangerously out of their depth as they attempt to swindle the local mob out of some money on Christmas Eve.
• “Lady & the Tramp: 50th Anniversary Edition” ( Animated Family – DVD ): Disney technicians went through close to 340,000 frames of the 1955 original classic and digitally removed some 30 million pieces of dust and dirt.
• “Pride & Prejudice” ( Romantic Period Drama – DVD/VHS ): Keira Knightley is Oscar-nominated for her role in this latest bigscreen version of Jane Austen’s novel about 5 sisters in Georgian England whose lives are turned upside-down when a wealthy young man & his best friend arrive in their neighborhood.
• “Walk the Line” ( Musical Biography – DVD ): The Oscar-nominated bio-film is out in widescreen & full-screen editions, plus a 2-disc ‘Special Edition’ ($40) with extended musical performances & other features. Joaquin Phoenix is nominated for ‘Best Actor’ for his portrayal of Johnny Cash; Reese Witherspoon for ‘Best Actress’ for her role as June Carter.
• “Where the Truth Lies” ( Mystery Thriller – DVD ): Kevin Bacon & Colin Firth star in Canadian director Atom Egoyan’s tale about a celebrated comedy team (loosely inspired by Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis) who break up due to a scandal involving a beautiful woman found dead in their hotel suite. Based on a Rupert Holmes novel. Partially shot in Toronto & Brantford ON.
• “Yours, Mine & Ours” ( Family Comedy – DVD ): Dennis Quaid & Rene Russo star as a Coast Guard Admiral & a free-spirited widow who impulsively elope and join their families, causing a slapstick war of opposites. A loose remake of the 1968 Henry Fonda/Lucille Ball film.

THE OSCAR EFFECT:
The Oscars may be more than just annual awards, they can also be a passport to a longer life. A study of actors has found that Oscar-winners live, on average, almost 4 years longer than nominees who go home empty-handed. Actors aren’t the only people who reap benefits: Dr Donald Redelmeier of Toronto’s Sunnybrook & Women’s College Health Sciences Centre has also found that Oscar-winning directors live longer than non-winners, and male directors live an average 4.5 years longer than actors.

• A man in Bogota, Colombia has been sentenced to 4-years’ house arrest for slapping a woman’s bottom as he rode by on his bicycle, sparking local debate on whether the punishment fits the crime.
• NYC authorities have charged 4 men with illegally harvesting & selling body parts from more than 1,000 corpses over the past 4 years, possibly including the remains of PBS-TV’s late “Masterpiece Theatre” host, Alistair Cooke.
• Poodunnit? A new weapon is being developed in the war on dog dirt in Britain – DNA testing. Doo dumped in public areas will be scooped up and compared to DNA taken from canine suspects. DNA matches will result in fines up to $2,000, but police admit the problem will be catching dogs ‘in the act’.
