★ Shortly after news of Larry King’s death broke on Saturday, tributes to the long-time TV host began pouring in. Piers Morgan and Craig Ferguson were among the celebrities who honored him. Morgan looked back on his feud with King, tweeting: “Larry King was a hero of mine until we fell out after I replaced him at CNN & he said my show was ‘like watching your mother-in-law go over a cliff in your new Bentley.’ (He married 8 times so a mother-in-law expert). But he was a brilliant broadcaster & masterful TV interviewer.” Ferguson wrote: “He taught me so much. He was a true mensch. He probably even taught me that word…thanks for all the laughs. Say hi to [Don] Rickles.” Larry King was 87.

★ Dustin Diamond believes his cancer could have been caused by staying in cheap hotels. The 44-year-old “Saved by the Bell” star was recently diagnosed with advanced lung cancer, and is reportedly puzzled by how he got this type of cancer as it’s normally caused by smoking, and he is not a smoker. However, a rep says that the comedian worked all over the country on film sets and at clubs — and sometimes had to stay in pretty questionable hotels and motels, some of which may have had mold or asbestos … which he could have inhaled, causing his cancer. Diamond recently completed his first round of chemotherapy, and will be undergoing physical therapy.

★ Hopefully Dan Levy inherited his father’s sketch comedy chops. The “Schitt’s Creek” co-creator and son of Eugene Levy is set to host “Saturday Night Live” next month. Dan Levy will make his hosting debut on Feb. 6, joined by singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers. NBC says “SNL” will return from hiatus for a five-week run starting on Jan. 30, when John Krasinski will kick things off with musical guest Machine Gun Kelly.

★ The tricked out 1963 Chevy Impala once owned by Kobe Bryant is hitting the auction block, and it’s expected to sell for about $250,000. The car has a pretty famous and well-documented history. Kobe’s wife Vanessa went to West Coast Customs (the “Pimp My Ride” people) in 2006 and had them put together something special … so she could gift it to Kobe on Christmas morning. He got rid of the car around 2013 and now it’s changing hands once again — with the folks at Goldin Auctions running the sale.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Miley Cyrus – Another of her Los Angeles storage units has been broken into. Gone are some sentimental items including family photos. Some items have already been recovered but the break in is still being investigated by police. Thieves stole $10,000 worth of guitars from a different locker in December 2018.
• Halsey – Her “Manic World Tour”, scheduled for 2020 but postponed due to the pandemic, has officially been canceled. She wrote on Twitter: “Safety is the priority. I wish things were different. I love you. Dreaming of seeing your faces again.”
• Glastonbury Festival – The biggest festival in the UK, and one of the biggest in the world, has been cancelled again, casting doubt on whether other festivals will be able to go ahead in 2021. Last year’s 50th anniversary Glastonbury was to be headlined by Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar, but it was cancelled during the early stages of the pandemic in March 2020.
• The White Stripes – have shared a previously unreleased video of the band’s performance of ‘Seven Nation Army’ from their legendary 2007 Bonnaroo set. • The Flaming Lips — held the first “space bubble” concert in Oklahoma City Friday night. The concept was inspired by Wayne Coyne’s own bubble, in which he usually rolls over the crowd in during the band’s gigs. Audience members viewed the show from their own inflatable balls, while the band performed from their own inflatable balls on stage.
• Genesis — have pushed back their “The Last Domino? Tour” from an April start to September 15. Their first stage dates in 14 years will now begin with a gig in Dublin on September 15 and continue through Ireland and the UK through Oct. 1.
• Lady A – are now members of The Grand Old Opry. While recording their part for the Feb. 14 TV special “Grand Ole Opry: 95 Years of Country Music,” they were surprised onstage by long-time friend Darius Rucker, who extended the invitation. They later tweeted: “To say we are honored is an understatement. We are so grateful to be a part of this amazing family.”
• Amanda Shires — has released a new version of ‘Our Problem’ featuring Cyndi Lauper, Angie Stone, K.Flay, Lilly Hiatt, Linda Perry, Morgane Stapleton, Nona Hendryx, Peaches and Valerie June. The song, which also features Sheryl Crow on bass and Jason Isbell on guitar, was released to commemorate the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade.
• CMT –has revealed its 2021 list of the Next Women of Country, which recognizes and supports country music’s most promising and powerful female artists. This year’s artists to watch are: Ashland Craft, Priscilla Block, Brittney Spencer, Reyna Roberts, Hannah Dasher, MacKenzie Porter, Harper Grae, Tenille Arts, Sacha, and Chapel Hart.

DOORBELL-CAMPAIGN:
A Calgary, AB man is warning people who have doorbell cams that they may be the ones who are being watched. After getting a doorbell security cam for his house, Bill Douros says he was curious to see if anyone else could see his feed because he often has kids playing outside his home. Doorbell cams can be programmed to send their footage to owners’ computers and mobile devices. He easily found a site with listings of popular webcams and realized that there are more than a dozen in Calgary. On the website, he found that live feeds of people’s front steps, workspaces and private homes are open to the public. People with security cams are advised to reset the default password on their camera, and because these cameras stream over WiFi, their internet should also be password protected. What’s the danger? If a person’s location becomes known, their behavior can be monitored, including when the house is usually left unoccupied.
(Not to mention what time your teenagers get home!)

An online ad says “Candidates should have enthusiasm and eagerness to try confectionery products. FEELING THE BERN:

FOODS CREATED BY ACCIDENT:
⇒ Popsicles:  An 11-year-old soda left his soda-making equipment out on the porch on a cold night in 1905. Morning came, and he found that his mixture had frozen, capturing the stirring stick upright. Voila! Almost 20 years later, he applied for a patent for “Pop’s Sicles”.
⇒ Chocolate Chip Cookies:  A lodge owner ran out of baker’s chocolate, so she grabbed a bag of chocolate morsels, assuming that they would melt and blend with the cookie dough. They didn’t. It wasn’t long before people started to come over to her Massachusetts lodge just for the cookies.
⇒ Potato Chips:  In a restaurant in 1853, chef George Crum (Yup. Crum.) was frustrated by a customer who sent back his fried potatoes over and over, complaining that they were soggy and too thick. Sarcastically, the chef sliced a batch as thinly as he could, fried them, and covered them in salt. The customer loved them and spread the word about these thin, crunchy potato slices. (Then some weirdo decided to create a ‘ketchup’ flavor…)
⇒ Nachos:  Ignacio Nacho Araya, a restaurant manager in Mexico, was visited by 10 hungry military wives. When his efforts to find the chef failed, Nacho improvised. He covered tostadas with grated cheese and broiled it. The women loved his creation, the “Nacho’s Special.”
⇒ Cheese:  Centuries ago, an Arabian merchant journeyed across the desert, taking with him a supply of milk stored in a pouch made from a sheep’s stomach. The heat of the desert and enzymes from the pouch curdled the milk, which he ate and loved. (Not sure if I would have taken that chance…)
⇒ Cheese Puffs:  In the 1930s, the Flakall Company in Wisconsin had a machine that crushed grains to make livestock feed, and corn kernels were used to reduce clogging. The machine’s heat made the kernels puffy as they fell from the machine as waste. A man, who obviously enjoyed snacking, picked up these ribbons from the ground, added seasoning… and a new treat was born. (And before he knew it, he had orange fingers!)
⇒ Beer:  It was supposed to be bread. More than 3,000 years ago, the Mesopotamians hated it when their grains, stored to produce bread, became damp, causing them ferment into a liquid. (But hey, why settle for bread when you can have beer?)
⇒ Coffee:  Hundreds of years ago, an Ethiopian goatherd noticed his goats were being unusually cheerful and energetic, and he soon discovered that they had been devouring the beans and leaves of a particular tree. The man tried them, and shared them with a monk who was having trouble staying awake throughout prayers. The monks loved the new drink, and its effects.

• “Robbie Burns Day”, party time for Scots everywhere! Honoring Scotland’s national poet who was born January 25, 1759, and whose most famous composition was ‘Auld Lang Syne’. A traditional “Burns Supper” includes cock-a-leekie soup (fowl, leeks, and herbs), haggis (minced sheep’s heart, lungs, and liver mixed with oatmeal), neeps and tatties (mashed turnip and potatoes). The meal is then washed down with Scotch whisky toasts. (***See “Scots or Not?”, below***)

• “Intravenous Nurse Day”, saluting nurses whose main ambition in life is finding a good vein in patients’ forearms in which to insert a needle. In fact, medical insiders will tell you nurses often ogle and discuss the veins of unsuspecting people in public places. This is known as “nurse porn”.

• “Irish Coffee Day”, a delicious cocktail made with black coffee, sugar, Irish whiskey, and whipped cream. Joe Sheridan, a bartender at Foynes Airbase in Ireland, invented the concoction in 1942 as replenishment after a miserably cold 18-hour journey across the Atlantic.
