(***UPDATE***) ★ Ronnie Spector, the swaggering 1960s pop icon with the sky-high beehive whose sultry, quavering voice-powered numerous hits for The Ronettes, including ‘Be My Baby’ has died of cancer at 78. Spector, also known for ‘Baby I Love You’, was married to songwriter and record producer Phil Spector from 1968-74. Her family said in a statement that Ronnie Spector “was filled with love and gratitude”, and asked that donations be made to your local women’s shelter or to the American Indian College Fund.

★ After 3 straight years without a formal host of the Oscars, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will bring back an emcee for Hollywood’s biggest night. ABC and Hulu chief Craig Erwich has announced that there will be a host this year, though he stopped short of saying who it will be. The Oscars telecast has been host-free since 2019 when Kevin Hart was scheduled for the job, but stepped down after his old tweets and comments, that were considered homophobic, resurfaced. The Academy Awards are scheduled for March 27.

★ Simon Cowell and his girlfriend Lauren Silverman are engaged. The couple, who have been dating since 2004 and welcomed son Eric in 2014, got engaged on Christmas Eve in Barbados, where they first met. The proposal took place during a family vacation and the moment was extra special as their 7-year-old son Eric and Silverman’s eldest son Adam were also present. A source says: “They are both super happy. They’ve been together a long time now and adore each other so it’s not a huge surprise to their close friends.”

★ The infamous home from the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street” has a new owner. Someone has just dropped $3 million for the privilege of tossing and turning all night. Aside from being a great location for a Halloween party, the 3-bedroom, 4½ bathroom L.A. home has some impressive features like walnut floors, spacious backyard patios, a pool . . . and a bed that devours you whole, if you remember the movie. Despite its place in Hollywood horror history, the home screams peaceful suburban bliss, and was originally listed around Halloween for $3.25 million.

SHOOTING THE BULL
THE BOOK ON BOOKS:
When it comes to what makes you happy, is one form of media, like reading or listening to music, any better than another, like say, playing video games? Not really, according to a team of researchers. the study, by scientists in the UK and Austria, tracked media use of nearly 2,200 Brits for 2 months. What they found is that it didn’t matter much how much time people spent with their nose in a book versus using technology, such as TV, movies or video games. Both reading and the use of tech had roughly the same impact on a person’s sense of well-being. Study leader Niklas Johannes, from the University of Oxford, said: “Although many of us believe that traditional media, like books or music are good for us, surprisingly, we don’t really have good evidence whether that’s the case. In fact, this belief that newer media are harmful but traditional media are beneficial can be rather elitist.”
(Then took off his glasses and labcoat, fired up a bong, and went back to his Mortal Kombat tournament!)
(OK, now ask parents which makes THEM happier – their kids spending 6 hours reading, or 6 hours playing GTA!)
(OK, but what if I read a book…online? Does that make me DOUBLY kinda-happy?)

OMICRON AND ON:
Even though an Omicron-specific COVID vaccine is expected to be ready by March, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the leading infectious disease expert in the US, said the highly transmissible variant will likely “find just about everybody.” Another expert agrees, saying an updated vaccine “may not matter” because “everybody’s going to be infected.” Dr. Shaun Truelove, an infectious disease epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, says the Omicron variant spread so quickly that vaccine developers couldn’t make a targeted vaccine in time, and now, it’s not clear whether one is needed…or how it should be used. Truelove says that we also don’t know how long omicron-induced immunity will last, but an omicron-specific booster could provide “substantial benefit” if immunity wanes, even potentially against future variants.
(Ever notice that that even the so-called experts who work for the CDC and the WHO…90% of the time, their answer to any question is: “We don’t know”?)
(I guess working on a vaccine now for the NEXT variant isn’t an option? Just asking…)

SPICE ADVICE:
Yes, every fast-food chain these days has a spicy sandwich, but Arby’s new “Diablo Dare” is so hot, it includes something to “put out that fire”. Through Feb. 6, Arby’s is selling what it calls the “spiciest sandwich on the market”. The Diablo Dare costs $5.99 and includes a 12-ounce vanilla milkshake for free. The sandwich has 5 sources of spice, including a layer of ghost pepper jack cheese, fiery hot seasoning, fire-roasted jalapenos, a special BBQ sauce, and it’s all placed in between a red chipotle bun. Customers can choose a crispy chicken patty or smoked brisket for the protein.
(As if you’re going to taste it…)
(Can I get hot sauce with that?)

BOLDEST DESIGN PROPOSALS FOR 2022 – AND BEYOND:
➢ A sustainable desert city: Billionaire Marc Lore has outlined his vision for “Telosa,” a new city intended to house 5 million people. The 150,000-acre metropolis, built from scratch in the desert, promises eco-friendly architecture, sustainable energy production and a drought-resistant water system. He just needs $400 billion. (Yeah, to get that kind of funding, you’re going to have to re-name it “Gatorade City” or something!)
➢ Robot Forest Rangers: To combat deforestation, an Israeli industrial design student came up with 3 autonomous forest rangers named Rikko, Chunk and Dixon. The Forest Ranger Druids would support reforestation and sustainable management. Chunk would prune and mow vegetation; Dixon would plant seedlings and Rikko would collect info and provide mapping and monitoring services.
➢ A 100% recyclable BMW: BMW has unveiled designs for a concept car made entirely from recycled – and 100% recyclable – materials. The BMW i Vision Circular, would be made using 3D printing to reduce waste and offcuts, and lifespan would be extended thanks to detachable components that can easily be swapped out for new ones. (Plus, being a BMW, it doesn’t require turn signals!)
➢ Floating mobile houses: Sony dreamed up a series of mobile homes floating in Tokyo Bay. Responding to the threat of rising sea levels, their designers imagine these homes for a new breed of “sea nomads.” Self-propelled by water jets, each would clean its own water and feature solar panels for electricity, and could connect to one another to form a larger, more stable structure during storms. (And during parties!)
➢ Airdropped emergency shelters: This is a futuristic solution for people displaced by natural disasters or conflict: emergency shelters that can be airdropped into dangerous or hard-to-reach places. Developed at the Architectural Association’s Design Research Lab in London, it envisages an airplane releasing up to 500 units, known as Gravitons, that form parachutes in mid-air. After landing, they would auto-inflate into networks of habitable pods designed to collect rainwater and generate energy.

DID YOU KNOW?
According to a new survey, most men are not exactly thrilled with their appearance. On average, 1,000 men in the US and UK rated their attractiveness as just 5.9 on a scale of 1 to 10. Overall, 41.9% said they’re happy with the way they look. And 37.1% of respondents rated themselves below the 5.9 average.
