BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
[***UPDATE***] ★ “Stranger Things” — one of Netflix’s most popular series — will conclude in season 5. In a letter to fans Thursday, Duffer Brothers, creators of the twisty science fiction series, said: “Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for ‘Stranger Things.’ At the time, we predicted the story would last 4 to 5 seasons. It proved too large to tell in 4, but — as you’ll see for yourselves — we are now hurtling toward our finale.” The news comes as Netflix announced that the next season of the series (season 4) will debut in 2 parts this summer. The first part will premiere on May 27 and the second part will hit on July 1.

BREW HA-HAs:
➠ Scientists say they’ve “cracked the code” on perfect non-alcoholic beer. A team from the University of Copenhagen say, after years of research, they’ve come up with a way to produce a group of small molecules called monoterpenoids, which provide the hoppy-flavor and aroma that non-alcoholic beer lacks, and then add them to the beer at the end of the brewing process. No brewer has been able to correctly do this before. The scientists also point out their way of brewing is much more sustainable, and could also be applied to brewing regular beer. (So, they’ve invented American beer that tastes like Canadian beer?)
➠ A massive new “beer spa” is opening In Ontario and it will be the largest in the world. The website for Muskoka Beer Spa in cottage country north of Toronto says it will feature an outdoor pool, 2 large hot tubs, dump buckets and 4 saunas, in a nature setting. You can grab a beer from the outdoor cocktail hut or attached craft brewery and enjoy it in lounge areas around the pools, or sit in the beer garden. Guests will be able to stay in cozy cabins which include a draft beer tap in the room, along with a wet bar. But its not ALL beer and burping. Think of a Nordic spa experience with a beer festival twist. The beer spa will have mobile treatments including massage therapy. There will also be yoga and mindfulness classes — sorry no beer allowed there. Live music events are also planned. The Muskoka Beer Spa opens April 7. (You had me at ‘beer’. And at ‘spa’. But moreso at ‘beer’…)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A museum security guard was so bored on his first day at work that he ruined a million-dollar painting by drawing eyes on the faceless figures depicted in the artwork. Anna Leporskaya’s “Three Figures”, painted in the 1930s, was on display at the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center in Yekaterinburg, Russia, when someone noticed that, of the 3 faceless figures depicted in the avant-garde piece, 2 of them now had small dots for eyes. An investigation later revealed that an unnamed security guard, who was on his first day on the job, got bored and drew the eyes on the painting using a Yeltsin Center-branded pen. The man, who worked for a private security company, has since been fired and faces a fine and jail time. (Officially, he’s been charged with “defacing de faceless!”)
➢ (***Caution: “Farts”***) Tesla owners have been banned from making their cars “fart” after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it violated safety standards. As a result, the electric carmaker is recalling nearly 579,000 vehicles in the US. Tesla’s vehicle’s have what the company calls a “Boombox” function, which allows drivers to play sounds through external speakers while it is moving, effectively turning it into a boombox on wheels. The feature debuted in a software update in 2020, presented as a way to increase pedestrian visibility through warning sounds. One of the ‘warning sounds’ included was a “fart” setting, allowing drivers to draw attention to their cars with the sound of flatulence. (Draw attention? This explains a lot about my crazy Uncle Larry!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2t7y3aat

DID YOU KNOW?
Attractive people have better immune systems, according to a new study published by the academic journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Researchers recruited 150 women and men, and had their photos rated by 500 other volunteers. The researchers then collated those ratings and cross-examined them with the results of the blood tests. They found that more-attractive participants’ blood was found to have better-functioning immunity processes. What does this mean? As the study lead put it: “People who go out to a bar looking to talk to someone attractive are often dismissed as being shallow and told, ‘It is not all about looks.’ But they are really just following their instincts to find a high-quality mate.”

BS CHRONOMETER 2.18.22
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Battery Day”, on the birth date of Count Alessandro Volta (1745-1827), the Italian physicist credited with developing the first electric cell in 1800. His vital invention is now used everywhere from smoke alarms to phones, and comes in all shapes, sizes, and power capacities. (But is rarely included when you buy stuff…)
• “Drink Wine Day”, to embrace the positive benefits of wine — such as new friends, reduced risk of heart disease, and the enhancement of food and life (not to mention contributing to my flawless dance moves…).
• “Thumb Appreciation Day”, devoted to the digit that helps make us human . . . the opposable thumb. Of course, a few other animals can also celebrate, including koalas, opossums, and pandas; as well as chimps, gorillas, and orangutans, which have opposable thumbs . . . on all 4 limbs. (Wow, I’ve got thumb envy!)
• “Crab-Stuffed Flounder Day”, this one-of-kind dish is composed of a stuffing made with crab meat, bread crumbs, butter, and seasonings, all stuffed into the whole flounder or rolled up into the fillets and baked.
• “Pluto Discovery Day”, Astronomer Clyde W. Tombaugh discovered Pluto on February 18, 1930, at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. It was considered one of the 9 planets in the solar system until 2006, when it was demoted to “dwarf-planet” status.
• “National Caregivers Day” (in the US), honoring the health care professionals who provide long-term and hospice care, and to give the thumbs-up to anyone who provides care to other people. (Let them know you care!) [***NOTE: Canada celebrates National Caregivers Day on April 6***]
SATURDAY-
• “Tug-of-War Day”, a celebration of the competitive sport in which 2 teams hold opposite ends of a rope and attempt to pull the other towards them in order to win. The spectacle has a long history all over the world. (And works best if there is a mud pit in the middle!)
• “Chocolate Mint Day”, a celebration of one of the all-time great flavor pairings (and one of the all-time great Girl Guide cookie flavors!)
• “Lashes Day”, to appreciate both real and false eyelashes for the beauty they add to women (and men). Not only do they make our eyes “pop”, they also help keep foreign material from entering our eyes and prevent eye moisture from evaporating. (“I sentence you to two lashes…”)
• “Prevent Plagiarism Day”, to call attention to the rampant problem of high-tech theft of words, images and ideas that is all too easy in the internet age. (I may or may not have stolen this from Wikipedia…)
SUNDAY-
• “Cherry Pie Day”, honoring the second-most-popular fruit pie, behind only apple pie.
• “Day of Solidarity with Muslim, Arab, and South Asian Immigrants”, observed since 2002.
• “World Day of Social Justice”, the 14th annual, initiated by the UN to promote solutions to global issues such as poverty, exclusion, and unemployment. 2022 theme: “Achieving Social Justice through Formal Employment.”
• “Love Your Pet Day”, as if you need some kind of excuse.
• “Northern Hemisphere Hoodie-Hoo Day”, when you’re encouraged to go outdoors at noon and yell “Hoodie-Hoo!” at the top of your lungs to relieve Winter blahs and encourage the arrival of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere (which is one month away…whether you yell “Hoodie-Hoo” or not…).
• “Clean Out Your Bookcases Day”, how about giving away the books that no longer interest you? By donating your old books, you could enrich the lives of others. Today, go to one of your bookcases at work or home and get organized! (BookcasES? How many do they think I have?)
• “Handcuff Day”, on this day in 1912, a patent was granted to George Carney, for a swinging arm-type of adjustable, ratcheting handcuff. (Fun in the sheets, but not on the streets!)
