Can You Believe This Sheet?

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have dug deep into their pockets to the tune of $500,000 to help in what seems like an impossible battle to fight the devastating wildfires in Australia. They both have a very personal stake in all of this. The pair own a home in Australia, where they were both raised, which is not yet affected by the fires, but is currently under threat. So far, 13-million acres have gone up in flames. There are 146 fires in New South Wales alone, and the summer heat has been unforgiving. An estimated half-a-billion wild animals have died in the fires, 1,500 homes have gone up in smoke and 24 people have died.

★ Baby makes four! Ashley Hinshaw is pregnant and expecting her second child with her husband, “That 70s Show” star Topher Grace. The “True Blood” actress says she’s “nervous” and “excited” to have two children. She jokingly added that she’s most looking forward to “not being pregnant anymore.” Grace, meanwhile, joked that he can’t wait to have even “less sleep” as the dad of two little ones.

★ Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein will finally answer for rape allegations against him starting this week. More than two years after the first of more than 80 sexual assault or sexual abuse allegations against Weinstein kickstarted the #MeToo movement, the celebrity-laced case will take center stage in the Big Apple when jury selection begins today in Manhattan Supreme Court.

★ Eva Mendes has just given her Instagram followers a lesson in how to respond to a rude comment with grace and class. The actress, who also has her own fashion line, shared a video of herself showing off a new patterned dress. While Mendes’ post was met with plenty of praise, one of her followers was not a fan, and let her opinion be known, writing: “Don’t like these designs, you need a better designer, you too pretty for these ugly patterns.” Mendes issued a response that was as classy as it was gracious. She wrote: “I’m so sorry you don’t like this one. It happens to be my favourite piece of my new collection. But I’m sure there’s other stuff you may like. If not @katehudson and @gabunion design some great things. So there may be something for you there.”

BS MUSIC NOTES:

• Adele – has sparked concern over her apparent weight loss after photos surfaced of her Anguilla vacation. Though she appeared to be having fun on the beach, the Twitter-verse was quick to start making judgments about her body. She was seen with Harry Styles and James Corden.
• One Direction — Liam Payne has teased that there is a documentary about the group in the works. He told a reporter in Dubai that the boy band once filmed a show there “and it’ll be part of a documentary around an anniversary.”
• R.E.M. – former singer Michael Stipe marked his 60th birthday with the release of the new song ‘Drive To The Ocean’, on his website on Saturday. Proceeds go to Pathway to Paris, a charity dedicated to bringing together artists, musicians and activists to fight climate change.
• Beastie Boys — are teaming up with Spike Jonze on a new photo book, out March 17. “Beastie Boys” has 256 pages and features over 200 of the director’s personal photos of the group. They’ve worked with Jonze on numerous projects in the past, including album covers and videos.
• Nirvana – The group’s surviving members reunited on Saturday night at Los Angeles’s Hollywood Palladium. The most memorable moment of their five-song set at the 13th annual Heaven gala was when Dave Grohl’s 13-year-old daughter, Violet, emerged onstage to sing ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ with the band.
• Linkin Park – Chester Bennington’s widow wants to set the record straight: contrary to some reports, she did not get remarried on New Year’s Eve, the anniversary of the date she tied the knot with the Linkin Park singer in 2005. Talinda Bennington tweeted that she actually walked down the aisle on January 4, four months after she announced her engagement to firefighter Michael Fredman. The ceremony took place in Hawaii.
• Thomas Rhett and Kelsea Ballerini – are rumored to be in line to host this year’s CMA Awards after Carrie Underwood announced that she is stepping down after 12 years. It is reported that Rhett and Ballerini, who have hosted CMA Fest together for several years, have been “quietly primed for the job”.
• Willie Nelson — A woman in Virginia has created a 15-foot-tall replica of him … made of hay. While she previously made characters from The Wizard of Oz, the Nelson replica— dubbed “Will-Hay Nelson” — is among her most notable. Quote: “I…had to make a nose out of chicken wire because Willie has a very prominent nose and I wanted to get that right.”

WEIGHT A MINUTE:
Well, this is awkward…In the wake of the US military’s airstrike near the Baghdad Airport on Thursday that killed Iraqi Gen. Qassem Soleimani, several hashtags began trending as a result, including #WWIII and #WorldWarThree. Meantime, Weight Watchers, which rebranded to simply “WW” in 2018, launched their new social media campaign the same day – “#ThisIsMyWW”. The ill-timed campaign was intended for users of the weight loss program to share their food and exercise plans for the new year. But with several versions of “World War III” hashtags trending at the same time, the company has inadvertently come under fire from some users of the social networking site. Others saw the humor in it, with one user tweeting: “Thank you Weight Watchers for sponsoring WWIII. #thisismyWorldWar.”
(Weight Watchers – this time it’s about more than the ‘battle of the bulge’!)

CELL SAFETY:
When it comes to the potential dangers of smartphone use, distracted driving certainly comes to mind. And blue light can mess with your body clock. Some say the radiation emitted by a cell phone is a possible health hazard. To that list you can now add facial cuts, bruises and fractures. That’s according to a study that found a spike in U.S. emergency room treatment for these mostly minor injuries. The research was led by a facial plastic surgeon who analyzed 20 years of emergency room data and found an increase in cellphone injuries around 2006, about the time that the first smartphones were introduced, and the numbers have been going up ever since. Dr. Boris Paskhover of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School says one of his patients broke her nose when she dropped her phone on her face. He says many other injuries were caused by distracted use including texting while walking, and tripping, resulting in a face-down landing on the sidewalk.
(Wow! Call-forwarding!)
(And don’t even get me started on “selfie injuries”!)
(Plus all those injuries sustained by husbands whose wives snooped through their phone!)

ABSTINENCE MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER:
It’s January 7th. How’s “Dry January” going? While it would seem there are many benefits to avoiding alcohol for a full month, which could include normalizing your blood sugar, and improved sleep patterns…not to mention a higher bank balance, some medical professionals warn that 31 days of abstinence can’t reverse 11 months of overindulging…and that some people end up “going harder” on the booze once February arrives. One psychiatrist says that he knows of compulsive drinkers who have stopped for several Januarys over the years, but just count the days until February. He says that if you truly want to be a controlled drinker, you need to be off alcohol for three months.
(Three months! There’s no way I’m having a dry St. Patrick’s Day!)
(My Dry January is going great. Of course, I’m still having a glass of wine every day…for health reasons!)
(Well, I know my January started OFF pretty dry!)

BS POLL VAULT:
• 27% of us say they’ve never set foot in their neighbor’s house.
• 23% of adults say they play video games regularly while on the clock at work.
• 90% of adults say they’ve shown up at work sick.
• 25% of adults say they are relieved when friends cancel their plans.
• 62% of adults say they’d be mortified if their friends saw their high school yearbook photo.
• 70% of us say our significant other is guilty of selective hearing.

DID YOU KNOW?

Fresh snow absorbs sound, lowering ambient noise over a landscape because the trapped air between snowflakes attenuates vibration. That’s why it gets so quiet when it snows. (Except when the plow comes by and buries the end of my driveway…again!)
