BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Natalie Portman says that “Thor: Love and Thunder” (opening today) has one of the most visually stunning scenes she’s ever seen on film — and it was filmed in a random Best Buy parking lot. She isn’t revealing which scene in the film it is, but says that now, she can’t watch the movie without being reminded of Best Buy. She told “EW” “It’s so wild to be on this size of movie, and we were literally in a parking lot with a blue screen, doing this really dramatic thing. It looks so stunning on film.” Thor: Love and Thunder finds Portman reprising her role of ‘Jane Foster’ after sitting out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for “Thor: Ragnarok.”

★ Amber Heard’s lawyers have claimed Johnny Depp is “not entitled” to the $10 million damages he was awarded in his defamation case over her 2018 op-ed piece in the Washington Post. Attorneys representing the “Aquaman” actress filed a motion contesting the verdict in Depp’s favor and the damages awarded to him – claiming his career was “ruined” before the publication of Heard’s piece in December 2018 in which she described herself as a victim of domestic violence but didn’t name her famous ex. The motion says “there is no evidence of damage to Mr. Depp’s reputation caused by Mrs. Heard’s Op-Ed”, and claim the damage to Depp’s reputation came when Heard filed for a domestic violence temporary restraining order against him in May 2016, in the aftermath of their split.

★ A documentary about the life and career of ‘Captain Kirk’, William Shatner, is in the works. Alexandre O. Philippe is directing the untitled documentary film that’s being billed as the definitive movie about the 91-year-old “Star Trek” and “Boston Legal” icon, and the producers plan to debut footage from the film at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. Shatner will speak on a panel moderated by “Clerks” director Kevin Smith. The doc is being produced by Legion M, an entertainment company with 35,000 shareholders that allows fans to invest directly in a project. Fans can do that with the Shatner documentary, and own a physical share in any potential profits the documentary earns.

★ Millie Bobby Brown has agreed to marry one of her “Stranger Things” co-stars if they’re both single at 40. She only just turned 18 a few months back, plus she’s in a relationship with Jake Bongiovi, son of rocker Jon Bon Jovi, but in a recent interview, Brown – who plays ‘Eleven’ in the hit Netflix series – appeared alongside 17-year-old Noah Schnapp – aka ‘Will Byers’ – and they opened up about their marriage pact. She told MTV News: “We said if we’re not married by 40, we’ll get married together because we’d be good roomies.” In addition to the requirement that both are single in 20+ years, Brown pointed out a few other important conditions: “Completely platonically, we would still be really good roomies. No kids, though, because I could not deal with a child of yours…and separate bedrooms, for sure – my God, you’re so messy.” (It’s always good to have a contingency plan…)

SAMPLING THE STAMPEDE:
The 109th Calgary Stampede opens today. While some people definitely go for the rodeo, some are just there for the food. Here’s a sampling of this year’s menu:
➠ Pop Rocks Popcorn Chicken: Yup. The candy you enjoyed (hearing) as a kid…added to chicken. Taste the explosion!
➠ Crazy Tongue Pizza: Tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, slow braised AAA Alberta cow tongue, natural pineapple, caramelized onions, and a Baja chipotle drizzle. (“Hey Mom! We found something worse than Hawaiian pizza!”)
➠ Cajun Fried Poutine:  Golden curds, lightly breaded & fried, then placed on a bed of hot Cajun curly fries, all under a blanket of fresh gravy.
➠ Deep Fried Oreo Mini Donuts:  Oreo cookies deep fried inside signature mini donuts, cooked to perfection, topped with powdered sugar and chocolate sauce.
➠ Flamin’ Cheeto’s Fries:  Fresh cut French fries taken to the next level….by adding jalapeno cheese sauce topped off with crunchy Flamin’ Cheeto’s. (Because, why not?)
➠ Korean Squid Ink Corn Dog:  It’s half mozzarella, half hot dog, dipped in a black batter, with one end cut to resemble tentacles. (Thank goodness…)
And to wash it down…
➠ Bad Breath Lemonade:  Ice-cold lemonade with a smooth, delicious garlic & caramelized onion finish. (Try one of each, then go try to ride a bull for 8 seconds!)

GOOD FOR WHAT ‘ALES’ YOU:
A “ground-breaking” new hangover pill went on sale this week in the UK. Selling for just £1 each (US$1.19), it promises to “rapidly break down alcohol” so you can avoid a headache the morning after the night before. Myrkl is a pill that the user takes before drinking that is billed as “the first product in history to break down alcohol effectively”. The food supplement, which is 100% natural and vegan, was invented in 1990, and has supposedly been “perfected over 30 years of research and design”. Users are instructed to take 2 pills before drinking – either an hour before or any time up to 12 hours before, and, according to the manufacturer, up to 70% of alcohol consumed is then broken down after just 60 minutes, and the pill also claims to support immunity and boost energy levels with B12.
(But it’s always that last drink that gets you, anyway!)
(Are we going to start calling this thing the “afternoon-before” pill, or is that bad?)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A Japanese man who spent a whole year fishing small stones out of the soles of his sneakers may have inspired a new hobby. Neruno Daisuki, an illustrator and manga artist, recently got his 15 minutes of fame on Twitter after showing off the collection of pebbles and glass fragments he picked out of the soles of his shoes over the last year. You know how those small stones get stuck in the grooves of your shoes all the time — but who would ever think of collecting them? Well, this guy did, and after a year of painstaking work, Daisuki showed off his collection of 179 pebbles, 32 glass fragments, and 1 nut. (TWO “nuts”, actually!)
➢The city of Kalamazoo, Michigan is considering decreasing the penalties for public urination, littering and other violations, by changing them from misdemeanors to civil infractions. A misdemeanor can include a fine and jail time. A civil infraction is basically a ticket that comes with a fine. The Kalamazoo City Commission has accepted the recommendation from the city attorney’s office to change 6 misdemeanors to civil infractions, including littering and public urination, because, as Attorney Clyde Robinson put it, “It’s kind of crude, but we are a college town, and there’s a lot of times drinking, and people can’t seem to find a restroom.” (Good thing it’s a college town, because once this hits the media, it’ll never be a tourist town!)

DID YOU KNOW?
There’s a hotel room in Ibiza where guests can stay the night for free – but there’s a huge catch. The Zero Suite at Paradiso Art Hotel is, by its own admission, “not suitable for wallflowers”, because it is a room closed off by see-through walls. And the room is located in the hotel’s lobby, meaning you’d probably experience a fair bit of traffic going by as you try to drift off. The Paradiso website says: “A glass-walled room in the middle of Paradiso Art Hotel lobby where you can sleep one night for free…Also available for artistic performances, radio broadcasts, DJ sets… the possibilities are endless as long as you like being the center of attention.” LINK: https://www.instagram.com/p/CfT3BYzMEe8/

BS CHRONOMETER 07.08.22

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Calgary Stampede”, the annual rodeo & 10-day festival through July 17th in Calgary, Alberta. “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”, attracts over 1 million visitors per year and features one of the world’s largest rodeos, a parade, midway, stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuckwagon racing and First Nations exhibitions (and usually the Prime Minister flipping pancakes while wearing chaps…) Some of the more than 100 music acts on hand include Chris Lane, Tenille Townes, Alessia Cara, Steve Earle…and Kevin Costner? LINK:  https://www.calgarystampede.com/stampede/music
• “Be a Kid Again Day”, when we’re encouraged to participate in activities we enjoyed as a child and to introduce them to a kid we know. (“OK, Zachary, this is known as ‘playing outdoors’ …”) [See ‘BS Phone Starter’, below***]
• “Ice Cream Sundae Day”, a day to create your own sundae from all your favorite toppings. The first sundae was purportedly created on this date in 1881 by Edward Berner in Two Rivers WI. (FUN FACT: Though there are many supposed sundae origin stories, most of them agree that the sundae’s original spelling was “Sunday”, but it was changed to avoid religious connotation.)
• “National Milk Chocolate with Almonds Day”, celebrating what happens when these 2 fantastic tastes come together into a mind-bendingly delectable whole. Today, have some brownies, cupcakes, or muffins made with milk chocolate and almonds. Or just eat some almonds covered with milk chocolate. (Not if I get to them first!)
• “Math 2.0 Day”, celebrating math and technology, specifically the intersection between the 2. Today, mathematicians, educators, innovators, and policymakers come together to raise awareness about math literacy and education. (Figures…)
• “SCUD (Savor the Comic, Unplug the Drama) Day”, to remind people of the benefits of spending more time in the ‘Comic Zone’ and less in the ‘Drama Zone’. Today, step back, relax and laugh, and leave the drama alone. (I particularly enjoy those who claim they hate drama, and feel the need to dramatically complain about it…)
• “World Kebab Day”, The first kebabs may have been cooked when soldiers grilled meat of recently-killed animals on their swords. Innumerable varieties of kebabs make categorizing them difficult, but what they have in common is they are cooked meat dishes with origins in the Middle East. Today, share and eat kebabs, whether at a restaurant on at home.

SATURDAY-
• “Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Omelet Day”, from the saying: “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” meaning “Don’t put all your faith (or time, or money, etc.) into one thing”, because that one thing could fail, and you’ll be left starting from scratch.
• “Sugar Cookie Day”, honoring the cookie that is so delicious, yet so simple. All you need is sugar, flour, butter, eggs, vanilla, and baking powder (and insulin…)
• “Call of the Horizon Day”, if the idea of following your dreams over the horizon has ever called you, take the time to follow today! (Keep the dream alive – hit ‘snooze’!)
• “No Bra Day”, it’s fairly self-explanatory, but if wearing a bra on this day is absolutely necessary, you can also show your ‘support’ by wearing something purple (or lack of support?)
• “Fashion Day”, On this day, people sport their best fashionable looks, and post pictures on social media. (I heard somewhere that not wearing a bra is fashionable…at least today!)

SUNDAY-
• “Don’t Step on a Bee Day”, a warning that now is the time when going barefoot can mean getting stung by a bee. And with declining populations of the crop-pollinating critters, EVERY day should be Don’t Step on a Bee Day. (And if your porch is near a hive…Don’t ‘be’ on a ‘step’!)
• “Piña Colada Day”, saluting the refreshing tropical cocktail that originated in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The name means ‘strained pineapple’ in Spanish. The traditional recipe calls for pineapple juice, light rum, and coconut cream poured over crushed ice. Don’t forget the mini umbrella!
• “Teddy Bears Picnic Day”, an annual excuse to have a picnic with your stuffed animals. (Why? ‘Because today’s the day the Teddy Bears have their pic–nic!’) ‘Teddy Bears’ Picnic’ is a song consisting of a 1907 melody by US composer John Walter Bratton with lyrics added in 1932 by Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy.
• “Kitten Day”, a day to celebrate the incredible magic of kittens and encourage adoption. (Betcha can’t adopt just one!)
• And for those so inclined, today is also “Pick Blueberries Day”, and “Barn Day”.
