BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Joe Manganiello has finally made his romance with Caitlin O’Connor Instagram-official — days after the pair reportedly moved in together. The “Magic Mike” actor shared a series of images, including a sweet selfie of the pair at a Tool concert. In his caption, Manganiello mentioned his busy week promoting his upcoming game show “Deal or No Deal Island”, getting his tattoos touched up, and filming a music video. At the end of the caption, he added: “And celebrated Valentine’s Day with Tool & Caitlin…(heart emoji).” O’Connor has appeared in several TV shows, including “Two and a Half Men” and “Ray Donavan”. ★ BAFTA bosses have explained Matthew Perry’s exclusion from the “In Memoriam” segment during the British Academy Film Awards. The ceremony on Sunday featured a moving tribute to film industry figures who have died over the last year, including Jane Birkin, Carl Weathers, and Tina Turner, but the “Friends” star was left out. A statement from BAFTA says: “We confirm he will be honored in our forthcoming BAFTA television awards in May, and on the in memoriam section on our website.” Though best known for Friends, Perry had a film career that included more than a dozen credits, including “Fools Rush In”, “The Whole Nine Yards”, and “17 Again”.

★ “Wonka” has notched another sweet box office benchmark. The fantasy musical, starring Timothée Chalamet as the eccentric chocolatier, has crossed $600 million globally. After 10 weeks on the big screen, “Wonka” has generated $210 million in North America and $395 million internationally for a worldwide tally of $605 million. It’s a notable milestone because only 7 films that were released in 2023 managed to surpass the $600 million mark.

★ Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix are expecting another bundle of joy. On Friday, she arrived at the Berlinale International Film Festival and cradled her growing baby bump while posing for pictures on the carpet. The “Carol” star wore a strapless, floor-length gown with black draped material that subtly showed off her bump for the event, which was in support of her new film, “La Cocina”. Phoenix and Mara already are parents to son River — who was born in 2020 and is named after Joaquin’s older brother, actor River Phoenix, who died in 1993.

★ Gordon Ramsay made a fan’s dream come true. The TV chef posted a touching TikTok video of him meeting longtime fan Madison, who has been diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer. Ramsay flew Madison to see him in Miami after she shared her goal of wanting to meet him as part of a “bucket list” video on TikTok that went viral in January — which has amassed over 7 million views. Footage in Ramsay’s vid showed Madison getting emotional as she held hands with him, before he gave her a hug. The pair were also seen laughing as Ramsay gave Madison a few twirls while dancing together in his restaurant, Hell’s Kitchen. They also enjoyed dinner together. LINK: http://tinyurl.com/tc7m5wf4

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Beyoncé – Despite the controversy surrounding her new country song ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’, and whether country radio should play it, it debuted at #54 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. That’s also in spite of the fact that “Dukes of Hazzard” star/country singer John Schneider compared her to a dog marking its territory while talking about her dive into country music, in a TV interview.
• Megan Thee Stallion – has launched her “Hot Girl Systems” collection. The joint venture with Nike includes her Nike By You Air Max 97 sneakers, which fans can customize with one of 4 colorways: Queen Flame, Tina Snow, Hottie, and Dark Flame. The shoes come with a glittery trim and silver “Hottie” charms. LINK: http://tinyurl.com/yncj7cvh
• Rod Stewart — has sold his back catalogue for close to $100million. He reached an agreement with Irving Azoff’s Iconic Artists, meaning the company now owns his publishing catalogue, recorded music and a stake of Stewart’s likeness and image rights. The company has previously purchased the back catalogues of The Beach Boys, Cher and Dean Martin.
• Ozzy Osbourne — was the clear leader in the first week of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame fan voting for 2024. As of Sunday afternoon, Ozzy had 116,000 votes, ahead of Peter Frampton (96,000), Foreigner (95,600), Dave Matthews Band (93,000), Cher (82,000), Lenny Kravitz (71,000), and Mariah Carey (60,000). • Van Halen — HarperCollins Publishers has announced an October 22 release date for Alex Van Halen’s book “Brothers”. Not many details so far, but the 384-page book is categorized under “Biography & Autobiography” and is available for pre-sale for $32.00. LINK: http://tinyurl.com/4vpn2p23

• Morgan Wallen — The rumors are true: He’s the next star who’s planning to open a bar on Nashville’s Lower Broadway strip. Late last week, he sent out a press release confirming he is behind “This Bar and Tennessee Kitchen”, set to open this year. Plans for the 30,000 square foot establishment call for 3 live stages and a rooftop, plus a gift shop.
• Gabby Barrett – She and her fellow musician husband Cade Foehner are now parents of 3. She posted that she gave birth to their second daughter on Saturday. The new baby’s name is Ivy Josephine Foehner, and in her post, Barrett clarified that she’ll go by ‘Ivy Jo’. LINK: http://tinyurl.com/mr36wh39

SHOOTING THE BULL

MARS MISSION ON EARTH:
It’s not exactly a “job opportunity”, but it’s definitely an opportunity to do something unique. NASA has put out the call for volunteers to participate in its second yearlong simulated Mars mission. The space agency is looking for 4 people for its “Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog”, starting next spring. The selected crew members will be housed in a 1,700-square-foot 3D-printed habitat. The Mars Dune Alpha habitat at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston is designed to simulate what life might be like for future explorers on the red planet. During their stay, volunteers will perform habitat maintenance and grow crops, among other tasks. The habitat also has a 1,200-square-foot sandbox attached to it for simulated spacewalks. It’s a paid gig, but no word on how much. NASA is accepting applications on the CHAPEA website from now through April 2. LINK: https://chapea.nasa.gov/
(So, basically COVID lockdowns all over again?)
(Light maintenance and growing stuff, then having trouble walking around? That’s not unique – that’s bachelorhood!)

SCIENTISTS SAY:

☞ Older people tend to use the wrong emojis. A new study out of the University of Nottingham found that older people commonly misuse emojis — such as surprised, fearful, sad and angry reactions — to express their emotions through texting. Researchers tested a group of 253 Chinese and 270 United Kingdom adults, and found “a negative association between age and accuracy in emoji recognition in general.” The study’s lead author said: “Some ‘universal’ facial emotions may not be ‘universal’ when they transfer to emoji.” (Grandma, did you REALLY mean to send that “eggplant”?)
☞ People who experience “FOMO” are more likely to be promiscuous. FOMO, an acronym for “Fear Of Missing Out” popularized by author Patrick J. McGinnis in 2004, has become a popular shortform on social media. But a new study published in Current Research in Behavioral Sciences found FOMO goes back waaay before that. Co-author Adam Davis said they determined that “higher levels of FOMO were associated with a greater desire to seek out short-term sex partners.” (Excuse me while I go over the last 3 years of my teenagers’ social media posts…!)

COMEBACKS:
❑ Cassette tapes, believe it or not, are the cool thing to collect in Japan. Once thought to be a relic of the past, the humble rectangle of magnetic film is experiencing a renaissance, charming a new generation of music fans with its nostalgic appearance and distinctly warm and rich sound. Some stores in Tokyo are expanding their cassette tape sections, signaling a resurgence of compact analog recording media. In a world where the norm is to listen to music through digital media, such as streaming services, one retailer attributes the recent popularity of cassettes to the fact that music enthusiasts can “own and feel attached” to them: “For the younger generation, they are novel, and for those who used them before, they evoke nostalgia about their early days of listening to music.” (Plus, they’re a great way to relax and “unwind”!)
❑ Gen Z definitely has a thing about early 2000s technology. People in that age group have been known to ditch iPhones for flip phones, bring back digital cameras, buy up used iPods, and even use iPod Minis as hair clips. The next target? The landline phone. In a time when landlines are almost obsolete, some say that Gen Z’s fascination with the supposedly retro tech could spark a resurgence. What’s the attraction? One 24-year-old New Yorker said: “Having a landline really bridges that gap between reality and my childhood fantasy. I feel like the main character in my favorite TV shows – ‘One Tree Hill’, ‘The OC’, ‘Gilmore Girls’ – when I use it.” (Also: “Golden Girls’, ‘Murder, She Wrote’ and ‘The Waltons’!)

DID YOU KNOW?
The ampersand (&) used to be the 27th letter of the alphabet. To avoid confusion with the word “and”, people added “per se” before its name when reciting the alphabet, so that it ended: X, Y, Z, and per se. This all ran together, and the term “ampersand” was born.
