BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez put on a united front to support his daughter Violet at her graduation ceremony on Thursday, amid talk of tension in their relationship. The 2 chatted animatedly at the Los Angeles school’s commencement, which was also attended by Affleck’s ex-wife (and Violet’s mom) Jennifer Garner, and the exes’ other 2 kids, as well as Max and Emme, the twins Lopez shares with Marc Anthony. More J-Lo news: Friday, she announced she is “completely heartsick and devastated” to cancel her summer tour. (***See “Music Notes”, below).

★ Pat Sajak is gearing up for his final week on “Wheel of Fortune” following a 43-year run as host. And the 77-year-old is giving fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the game show set. In a video posted to Instagram ahead of his last episode, set to air this Friday, he takes viewers “behind the puzzle board.”, where, as he put it, “It looks like an election headquarters back here, with all these screens and everything.” In the clip, filmed by his daughter, Maggie, he cheekily adds: “We can’t show a lot, because there’s certain things that are highly classified!” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/y7ey2jwj

★ It was another bummer of a weekend at the summer box office, where overall domestic revenue looks to be down 67% from a year ago, as Hollywood and theater owners continue to grapple with a lack of big event pics. According to the latest projections, “The Garfield Movie” is expected to easily purr past “Furiosa” with an estimated $13 million weekend total, about 1.5 million more than the “Mad Max” prequel. “If” is expected to come third, with about $11 million.

★ Mandy Moore is entering her ‘Rebecca Pearson’ era. The former “This Is Us” star announced on Instagram that she’s pregnant with her third child, and, yup, she used the opportunity to reference her Emmy-winning show. She wrote: “Sometimes life imitates art. The third in our own Big Three coming soon. Can’t wait for these boys to have a baby sister.” This will be her 3rd child with husband Taylor Goldsmith. And, that means Moore will soon have the same gender combination and age order as her 3 children on This Is Us.

★ Netflix’s move to live sports has hit a speed bump. The scheduled July 20 fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul has been postponed. Tyson is recovering after becoming ill with an ulcer flare-up last week while aboard a plane. Most Valuable Promotions said in a statement: “During a follow up consultation…with medical professionals…the recommendation is for Mike Tyson to do minimal to light training over the next few weeks and then return to full training with no limitations.” Tyson promised in a statement of his own; “My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s and I will be back to my full training schedule soon.” The match will be rescheduled for later this year.

Thank u for having us @sabrinacarpenter.” Her response: “waitttttt… might need to sprint to the club (it’s 9am).” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/24zvr33f
• Jennifer Lopez — has canceled her 2024 North American tour, to take “time off to be with her children, family and close friends”, according to a statement. It was be her first in 5 years, to support her new album “This Is Me… Now”, and its companion film. This comes amid reports of disappointing album and ticket sales, and apparent marital issues with husband Ben Affleck.
• The Pretty Reckless – Singer Taylor Momsen was apparently bitten by a bat onstage in Spain while singing the song (wait for it…) ‘Witches Burn’. She posted video of the incident, and wrote: “He was cute, but yes he bit me…so rabies shots for the next two weeks.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2p4tr3t9
• Eminem — dropped his new single ‘Houdini’ on Friday, along with a superhero-themed music video featuring his 3 kids and a hilarious cameo from Pete Davidson. • Morgan Wallen – His “This Bar & Tennessee Kitchen” finally opened on Saturday. The bar, restaurant and live music hall in Nashville’s Lower Broadway district is located near the front entrance of Ryman Auditorium. The opening was delayed by about a week, perhaps due to the fact that the venue’s outdoor sign design was rejected by Nashville Council in May.
• Alan Jackson – has announced his farewell tour, “Last Call: One More for the Road,” promising to “give [fans] the best show I can.” He announced his diagnosis of a neurological condition called Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease in 2021. The tour, which will hit 10 US cities, begins Aug. 2 in Boston.
SHOOTING THE BULL
WELLBEING AND BEING WELL:
❑ A good night’s sleep can be the cure for all sorts of ailments. And new research says it may also be the best medicine for loneliness. The National Sleep Foundation in Washington, DC found that getting a good night’s rest helps people feel more connected to others. Specifically, the researchers found that better sleep health is linked to lower levels of emotional, social, and total loneliness. The effects were seen across adults of all ages. The US Surgeon General declared loneliness a public health crisis in 2023, comparing the health risks one could face from feeling lonely to the effects of smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. (It’s a good thing, then, that if you’re lonely, you probably have no one to bum smokes off of!)
❑ If you’re looking for a lift, the answer might be YouTube. Watching videos like those found on YouTube may make people happier than small talk with casual acquaintances or co-workers, according to University of Essex research. Using data from 3 studies involving 1,080 people in the UK and US, researchers found that 52% of respondents felt they had a strong parasocial relationship, and 36% said they felt close to a YouTuber. Parasocial relationships are described as having a bond with someone you’ve never met, often an influencer or a celebrity. The study’s author did point out, however, that romantic relationships or close friends are still seen as the most effective way to fulfill emotional needs. (Up until now, whenever I need a lift, I’ve used Uber!)

IS THIS GETTY – OR SPARSE?
As you know, trying to keep up with today’s slang can be difficult. Terms like “rizz”, “bussin,” and “do it for the plot” could sound like a bunch of made-up words to someone outside a certain demographic. So, in an effort at pranking his students, a teacher made up a bunch of slang words and shared them with his Gen Z students – and now, some of them are catching on. Sam Salem, a millennial high school teacher, started a series on his Instagram page called “Gaslighting my students with made up slang words.” So far, he has posted 7 videos, introducing invented words like “pebbles,” “parked,” and “Getty.” His first vid got over 765,000 likes, 9,000 comments, and 383,000 shares. And although it began as a joke, some of his “new vernacular” is becoming popular outside the Los Angeles schools where he teaches. Even NBA star Bradley Beal used “pebbles” — which means “easy” — during a press conference. Here’s the full list of Salem’s fake slang – coming to a Gen Z mouth near you soon…
• Comma: Tell me more, I need more details
• Dairy: Basic
• Clip/Clipped: Positive thing/connotation
• Mute: Lowkey or ‘in the low’
• Feta: Negative connotation, falls apart easily
• Parked: Boring, done, over
• Pebbles: Easy
• Terk: Bestie/best friends
• Sparse: Not cool
• Getty: Work of art/beautiful
• Oozing: Doing too much
• Swirled: Mixed up/hot and cold
• Nabs: Not AnyBody’s Somebody
• Remy: It shouldn’t go together, but it does
• Rug: You don’t believe it. Derived from the word struggling
• Costco: Built differently or has everything
• Jar: If someone is saying something embarrassing or a secret
• Scroll: If someone is talking about something you are uninterested in or don’t want to talk about
• Fluttered: When someone is so excited about something constantly and it makes you annoyed and hate that thing
• iPad: Someone who is socially awkward

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ A married couple have given birth to what’s being called a “miracle baby” – after suffering 6 heartbreaking miscarriages. Charlie and Lynette Bathgate had spent 10 years trying to bring a child into the world without success. They had almost given up on their dream of becoming parents when a doctor urged 42-year-old Lynette to try a medicine normally taken before to IVF treatment. She said she was “filled with anxiety” when she became pregnant for the 7th time – but their daughter arrived by emergency C- section, weighing in at a robust 8lb, 5oz (3.77kg). Of the moment when she first held her baby girl, Lynette said: “It was the most fantastic feeling in the world.” The baby was named, appropriately, Faith.
➢ A 5-year-old boy born with one hand has become the youngest ever person to be fitted with a bionic arm. Jordan Marotta was left in a state of “pure joy” when he received his Iron Man-themed ‘Hero Arm’ prosthetic last month. Heartwarming footage shows how, just hours later, he was able to whizz around on his scooter while holding the handlebars with the arm’s life-like grip. His mother Ashley had approached Open Bionics – which makes the prosthetic – when Jordan started questioning why his hand had not “grown back”. She was told he was likely too young to receive one of their products, but let Jordan try out an arm, just in case. They later agreed to fit him with the Hero Arm at their offices in New York City, 2 years earlier than most youngsters. Of his new mechanical limb, Jordan says it is “really fun and it’s cool.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/p6rv6pb8

STARS WHO WERE ALMOST CAST IN HUGE ROLES:
It seems like certain actors were simply destined to play certain roles. But these stars came oh-so-close to signing on for famous films…
✗ Tom Selleck in Indiana Jones: Initially, Selleck was eyed to play the fedora-wearing hero, and had even completed a screen test for the part. Ultimately, he was unable to commit due to his work on “Magnum P.I.”. George Lucas eventually allowed his “Star Wars” colleague Harrison Ford to audition for the part…and the rest is history.
✗ Christina Applegate in Legally Blonde: Reese Witherspoon is renowned for playing socialite ‘Elle Woods’, but Applegate had turned down the role because she felt it was too similar to her role in TV’s “Married … With Children”.
✗ Harry Styles in The Little Mermaid: The One Direction singer decided against playing ‘Prince Eric’ in the 2023 remake because he wanted to work on “darker” projects. Jonah Hauer-King was later cast in the role to star alongside Halle Bailey.
✗ Halle Berry in Speed: She was almost cast in the 1994 action thriller that eventually starred Sandra Bullock alongside Keanu Reeves – about a bus that will explode if it drops below 50mph. But as she later put it: “I stupidly said no. But in my defence, when I read the script, the bus didn’t leave the parking lot.”
✗ Michelle Pfeiffer in The Silence of the Lambs: After working with director Jonathan Demme on 1988’s “Married to the Mob”, Pfeiffer was offered the role of ‘Clarice Starling’, but decided the movie was too “evil” for her. The part went to Jodie Foster…and so did the ‘Best Actress’ Oscar.
✗ John Krasinski in Captain America: The First Avenger: Before Chris Evans landed the part, Krasinski auditioned to play the star-spangled hero. He ultimately decided his physique wouldn’t look very good next to superhero counterpart Chris Hemsworth, who played ‘Thor’.
✗ Britney Spears in The Notebook: After being chosen ahead of Scarlett Johansson, Claire Danes and Jessica Biel, Spears and Rachel McAdams were the final 2 in contention for the ‘Allie Hamilton’ role. Despite a “phenomenal” audition, Britney didn’t land it, but she was OK with that, because it gave her more time to work on her “In the Zone” album.
✗ Leonardo DiCaprio in Boogie Nights: Before Mark Wahlberg landed his break-out role as ‘Dirk Diggler’, the part was offered to Leo. But he turned it down because a “Titanic” opportunity presented itself, courtesy of James Cameron. Still, he later reflected: “Boogie Nights is a movie I loved and I wish I would’ve done.” (This one actually might have worked!)
✗ Madonna in The Matrix: She was offered the chance appear in the sci-fi classic alongside Keanu Reeves, but rejected the role, presumably the part of ‘Trinity’ taken by Carrie-Anne Moss. Madonna quote: “Can you believe that? That’s, like, one of the best movies ever made.”
✗ Jake Gyllenhaal in Spider-Man 2: He nearly replaced Tobey Maguire as the web-slinger, after the latter suffered a back injury and was advised not to do the project. However, Maguire made a quick recovery and was able to do it. But Gyllenhaal isn’t disappointed. Quote: “The truth of the matter is, in the end, [Tobey Maguire is] Spider-Man.”

DID YOU KNOW?
Today is “National Egg Day”, and an egg a day just might keep heart disease away, according to research. Eggs are chock-full of essential nutrients. Despite that, they also contain a lot of cholesterol. And scientists have debated for decades whether eggs are more beneficial or harmful to heart health. In an attempt at answering that question, a 2018 study of 500,000 adults carried out by researchers at the University of Peking in China concluded that daily egg consumption (roughly one per day) results in lower heart disease and stroke risk. (How egg-citing is that?)

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Thank God It’s Monday”, all about seeing Monday as a positive day, rather than a negative one. While Mondays can be a struggle for a lot of people, maybe we can use this occasion to try and see this day from a different perspective. (Give it a try. After all, it’s a shame to dread the day of the week that lasts the longest!)
• “Leave the Office Early Day”, an incentive for many, who often work more than 40 hours each week. (And, of course, today will be the one day that the boss DOESN’T leave early!)
• “Repeat Day” (Again??!!??), an annual opportunity to do things over again … just because you want to. That means it’s a good excuse to ‘double-snack’, and give a re-do to other fun activities. (By the way, it’s “Repeat Day” …)
• On the other hand, it’s also “National Itch Day”. Have you ever had the ‘itch’ to just do something different? Today is the day to do that. Or maybe they mean this more literally. Scratch away, my itchy friend!!
• “Chocolate Macaroon Day”. With a rich creamy chocolate filling and a light coating, they’re the perfect combination of textures. Most recipes call for egg whites (usually whipped to stiff peaks), with ground or powdered seeds, generally almonds or nuts. Alternatively, coconuts can be used.
• “Egg Day”. Eggs are a terrific source of protein and vitamin D, which makes them one of the healthiest breakfast foods. Did you know that there are more than 100 ways to cook an egg? (Have an egg-cellent Egg Day!) [***See “Did You Know?”, above***]
