New terms leaking into the lingo …
• ‘Girlfriend Getaway’ – Adult version of a sleepover in which grown women fly to a destination, eat junk food, shop … and complain about men. There are now oodles of websites offering travel packages in the genre.
• ‘Nail House’ – A house that ‘sticks out like a nail’ because the owner refuses to sell out when newer and usually bigger buildings are developed in the neighborhood surrounding it. The term has come to the forefront again thanks to the Disney movie “Up”.
• ‘VB6′ (‘Vegan Before 6′) – An increasingly popular veggie-heavy diet whereby the dieter eats a vegan diet before 6 pm, then whatever they want afterward. Proponents say it can do wonders for both the body … and the planet.

VIRTUAL CHILD:
Pregnant women are being given the chance to hold life-size models of their unborn babies thanks to an invention that converts data from ultrasound & MRI scans. Brazilian designer Jorge Lopes came up with the idea, using 3-D printing technology to create plaster models. His invention has since attracted the attention of medical experts and is being tested at a clinic in Rio de Janeiro, where expectant mothers now get the chance to see and hold full-scale replicas of their babies. (Far fewer bodily fluids to deal with.)

WORLDWIDE BULL ROAR:
• This guy refused to break the law after he’d broken the law! In Guildford UK a 34-year-old getaway driver in a stolen Alfa Romeo refused to speed after his gang robbed a jewelry store of $100,000-worth of gems. In fact, the wheel-man took his foot off the gas every time they entered a speed-restricted area. Within a half-hour, the 3-man gang was arrested by pursuing cops. They’ve since been sentenced to prison for a total of 20 years.

• These people sure know how to burst your balloon! An overeager crowd in the Hungarian capital has thwarted discount airline Wizz Air’s attempt to release 1,000 balloons for its 5th anniversary celebration. Onlookers spied coupons worth 10,000 forints (about $50) attached to each balloon and a free-for-all of popping and grabbing commenced before the balloons could be officially released from a giant net in the center of Budapest.

• Call them straphangers in the sky! A Chinese airline wants to sell cut-rate, standing-room-only tickets. Spring Airlines’ president says he’s consulted with Airbus, the company that built most of its planes, and has been assured that standees would be safe. If the plan goes forward, flying ‘stand-by’ on this airline will mean … exactly that.

Fireworks can be a real hazard for children. Eye injuries are the most common mishap after burns. Pediatrician Dr Jeffrey Gruen offers this advice: in case of eye injury, do not let the child rub the eye. Instead, place a protective patch over it. Do not give aspirin or ibuprofen because both can thin the blood. Go immediately to an emergency room, even if there is no pain after a blunt impact injury. Serious eye injuries from blunt impact can occur days later. (Alarmists remind you that this would never have happened if your kid had been wearing a helmet.)
