BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Bill Cosby thanked hundreds of fans who turned out for shows in Denver CO on Saturday as a small gathering of protesters denounced the comedian, who has been accused of sexual assault by more than a dozen women in the past 3 months. Outside the Buell Theatre in downtown Denver, about 40 protesters chanted “No more jokes!” and some pointed and shouted “Shame on you!” at ticket-holders as they lined up to get in for the first of 2 shows.

★ “Empire” star Terrence Howard says his past arrests for domestic abuse allegations were a byproduct of his rough-and-tumble upbringing and “not knowing how to deal with frustration”. During the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday he stressed that no criminal charges have ever been filed against him and he emphasized that he is now married with a new wife and brand new baby. Quote: “I’ve grown so much from anything that happened in the past.” FOX-TV has already ordered a 2nd season of “Empire” after airing just 2 episodes.

★ “Forrest Gump” actor Gary Sinise is staking his claim as king of the TV spin-offs after scoring a leading role in a new “Criminal Minds” project. Two years after wrapping up “CSI: NY”, the actor is returning to TV to head the cast of a “Criminal Minds” spin-off drama that will center on FBI agents who help US citizens in trouble abroad. Sinise will portray FBI veteran ‘Jack Garrett’ in the series, which will launch with a pilot episode later this year.

★ 26-year-old Julianne Hough (“Dancing With the Stars”) & former Disney star Vanessa Hudgens (“High School Musical”) are set to star as ‘Sandy’ and ‘Rizzo’ in a new live version of the musical “Grease”. “Grease: Live” is scheduled for broadcast January 31st, 2016 on FOX-TV. The 3-hour production follows the success of NBC-TV’s live musical shows “The Sound of Music Live!” and, most recently, “Peter Pan Live!” which aired in December.

★ And a new report contends that Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon signed a prenuptial agreement with a financial penalty for speaking publicly about any breakup. Cannon filed divorce papers last month following their decision to split in September. The pre-nup allegedly features a confidentiality clause stipulating that Cannon would have to pay his ex $250,000 for going public about their split, while Carey would have to hand him $500,000 for discussing it. The higher penalty reflects the fact that her financial worth dwarfed his when they wed.

EVEN FACEBOOK IS GOING RETRO:
Facebook is abuzz with a new game. Essentially, you re-post your first-ever Facebook profile picture, and then nominate 3 friends to do the same. Why would this ever become a thing? Seems dredging up old photos taps into a universal nostalgia for an earlier time/self/social network. It’s unclear where this started exactly, but some tech blogs have prematurely christened it the new ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ or ‘Neknomination’. And while it’s difficult to quantify or track the spread of memes on Facebook, the term ‘first profile picture’ is now being tweeted thousands of times per day. (As if we need more opportunities to embarrass ourselves on Facebook.)

DOES BLUE MONDAY REALLY EXIST?
Today, the 3rd Monday in January, is dubbed ‘Blue Monday’, supposedly the most miserable day of the year. The idea began when a travel company issued a press release in 2005 claiming that psychologist Dr Cliff Arnall had developed an equation to determine the year’s most dismal day based on weather, post-holiday season letdown, broken New Year resolutions, etc. The equation still appears on his website, but what you cannot find is any published data to back it up. To be fair, Arnall himself admits his equation is not particularly scientific. We may say we hate Mondays, but a 2008 Australian study found that the day that scores lowest for most employees’ morale is actually Wednesday. (Seems we all hate ‘Hump Day’?)

WORDS & PHRASES COINED 100 YEARS AGO:
A few terms that first came into common usage in 1915 …
• ‘Babe’ – This word was used to refer to an infant as far back as the Middle Ages, but the first documented use meaning ‘an attractive young woman’ dates from 1915.
• ‘Blues’ – Several songs previously included the word in their titles (“Dallas Blues”, “Memphis Blues”, etc) but use of the word as a musical genre came in “Chicago Sunday Tribune” in 1915.
• ‘Episode’ – First used to mean an installment of an entertainment series (as in “stay tuned for scenes from next week’s episode”) in “Moving Picture World” on November 13, 1915.
• ‘Jazz’ – In 1912 it meant energy, excitement, pep or restlessness, animation, excitability. The first reference to jazz as a musical genre is also from “Chicago Sunday Tribune” in 1915.
• ‘Lifestyle’ – The first recorded use of the term appeared in the publication “Mind”, when the author of an article referred to Impressionism as the ‘life-style of our age’.
• ‘Skinny’ – Skinny jeans are not so new; skinny meant tight-fitting a hundred years ago when a fashion report suggested: “Skinny clothes are in vogue this year.”

WHERE TO PRACTICE SHOOTING RAMPAGES:
If Disney World’s just not your speed, you can pull off the Hwy 192 tourist strip in nearby Kissimmee, Florida and shoot zombies in the head with a machine gun. The new ‘Machine Gun America’ attraction allows visitors – including children as young as 13 – to fire machine guns and other firearms in a variety of themed environments, from ‘007’ to ‘Western Shootout’ to ‘Gangster Land’ to yes, ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ (signs remind you: “Don’t forget, shoot ’em in the head”). There’s even a ladies-only theme called ‘Automatic Divas’. While the concept is new to Central Florida, similar attractions have been flourishing in Las Vegas. (Last Summer at an Arizona range, an instructor was killed when a 9-year-old girl lost control of an Uzi.)

BS AMAZING DOG FACTS:
✓ When your dog licks you, it probably wants something, like food or attention. Licking also releases endorphins that calm and relieve stress.
✓ A dog can smell anywhere from 10,000-to-100,000 times better than the average human. Canines have 300 million olfactory receptors, compared to our measly 6 million.
✓ Dogs sniff rear ends because secretions released by glands there reveal lots of information, ie: a dog’s gender, diet, and mood. It’s sort of like talking with chemicals.
✓ Dogs’ paws smell like popcorn or corn chips because they have a lot of bacteria and yeast that grow in the moisture that gets caught in the many folds and pockets between their toes.
✓ A common myth is that a dog’s mouth is a magically clean place. A canine mouth is actually brimming with bacteria. Fortunately, a lot of those germs are specific to the species.
