Another Sheetload of Bull!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Tiffany Haddish landed behind bars in Georgia after being suspected of driving under the influence. The “Like A Boss” star allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel in the early hours of Friday. She was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence and improper stopping on a roadway. Police suspect that Haddish was under the influence of marijuana. She was released around 6:30am after posting $1,700 bond. In a recent interview, the 42-year-old said she had been having a difficult time in her personal life.

★ Lori Loughlin was the victim of a home robbery earlier this month. On Jan. 3, a group of masked thieves broke into the LA-area home owned by Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli. Based on security camera footage, the group of men, who wore all black, broke the couple’s bedroom window to get inside. They swiped the Full House actress’ jewelry box, which contained pieces valued at $1 million.

★ “Scream” has ended the reign of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” at the top of the box office charts, earning $13.3 million on Friday, and putting itself in position to gross $35 million in its extended opening on Martin Luther King weekend. The 5th installment in the “Scream” series saw the return of stars Courtney Cox, Neve Campbell and David Arquette in a film aimed at both the 18-35 crowd and Gen X moviegoers that saw the original “Scream” in 1996. “No Way Home” added $5.1 million on Friday and is expected to reach a total of $704 million by the end of the long weekend.

★ “Jeopardy!” is in no ratings jeopardy at all, 14 months after the passing of longtime and beloved host Alex Trebek. For the week of Dec. 27, the quiz show surpassed “60 Minutes” to become the most-watched non-sports program on TV, according to Nielsen numbers. It’s not only the first time this season that has happened, it’s the first time in at least 3 decades.

SHOOTING THE BULL

MASKING YOUR UNATTRACTIVENESS:
Face coverings have become a very normal accessory over the last 22 months, but did you ever think that they could actually make you more attractive? A new paper out of Cardiff University shows that yes, you’re actually more appealing to others when you’re wearing a face covering. (Sorry about that…). Researchers found that the simple disposable blue masks in particular “increase facial attractiveness more than other face coverings”. In the study, men were perceived to be more physically attractive when wearing a mask than without one. A study where women in masks were rated has yet to be released, but is said to have yielded the same results. One professor at the school said: “the pandemic has changed our psychology in how we perceive the wearers of masks.”
(As far as I’m concerned, paper bags do the same thing!)
(Is this because a mask hides the fact that these days, we’re scowling most of the time?)
(Well, a mask also makes it harder to hear me…so yes, I believe that could make me seem more attractive…)

RECENT RECORDS:
❑ An Ontario martial artist broke her second Guinness World Record by teaming up with a student to perform 178 kicks in 60 seconds. 28-year-old Silvana Shamuon, who previously set a record by kicking footballs off of people’s heads in 2016, teamed up with 15-year-old Hannah Wright to take on the record for most martial arts kicks by a pair in 1 minute (female). Shamuon, a martial arts instructor in Waterloo-Cambridge, alternated kicks with Wright to beat the previous record of 144. (The guy they were kicking took a pretty good beating, too!)
❑ A Czech circus performer broke a Guinness World Record by riding a unicycle measuring 29.8 feet (9.1m) tall. Pavel Valla Bertini was participating in the 14th International Circus Festival in Budapest when he rode around the ring on a unicycle that consisted of 17 wheels stacked vertically. The previous record was 29.1 feet tall. (Where there’s a wheel, there’s a way!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢An boy with autism celebrated his “best birthday ever” even after no-one RSVP’d to his party. Harry, of Chesterfield, England, wanted to go bowling for his 11th birthday party, but struggled to get anyone to come. Frustrated, his mom Hannah took to social media. Soon after, she was inundated with messages asking if they could send Harry a birthday card. She was “overwhelmed” by hundreds of cards, some coming from as far as Dubai, Texas and New Zealand. Harry even got his birthday party after all. People offered to bring their children to his bowling party, and there were enough attendees to fill 2 lanes, more than originally planned.
➢ An album of Australia’s most-endangered birds and their calls has sold its way into the #3 spot on the national pop charts, beating Taylor Swift and ABBA in its flight path. “Songs of Disappearance” is a 24-minute album of endangered birdcalls recorded by Australia wildlife sound recordist, David Stewart. It sold over 2,000 copies, with all proceeds going to conservation of our feathered friends. (No one has heard this much warbling since Paris Hilton’s album!)

HOW THESE FAST-FOOD RESTAURANTS GOT THEIR NAMES:
⇒ Whataburger:  The regional chain started back when there were no patties bigger than 4 inches. Founder Harmon Dobson wanted a 5-inch burger that would make people exclaim “What a burger!” The name stuck.
⇒ Wendy’s:  Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy’s in Columbus OH in 1969, and named it after his daughter Melinda, who was nicknamed Wendy. (You knew this one, right?)
⇒ Subway:  In 1965, Pete’s Super Submarines was opened in Bridgeport CT, by Frank DeLuca and Peter Buck. They renamed it “Pete’s Subway” a few years later. In 1974, DeLuca and Buck wanted to sell franchises, so they simply renamed it Subway.
⇒ Starbucks:  Co-founder Gordon Bowker heard from a friend who worked at an ad agency that words that started with “st” were considered powerful. The two came across a map with a town on it called “Starbo.” Bowker was reminded of the character ‘Starbuck’ from “Moby Dick”, and a coffee giant was born. FUN FACT: They also considered calling the place “Pequod,” after the ship in Moby Dick.
⇒ Domino’s:  Brothers Jim and Tom Monaghan bought a pizza place called DomiNick’s in Ypsilanti, MI, in 1960. When the seller wanted to retain his rights to the name, the brothers had to come up with a new one fast to make a deadline to put their name in the phone book. “Domino’s” was reportedly dreamed up by a delivery driver named Jim Kennedy.

DID YOU KNOW?
‘Baby Shark’, the inescapable earworm beloved by some children and sometimes dreaded by their parents, has hit 10 billion views on YouTube. Not only is it the most-viewed video on the platform, a record it set in November 2020, it’s now the only video to reach 10 billion views. The kids’ song, masterminded by South Korean educational company Pinkfong and performed by singer Hope Segoine, debuted in 2016, but didn’t jam itself into North Americans’ collective consciousness until 2019.

BS CHRONOMETER 01.17.22

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Martin Luther King, Jr. Day”, in the US, honoring the legacy and celebrating the birthday of the iconic civil rights leader. King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination. He was assassinated in 1968.
• “Blue Monday”, the third Monday of January has been awarded this gloomy title due to a combination of post-Christmas blues, cold dark nights and the arrival of unpaid credit card bills. Though we may say we hate Mondays, an Australian study found that the day that scores lowest for most employees’ morale is actually Wednesday. (If you can imagine hating “Hump Day”!)
• “Customer Service Day”, a great day to reflect on the most important asset of any business- customers. A chance for business owners to thank customers and clients for their business, and maybe offer special promotion for VIPs and loyal customers. (Which, of course, might create some extra revenue, too!)
• “Hot-Buttered Rum Day”, celebrating the warm alcoholic beverage flavored with butter, salt, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and cloves. These ingredients form a batter that is then mixed with rich, dark rum.
• “Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day”. Face it, some have already been broken and the rest you were never going to keep anyway, right?  (My “Ditch New Year’s Resolution Day” started before the end of ‘Auld Lang Syne’!)
• “Kid Inventors Day”, to acknowledge the accomplishments of kid inventors and encourage the creativity of future kid inventors. It’s estimated a half-million children and teens invent things each year.  Among them – water skis, earmuffs, and the Popsicle. LINK: http://www.kidinventorsday.com
• “Bootleggers Day”, honoring the makers of ‘hooch’ throughout history. Why today? It’s the birthday of famed bootlegger Al Capone. Also, the US officially went “dry” with the start of prohibition on Jan. 17, 1920. (Also because Templeton Rye Whiskey came up with this excuse for free promotion).
• “Benjamin Franklin Day”, Born on this date in 1706. Ben Franklin was a polymath – an expert on a variety of subjects. In addition to being one of America’s founding fathers, he was a prolific inventor, author, printer, politician, diplomat, musician, and postmaster. He also stopped attending school at the age of 10.
