BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Promotional images for Jeremy Renner’s TV show “Mayor of Kingstown” have been edited to remove injuries from the actor’s face after his recent accident. He was originally shown bloodied and bruised in the artwork for the drama’s second season. Co-creator Hugh Dillon says it was “good of the network” to change it. A snowplow accident left Renner in critical condition earlier this month, but he revealed on Tuesday he has left hospital and is recovering at home. Reports surfaced this week, however, that he’ll require more surgery and faces a long road to recovery.

★ Channing Tatum has revealed plans to remake the classic romance movie “Ghost”. In an interview, he announced that he has attained rights to the 1990 film, and he’ll potentially playing the Patrick Swayze role. Ghost was one of the highest-grossing movies of the ‘90s and won 2 Oscars, including Best Supporting Actress for Whoopi Goldberg. His production company, Free Association, is putting the project together, but Tatum cautions: “We’re going to do something different” it “needs to change a little. Ghost starred Swayze as banker ‘Sam Wheat’, whose ghost tries to save his girlfriend, ‘Molly Jensen’, played by Demi Moore.

★ Jennifer Lopez says it was her — not Christina Aguilera — who was meant to kiss Madonna, in addition to Britney Spears, during the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. Instead, Madonna smooched Spears with Aguilera onstage near the end of the iconic VMA performance, which shocked fans worldwide. In a new interview, J-Lo says she was filming a movie in Canada at the time, and she had already met up with Madonna and Spears to plan the event. Quote: “And I just couldn’t get off the film … so they got Christina to do it.”

★ Pamela Anderson was “crushed” and “devastated” when she divorced Tommy Lee in 1998. She writes in an excerpt of her upcoming “Love, Pamela” memoir, that the end of her marriage to the Mötley Crüe drummer was “the hardest, lowest, most difficult point of [her] life.” They began their whirlwind relationship in 1995, tying the knot just 4 days later and going on to welcome sons Brandon, now 26, and Dylan, now 25. Anderson calls her romance with Lee “the only time [she] was ever truly in love” in her book, which hits stores Jan. 31.

★ The future of the “Avatar” franchise might include a fire tribe of Na’vi, but it won’t include Vin Diesel. Despite the “Fast and Furious” star strongly indicating in 2019 that he joined James Cameron’s cast. Franchise producer Jon Landau has confirmed that Diesel isn’t in the “Avatar” sequels after all. Rumors of Diesel’s casting were ignited when the actor posted video with Cameron from the “Avatar” set, saying: “There is one person in Hollywood I’ve always wanted to work with and learn from, and so, all things come, I guess, to those that wait.” Landau now clarifies, saying: “People took that out of context.”

★ Craig Ferguson, the comic who anchored CBS’ “Late Late Show” for 9 years, plans to make a return to wee-hours programming. Sony Pictures Television aims to launch a new half-hour syndicated late-night talk show led by Ferguson in the fall. “Channel Surf with Craig Ferguson” will review “the shocking, surprising and hilarious moments of the week’s shows,” joined by friends and guest stars. A pilot was shot this month, and Sony is offering the show to potential buyers this week in Los Angeles.

SHOOTING THE BULL
NATURAL REMEDY:
Simply getting out and enjoying nature can lessen the need for some medications, according to a new study. Researchers at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare found that visiting nature 3-4 times a week was associated with 36% lower odds of requiring blood pressure pills, 33% lower odds of using mental health medications, and 26% lower odds of using asthma medications. The study interviewed about 6,000 people in 3 of the largest cities in Finland about their use of green and blue spaces within a kilometer of their homes. The researchers also looked into the impact of being able to view green or blue spaces from home, and found that had no impact on use of medications, leading the team to surmise “Just seeing nature didn’t really move the needle, but experiencing it did”. Physical activity is thought to be a key factor in the health benefits of enjoying nature.
(The problem is this: I feel like whenever I’m out in nature, I’m either behind a lawn mower – or shoveling snow!)
(On the other hand, if you’re going to [***local outdoor festival***] this summer, I’d suggest you still bring along your heart meds!)

SUPER BOWL:
Japanese scientists say they have developed an electric spoon and bowl combination that makes food taste saltier. The team, from Kirin Holdings Company and Meiji University, say their invention uses weak electrical stimulation to enhance the salty taste of low-sodium foods. The “Electric Salt” devices, slated to launch in Japan this year, reportedly increases the salt taste by 1.5 times without raising blood pressure. The Electric Salt Spoon and Electric Salt Bowl use “electric taste sensation” technology, which transmits sodium ions from food to the diner’s mouth, to create a sense of saltiness — without any effect on the human body. The current passes through the food from the tip of the spoon and from the inside of the bowl by holding it, according to the researchers, who have also developed electric chopsticks.
(I’d take all this with a pinch of salt!)
(I told my father about this. He said: “Just 1.5? Get me 4 of them!”)

SPORTS SURVEY
So, it’s the day of the big game…it’s “do or die” for your team…do you put on your lucky jersey? Your lucky undershorts? Do you sit in a certain “lucky” seat at home, and eat that special snack that you believe helps your team from afar? Well, if so, you’re not alone. Four in 10 sports fans admit they’re superstitious when it comes to critical games. In a survey of 2,000 who watch sports, 25% said they carry out unusual rituals ahead of a game to help improve their team’s luck. Of these, when watching at home, 23% must sit on the same part of the couch for any game, while 24% will kiss the logo of their beloved team. And 22% say they sometimes refuse to watch a game with certain people who they feel are unlucky. And when they feel the significance of the game is out of the control of their influence, 18% of sports fans say they don’t hesitate to call on a higher power – by praying.
The top rituals ahead of a big game are:
1. Kissing the badge or emblem of your team
2. Refusing to wash for the duration of the tournament
3. Sitting in the same ‘lucky’ spot to watch from home
4. Avoiding watching the event with specific ‘unlucky’ people
5. Sitting in the same ‘lucky’ seat when watching from the venue
6. Refusing to wash your ‘lucky’ item of clothing for the duration of the tournament
7. Putting on a specific sports shirt or jersey
8. Putting on a lucky pair of socks
9. Saying a prayer
10. Eating the same pre-game meal
(If I want to guarantee a [***local sports team***] victory, I have a sure-fire ritual. I just place a bet against them!)
(When I played, I had all kinds of superstitions. I’d eat the same pre-game meal, park in the same place, put my equipment on in the same order…until one day I realized that no matter what pre-game rituals I had…I still sucked!)

EXPENSIVE THINGS THAT PAY FOR THEMSELVES IN THE LONG RUN:
An AskReddit user asked: “What expensive purchase have you made that has paid for itself many times over because you saved money in the long run?” Here are some of the answers…
☞ Quality cold weather gear: Not only does it work better and look better, I’ve had a couple jackets for over 5 years, that see heavy use…I have a couple friends that basically buy and throwaway cheap gear every season. Works like (heck), looks like (heck), ends up in a landfill, costs more in the long run.
☞ New windows: “Replaced the old single pane metal framed windows. It was like a waterfall of cold air coming off of them, and the noise from the street was obnoxious. Heating bill was cut in half.”
☞ A nice bicycle: “I bought a $500.00 bicycle as my main transportation…doesn’t sound like a lot but when you’re only making 8 an hour, it took some time to save up for it. With public transportation at 2.50 a ride, the bike paid for itself in about 3 months…I still have it.”
☞ Rechargeable batteries: “Xbox players save millions.”
☞ A laser printer: “They’re expensive up front, but they will save you lots of money by no longer needing cartridges. Also is less wasteful”.
☞ Hair cutting scissors: “When my wife and I started dating, she wanted to learn to cut hair and wanted a pair of scissors that cost $25, which was a lot for us then. She offered that if I bought her the scissors, she’d cut my hair for free as long as we were together. After 25 years, she decided she had repaid me…still not a bad deal.”
☞ A houseboat: “I bought a 27′ sailboat to live on because rent here is outrageous. Cost $4,500, and moorage at a marina is about $170/month. Rent for a studio apartment here is $900-$1300; every month I save $600-$1,100, so the boat paid for itself in 4-9 months.”
☞ A bidet: “Not super expensive, but saves on toilet paper. I’ve used it for about a year and I love it.”
(Me? Definitely my divorce lawyer. What? Just me?)

DID YOU KNOW?
“Beetleburgers” could be on the menu at your local fast-food restaurant someday soon. According to new research. The creepy crawlers’ larvae — better known as mealworms — could act as a meat alternative to alleviate hunger worldwide. The process uses a fraction of the land and water and emits a smaller carbon footprint compared to traditional farming. French biotech company Ynsect is planning a global network of insect farms, including nurseries and slaughterhouses. According to those who know, when mixed with sugar, beetles taste just like real meat, and could also become an alternative to sausage or chicken nuggets.
