Monthly Planning Calendar in Today’s Issue!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Designer Tommy Hilfiger wants to revamp the Los Angeles Dodgers uniforms. Hilfiger says he’d like the baseball team’s outfits to be a little more patriotic, so he’d add red to their blue and white stripes, and maybe some stars. While being interviewed he delivered a special message to Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly, stating, “Tell Todd to call me.” (Another change he’d make … instead of players’ names on the back, ‘Tommy Girl’.)

★ Don’t expect to see Oscar-nominated Iranian director Asghar Farhadi at the Oscars February 26th. The filmmaker, whose movie “The Salesman” is up for a ‘Best Foreign Language’ film, says he’s protesting US president Trump’s controversial move to restrict immigration. Trump’s executive order includes a 90-day ban on entry for nationals from 7 predominantly Muslim countries including Iran. A White House source has previously said that Farhadi would have qualified for a ‘waiver’.
– Postmedia Network
★ And singer Céline Dion’s guest appearance on “The Voice” has been a long time coming, but it’s not going down exactly how the show originally wanted it. She’s reportedly been approached several times to be a full-time coach like Adam Levine or Blake Shelton, but since it’s a several months-long commitment Celine declined, given the demanding schedule of her Las Vegas residency. She has now accepted an offer to advise since it only requires 2 days of filming.

TODAY’S SHOW BIZ SKED:
• “Ellen” (syndicated/CTV2) – Big Sean (“I Decided”, out Friday).
• “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (ABC/CityTV) – Tucker Beathard (“Rock On”).
• “Last Call With Carson Daly” (NBC) – Holy Ghost! (“Crime Cutz”).
• “Late Late Show With James Corden” (CBS/CTV) – Sting (“57th & 9th”).
• “Late Show With Stephen Colbert” (CBS/Global) – Japandroids (“Near to the Wild Heart of Life”).
• “Super Bowl Greatest Commercials” (CBS/Global) – Hosts Boomer Esiason & Daniela Ruah ask viewers to vote for ads categorized as ‘bigger is better’ or ‘less is more’. Huh?
• “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (NBC/CTV2) – Veteran reggae band UB40 (“Red Red Wine”).
• “The View” (ABC/CTV) – Keke Palmer (“So Uncool”).

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Black Sabbath – Ozzy Osbourne has now backtracked on his ‘sex addiction’ claim last year as an excuse for cheating on wife Sharon Osbourne. Quote: “I just got caught, didn’t I?”
• Chris Brown – He’d given 7 friends permission to drive his fleet of cars until this incident … one of them has totaled his insanely expensive Lamborghini Aventador (about a half-mill) in a single car accident. Now he’s reportedly asked all his buddies to hand in their keys.
• Ciara – Warner Bros Records has announced the signing of the “Grammy-winning, multi-platinum singer/songwriter/producer”. (Not to mention wife of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.)
• Luke Bryan – He’s launching his “Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day Tour” on May 5th in Nashville TN. Dates run through October 28th in San Bernardino CA.

THIS WEEK’S VIDEO RELEASES:
Coming out on DVD, Netflix, Google Play and/or other video providers …
• “Gimme Danger” ( R-Rated Documentary ): Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch’s latest chronicles the rise and fall of Iggy Pop & The Stooges, one of the greatest rock & roll bands of all-time. The Stooges’ powerful and aggressive style blew a crater in the musical landscape of the late 1960s, and planted the seeds for what would be called ‘punk’ and ‘alt-rock’ in later years.
• “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” ( PG-13 Action Thriller ): The Tom Cruise series continues with a new director, Edward Zwick. For hardcore fans of Lee Child’s ‘Reacher’ novels, this movie is based on his 18th book in the series, with ‘Jack’ facing homicide charges.
• “Masterminds” ( PG-13 Action Crime Comedy ): Zach Galifianakis stars as a bored night guard at an armored car company who helps organize one of the biggest bank heists in history. He makes off with $17 million in cash, but then foolishly hands the money over to a wild group of double-crossers. Co-stars Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, Owen Wilson.
• “Queen of Katwe” ( PG Bio-Drama ): Based on the vibrant true story of a young girl (played by Madina Nalwanga) from the streets of Uganda whose world changes when she is introduced to the game of chess. As a result of the support she receives, she pursues a dream of becoming an international chess champion. Co-stars David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Kabanza.
• Also being released: “Ballers: The Complete 2nd Season” (TV); “Barbie: Video Game Hero” (Kids Animation); “Danny Says” (Documentary); “Pinocchio Signature Collection” (Compilation); and “Tyler Perry’s BOO! A Madea Halloween” (Comedy).

GAMEY SMELLS:
Tokyo, Japan startup Vaqso wants to add smells to virtual reality games. When attached to a head-mounted display (HMD) the Vaqso VR gizmo releases aromas related to the action. It’s not a far stretch for the company’s tech department as it has previously provided promotional services using odors for restaurants. Vaqso VR is about the length and width of a Snickers bar and can be attached to an HMD using a magnet. It syncs up with VR experiences and it’s possible to set different odor cartridges, allowing it to emit multiple odors corresponding with the game being played. (You always wondered what ‘Super Mario’ smells like, right?)

A BRIEF HISTORY OF HALFTIME:
Until 1991, Super Bowl halftime shows were known for being largely dull affairs featuring college marching bands and local artists. But that changed at Super Bowl 25 in Tampa FL, when the Disney-sponsored halftime show starring New Kids On the Block was the first to feature a contemporary pop music artist. Yet the performance remains largely forgotten now as it wasn’t even broadcast live. ABC-TV bumped it until after the game in favor of Gulf War news coverage. NKOTB weren’t even the most memorable musical performance of the night as 1991 was also the year that Whitney Houston delivered a rousing rendition of the pre-game anthem. (This year, we are rumored to be seeing Lady Gaga arrive from a hole in the roof of Houston’s domed stadium.)

HERE’S A FIRST:
For the first time, Canadians are getting to watch those flashy Super Bowl ads from the US. Before this year, Super Bowl commercials were blocked in Canada by a practice called ‘simultaneous substitution’, which masks American ads with content from Canadian advertisers when programs air at the same time on both sides of the border. It’s thought this Super Bowl decision may eventually lead to the end of the substitution practice entirely. That would be bad news for Canadian TV broadcasters. Simultaneous substitution is worth an estimated $250 million a year. (Yeah, but watching the same 3 CTV promos repeated over and over throughout an entire game is pure torture.)
