★ “Home Improvement” stars Tim Allen and Richard Karn are reuniting for the new History Channel reality competition series “Assembly Required”. Premiering Feb. 23, the series will see the “Tool Time” duo bring together the best and brightest handy-people from across the U.S. to push their building skills to the limit in head-to-head competition. Allen and Karn will choose items for the competitors to build, offering color commentary, and testing the final builds for quality, design, and functionality, with a grand prize of $5,000.

★ Jane Fonda will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at this year’s Golden Globes. The honor recognizes Fonda’s illustrious career in film, one that saw her top the box office and cement her name in movie history by starring in such classics as “Klute,” “The China Syndrome” and “9 to 5.” More recently, Fonda has appeared in the Netflix series “Grace & Frankie” as well as “Book Club” and “Youth.” Fonda is a seven-time Golden Globe winner and 15-time nominee. She will accept the honor on the Globes telecast, which will air Sunday, Feb. 28.

★ Annie Murphy is supporting Toronto’s Encampment Support Network. The “Schitt’s Creek” star auctioned off her very first red-carpet dress. The proceeds raised will benefit ESN, as well as another “awesome charity.” ESN is a volunteer-run network supporting people living in homeless encampments throughout the city. Murphy shared an update revealing the dress sold for $7,000 USD.

★ Warner Bros. is developing a new “Harry Potter” series for HBO Max. Sources close to HBO Max have confirmed that a new show set within the wizarding world of Harry Potter is in the early stages of development. They said that no writers, producers, actors or other talent are firmly attached to the project yet, but it is definitely moving forward. No word on what the focus of the show will be — what time period it will be set in or which characters it might follow.

• Miley Cyrus — will perform for healthcare workers at a special Super Bowl pre-game concert. She’s joined the line-up for the TikTok Tailgate event on Feb. 7. It will be attended by 7,500 vaccinated health care workers, who have also been invited to attend the Super Bowl in Tampa.
• Billie Eilish – ordered 70 boxes of Froot Loops online. She told Vanity Fair that after being catapulted to fame as a teen, “I’m like, I don’t know how much Froot Loops are. I tried to order one box of Froot Loops and I was like, Oh yeah, sure. It’s $35.” Thinking that must be what they cost, she placed the order, and wound up with 70 mini boxes of the cereal.
• Grammys – Record exec Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammy celebration is evolving into two events this year. He’ll host a 2-part virtual event to replace his usual bash at the Beverly Hilton. The first, on Jan. 30, will feature 20 of his favorite live performances, with stars like Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Sean Combs, and Gladys Knight sharing memories. Details on the second haven’t yet been revealed.
• Jon Bon Jovi – Despite the fact that he is one of the biggest rock stars on the planet, he says (Quote:) “My life is much more normal than one would imagine. There are no platinum records hanging anywhere in my house. The trappings of rock stardom were never a part of my home. For some time, my younger kids weren’t quite sure what I do.”
• 3 Doors Down – is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its multi-platinum debut album “The Better Life” with three virtual shows. The series kicks off Feb. 5 with the band playing their debut album in its entirety plus 3 three never-before-heard songs from their vault. The February 19 show will feature “Greatest Hits Acoustic”, and March 5 “Greatest Hits Live & Electric”.
• Hedley — The trial of frontman Jacob Hoggard has been pushed back to next year in light of the pandemic. Hoggard, who pleaded not guilty at his preliminary hearing to sexual assault causing bodily harm and sexual interference, was initially set to be tried in Toronto this month. A new trial date was then set for April, but given ongoing court delays, it has now been postponed to Jan. 3, 2022.
• Kelsea Ballerini – Like many, she’s taking part in “Dry January”. So, as her song ‘Hole in the Bottle’ climbs the charts, she put a new twist on it in a new video posted to Facebook. LINK: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=429444001535544
• Big & Rich – singer John Rich lost $10,000 on a bet over the results of the presidential election, but it’s not all bad. He donated ten-grand to the military charity Folds of Honor after losing a bet with music journalist Adam Gold that Donald Trump would be sworn in for a second term on Jan. 20.
• Tim McGraw – is one of thousands of people interviewed by the late Larry King. McGraw shared a clip of one of their conversations with the message “I’ve had several opportunities…to sit and talk with Mr. King. Some of my favorite discussions and interviews. Always welcoming, knowledgeable and generous…He was one of kind.”

Are you in the market for a fake electric chair? How about one of the largest pinball machines in the world? The now-closed Guinness World Records Museum in Niagara Falls, ON is auctioning off its displays. Also up for grabs are the world’s heaviest man display, Wayne Gretzky and Dan Marino memorabilia, a miniature bicycle that was once one of the smallest in the world, the displays for the tallest and the heaviest men in the world, and even the giant wooden chair that sat outside the museum. The items are on the auction block after the landmark attraction permanently closed last September. The museum, located on Niagara’s iconic Clifton Hill, had been a popular attraction since its opening in 1978. The auction opened last Friday, but a live streamed auction will take place on Feb. 12 — an event Ripley is calling a “must-see for any enthusiast.”

GETTING THE JAB DONE:
Conspiracy theorists aside, everybody wants the COVID-19 vaccine. And some in the Los Angeles area are so enthusiastic about it that they’ve been camping out or lining up at vaccination sites before dawn, in hopes of scoring leftover vaccines. This comes after stories surfaced of vaccines being administered to bystanders who aren’t technically eligible yet, if there are excess shots left at the end of the day. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health says that there are no “official standby lines”, and that it “does not advise residents to show up at vaccination sites in the hopes of receiving a leftover vaccine.” On average, there is a less than 10% no-show rate for those with legit appointments. But that means about 30 people per day ARE vaccinated at clinics through these informal lines.
(PLEASE tell me that these people who are lining up all day are wearing masks…!)
(With my luck, I’d stand around all day, then pass out at the first sight of the needle!)

A.I. INTEL:
➢ Researchers at Columbia University say they’ve taught a robot to show empathy for other robots. Study authors say their robot was able to learn and predict the future actions of another robot after watching that machine struggle with an obstacle test several times. The study notes this is a skill that humans develop beginning about age 3, which makes it easy for us to live and work together in the real world. The scientists say that their robots now share the ability to view a peer’s troubles and respond to them. However, this this brings up ethical questions regarding how much of this behavior robots should be permitted to learn. While it could make robots more adaptive and useful, it could also make them capable of manipulating humans. (As if that could ever happen…wait, I just had an ad pop-up for something that I’ve just GOT TO buy!)
➢ From self-driving cars to computers that can win game shows, humans have a natural curiosity and interest in artificial intelligence (AI). But a new study concludes there may be no way to stop the rise of machines. A team from the Center for Humans and Machines says people would not be able to prevent super artificial intelligence from doing whatever it wanted to. Their research found that an AI program with an intelligence far superior to humans could learn on its own without new programming, and if connected to the internet, it would have access to all of humanity’s data and could even take control of other machines around the world. As the study’s co-author put it, “There are already machines that perform certain important tasks independently without programmers fully understanding how they learned it.” (On the plus side, if it had access to the internet, it would probably lose its password!)

A study has found that when sharing a vehicle with people who are outside your “bubble”, in order to avoid coronavirus transmission, it’s best for the windows to be down. The Brown University analysis used complex computer simulations to study how the aerosols that we breathe (some of which escape even properly-worn masks) move about a car’s cabin and how those flows change with various windows up and down. The occupants sat diagonally from one another, a common arrangement in taxis and rideshares. The researchers found that opening the windows opposite of each occupant can create a flow that drastically reduces the collection of aerosols in a car’s cabin.
