Sheet for Brains!
BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Today Ken Ehrlich, the brains behind the Grammy Awards, becomes the latest to be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Stevie Wonder and John Legend are helping to induct the TV and music mogul, just days before he produces the 2015 Grammys. Ehrlich has produced 34 Grammy shows and 7 Emmy shows previously. His star, the 2,541st, is being placed on North Vine Street in front of the Capitol Records Building.

★ Emma Watson is Disney’s new ‘Belle’. The 24-year-old former ‘Harry Potter’ star has announced the big news on her Facebook page. Bill Condon, of “Twilight Saga” fame, will direct an upcoming live action “Beauty & The Beast” movie. Disney’s 1991 animated version of the story won 2 Oscars – ‘Original Score’ and ‘Original Song’ – and has grossed nearly $425 million since its release.

★ And this is no surprise: Melissa Rivers, daughter of late comedienne Joan Rivers, has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the NYC outpatient clinic that treated the entertainer a week before her death last year. Rivers, who was 81, suffered cardiac arrest during an examination of her throat and vocal cords and died a week later at a NYC hospital. The malpractice lawsuit is seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Blink-182 – They’ve been announced as a headliner for the Musink Tattoo & Music Festival March 20th-22nd in LA, but it’s unclear if founding member Tom DeLonge will be joining them. A lot of heated messages have been traded back and forth on social media . DeLonge has written on Instagram: “Are we dysfunctional … yes.”
• Matt White – Here’s a star that may be rising. His track “Love” has already amassed over 1.5 million views online and sold over 300,000 units without any airplay whatsoever. ThinkSay Records has just signed him and the song will now be launched at radio for the first time.
• Phillip Phillips – The “American Idol” Season 11 champ has filed suit against 19 Entertainment, claiming he feels manipulated after being tied in to recording, management, and merchandising deals related to the TV talent show. He is asking a judge to waive his contractual obligations, but 19 Entertainment is vowing to fight him every step of the way.
• Pitbull / Enrique Iglesias – Last night in El Paso TX they kicked off a 2nd leg of dates for their arena tour. Once again J Balvin is the opening act. The tour returns to Las Vegas for Super Bowl weekend and dates are slotted through February 21st in Minneapolis MN,
• Sam Smith – He’s sharing royalties for his Grammy-nominated song “Stay With Me” with Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne (ex-ELO) thanks to its similarity with Petty’s 1989 hit “I Won’t Back Down”, which he co-wrote with Lynne. The claim was actually settled in October, with Petty and Lynne splitting a 25% share of songwriting royalties. Smith claims he’d never even heard Petty’s song.
• U2 – They’re adding a few more dates to the “Innocence + Experience Tour”. A 5th show has been confirmed in Los Angeles (June 3rd), and dates are coming soon for additional concerts in NYC, Chicago, London, and Barcelona.
FROM THE BS POLL VAULT:
A BS breakdown of who we are and what we do …
• 95% of people who are eligible to donate blood … don’t.
• 74% of employees say the worst thing about their jobs is … the boss.
• 40% of us have had at least 1 incident of ‘sleep paralysis’, waking up and being unable to move.
• 38% of people hear voices at some point in their lives.
• 26% of us admit we’ll be betting on the Super Bowl game this Sunday.
• 10% of adults wake up naturally, without any sort of alarm.
FOOD TRUTHS THAT’LL FRIGHTEN YOU:
A few tips on safe and healthy eating, extracted from the book “Food Unwrapped: Lifting The Lid on How Our Food is Really Produced” by Daniel Tapper …
• Bread – Toss out moldy bread, rather than trying to cut the mold out. It can contain strains of a toxic, yellow-green mold called Aspergillus flavus.
• Energy Bars – The truth is they’re just a portable way of delivering a high number of calories in a relatively short time. Helpful if you’re an endurance athlete, but not if you’re a desk jockey.
• Flavorings – These are often concocted in biochemistry labs. For instance castoreum, a common ingredient in raspberry flavoring, is derived from the scent gland of a beaver.
• Frozen Yoghurt – It may be relatively low in saturated fat, but in terms of calories it isn’t far behind ice cream … especially with toppings.
• Granola – Most are classified as ‘high-sugar’, with more than 12.5 g of sugar per 100 g, much of which has been deliberately added to make it taste more palatable.
• Low-Fat Food – While less fat can be a good thing, other ingredients may be added to enhance the ensuing bland flavor. For example, salt and sugar content are often bumped up.
• Orange Juice – Because of high fructose levels, you should drink only 1 glass a day. Heavy fructose consumption can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, obesity, and cardiovascular damage.
• Processed Cheeses – Many can’t legally even be called cheese and are labeled ‘cheese food’, ‘cheese spread’, or ‘cheese product’. Actual real cheese content can be less than 10%.
• Rice – Never reheat rice from takeout orders as many restaurants make their rice in bulk and then reheat it as they need it. Rice should never be reheated twice, due to harmful bacteria.
– “Daily Mail”
BS BUZZWORDS:
New terms leaking into our lingo …
• ‘Flash Nonfiction’ – A very short literary nonfiction piece, typically consisting of a few dozen to a few hundred words.
• ‘Hashtagification’ – The process of turning a word or phrase into a hashtag.
• ‘Narcisstick’ – Pejorative name for a ‘selfie stick’, an extendable arm to which a smartphone is attached for taking selfie photos from a further distance.
• ‘Tech-Free Tourism’ – Traveling without a mobile phone or similar devices, particularly to places that block or cannot access Internet and cellular signals.
EAU DE PRETENTIOUSNESS:
Los Angeles restaurant Patina is offering ‘Water Tasting Classes’ … for $50. That’s the tab for learning about water fundamentals and sampling a selection of different brands of water. We’re thinking the idea is likely a spin-off from all the hoopla over wine. We’re pretty sure that half of all wine-talk and wine-descriptions are total BS. So someone must have thought: Why not hype the heck out of water as well? Water tasting is also offered at another LA spot called Ray’s & Stark Bar, where they have a 45-page menu of water, some of which costs $18 a bottle. (If water is good … it doesn’t taste like anything, right?)

FOR THE RECORD:

The 1st-ever ‘World Marathon Challenge’ was staged in Union Glacier, Antarctica; Punta Arenas, Chile; Miami FL.; Madrid, Spain; Marrakesh, Morocco; Dubai UAE; and Sydney, Australia. The first 3 races were all run within 48 hours, on less than 9 hours of sleep. (Think you’ll participate next year?)
