BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Speculation is mounting over the future of Jodie Whittaker after reports she will depart “Doctor Who” at the end of the upcoming series, putting an end to her tenure in the Tardis after three years. The BBC is refusing to comment on speculation that she has quit her role as the 13th Time Lord. Her Doctor Who tenure has been considered a success, with her debut in the show’s 2017 Christmas special becoming the most-watched episode a decade with 9 million viewers tuning in. Whittaker made history by becoming the first woman to play the Doctor, following Peter Capaldi.

★ Under normal circumstances, the release of a new movie with an all-star cast including George Clooney, Laura Dern and Charlie Sheen would be met with a huge buzz. But there’s nothing normal “Grizzly II: The Revenge”, a low-budget horror movie filmed in 1983 that’s only now making it to the screen. The movie, about a park ranger battling a giant bear that’s been terrorizing a state park, was filmed long before its actors became stars, and remained unfinished after one of the producers ran off with its budget. The movie remained in limbo until another company bought the rights to finish the film and release it. Clooney says he hasn’t seen it, and doesn’t want to, because “It was a bad time for hair and clothes.”

★ Ryan Reynolds stunned even some of his most loyal fans after casually revealing that his middle name is Rodney. While promoting Mint Mobile, he compared “paying $90 a month for wireless” to his middle name, which he joked “existed and could be used, but it sucks, so why would you?” Despite his full name being easily accessible with a quick Google search, many of his 16.9 million followers expressed disbelief, with one even tweeting that the fact was completely unexpected even after following his career for ‘nearly two decades.’

★ A movie based on the invention of the Rubik’s Cube is in the works. The film will tell the story how Professor Erno Rubik’s toy became a pop culture phenomenon in the ’80s and beyond. The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 and was licensed as a toy in 1980, and to date over 450 million have been sold around the world. No scheduled release date has been announced.

• Pink Floyd — A new website focused on the group’s post-1983 efforts has launched. It provides “a resource that spans Pink Floyd’s ‘David Gilmour era’, from the departure of Roger Waters through today,” according to publisher Ed Lopes-Reyes. LINK: www.publiusenigma.co.uk
• Elton John – joked that he’ll “kill [himself]” if he has to perform ‘Crocodile Rock’ again. • Tom Jones — The 80-year-old has new music coming out this year. In an interview, he said: “I recorded an album just before the lockdown, at the beginning of the year. During lockdown, we’ve been mixing it and putting it together. That’s what I’ll be looking forward to.”

The video debuted on NBC’s New Year’s Eve coverage.

SHOOTING THE BULL
MR. TeaKO’s T.K.O:
The man who went viral over Christmas for smashing a belligerent racist in the face with a can of Twisted Tea now has a nickname — MrTeaKO — and a huge online presence. At first, Barry Allen turned the other cheek when the customer of a Circle K shop in Elyria, Ohio was hurling derogatory terms at staff members. But then the unidentified man started calling Allen the n-word. And the final straw came when Allen dropped the can of Twisted Tea, and the man tried to kick it. Allen picked up the can and walloped it into the man’s face. When the man squared off, Allen threw him to the ground and slugged him repeatedly. The woman who filmed the encounter posted it right away, and Allen says when he phoned his wife to tell her what happened, she was already watching it online. By the time he drove the 2 blocks home, the video had been viewed 5,000 times. His wife is now capitalizing on his newfound celebrity — by creating a Twitter page dedicated to “MrTeaKO” with the handle “Mrs TeaKO OFFICIAL,” and the hashtag #TeaKO has gone viral.

(I’m not saying he’s a hero, but just so you know, Barry Allen is also the name of “The Flash”. So, actually, yes, I AM saying he’s a hero!)
(That explains why I just saw an ad for “Twisted Tea” holsters…)

OLD HABITS DIE – SOONER OR LATER:
Just in case you’re one of those weirdos who still hasn’t broken your New Year’s resolutions, here’s how long your need to hang in there until your changes become second nature — 21 days – maybe. That number comes from popular 1960 book called “Psycho-Cybernetics” by Maxwell Maltz, a plastic surgeon who noticed his patients seemed to take about 21 days to get used to their new faces. But according to a 2009 study, the times it takes to form a new habit (such as eating healthy, or NOT smoking) isn’t quite that clear-cut. Researchers at University College London found that, on average, it takes 66 days for a new habit to stick, and individual times varied from 18 to a whopping 254 days. Bottom line? To develop a new behavior, it’ll probably take 2 months, and don’t despair if it takes even longer.
(Unless you’re getting used to a new face. Then, it’ll only take 3 weeks!)
(And this is why my wife always adds a little incentive to my self-improvement projects…as in “If you don’t…)
(I’m thinking that those people who couldn’t change their behavior for 254 days were probably trying to stop procrastinating…)

THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2021 (if everything works out…):
✓ The Tokyo Olympics: After being postponed in 2020, they are now scheduled to begin this July. (And remember: New events include skateboarding and surfing!)
✓ 3 Missions to Mars: In 2020, China, the UAE, and NASA all launched Mars missions, all of which are expected to arrive at the Red Planet next month. 2021 will likely be the year of new discoveries on Mars.
✓ Traveling and large gatherings (and yes, concerts!): If the vaccines work out as planned, expect to see steps toward the lifting of travel bans, and the ability to attend large gatherings.
✓ UEFA Euro Championship: The 60th anniversary of the tournament was supposed to be held in 2020, but it was postponed to this year. Instead of one host region, the games will take place in 12 host countries around Europe.
✓ T20 Cricket World Cup: Same. It was scheduled for 2020 until…you know. Set for India in the fall.
✓ New climate policies and action: Many climate plans were back-burnered last year due to the pandemic. Now, China has pledged to go carbon neutral by 2060. Japan, South Korea and Canada have all made similar promises. And we may see more positive news at the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow this November.
✓ New TV shows and movies: The “Friends” reunion is set for March. A “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reboot will arrive, and the movies “Cinderella”, “No Time to Die” and Black Widow are all set to be released. Plus, a new “Coming to America”, a new “Fantastic Beasts” and a new “Dune” with Timothee Chalamet.
✓ 6G: Now is the time to brush up if you don’t understand 4G and 5G, because Japan and Korea are working on 6G, which could improve remote working and schooling, plus awesome things like holograms and virtual and augmented reality.
✓ Drone delivery: Walmart, Amazon, UPS and other companies are stepping up their drone game, so don’t be surprised if packages start landing at your door soon. (If I order a drone, will it be delivered by another drone, or will they just fly it over to my place?)
✓ Hugs! Hey, it could happen…

DID YOU KNOW?
Adobe Flash Player is no more. The browser plug-in that brought rich animations and interactivity to the early web, officially reached the end of its life with the ringing in of the New Year. Released in 1996, Flash was once one of the most popular ways for people to stream videos and play games online. But it was plagued with security problems and failed to transition to the smartphone era. Adobe will no longer offer security updates for Flash and has urged people to uninstall it. It will also stop videos and animations running in its Flash Player beginning Jan. 12.

• “Bird Day”, an annual observance with half a million adherents who celebrate through birdwatching, studying birds, and bird adoption. Part of the idea is to educate wannabe bird owners about the special issues involved with taking care of our fine feathered friends.

• “Twelfth Night”, the “Eve of Epiphany”. Tomorrow is the “Twelfth Day of Christmas” when, according to the carol, your true love should give to you ‘12 drummers drumming’. Different traditions mark the date of “Twelfth Night” on either the 5th or 6th of January.
• “Screenwriters Day”, most people think that the director created the vision for the movies they watch. They’re often surprised to discover that almost every movie or TV show was originally created, written, and rewritten long before the director ever heard of the project…by a screenwriter!

BS WHACK FACTS:
✓ Earth is closest to the sun in January.
✓ The Southern Hemisphere typically has milder winters than the Northern Hemisphere because it has less land and a more maritime climate.
✓ Every winter, at least one septillion (that’s 1 followed by 24 zeros) snow crystals fall from the sky.
✓ The average snowflake falls at about 3 mph.
✓ One inch of snow will produce just less than 1/10 of an inch of water when melted.
✓ There’s at least one instance of identical snowflakes. In 1988, two snowflakes collected from a Wisconsin storm were confirmed to be twins by an atmospheric research center.
