BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Princess Anne has been hospitalized after an “incident” at her country home in England. Buckingham Palace said in a statement that she “sustained minor injuries and concussion” and remains in hospital “as a precautionary measure” and “is expected to make a full and swift recovery.” Reports say that Princess Anne, who is 73, was treated by emergency services before being taken to a hospital in Bristol, and her injuries are consistent with a potential impact from a horse’s head or legs. She is a skilled horsewoman, and competed in the equestrian event at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

★ Will Smith has an awards show gig lined up — but it’s definitely not at the Oscars. The rapper and actor is set to perform a new song during the 2024 BET Awards. In making the announcement, the network said: “From his start as a rapper to the Fresh Prince to being a box office king as one of the Bad Boys, Will Smith is truly a global icon, and we are honored to welcome him back to grace the BET Awards stage”. The BET Awards will air live on Sunday, and will be hosted once again by Taraji P. Henson.

★ Sarah Becker, best known for appearing in MTV’s “The Real World”, has died. She was 52. Becker appeared in the 5th season of the reality series set in Miami. TMZ reports she died by suicide last week at her home in Illinois. One friend posted on Facebook: “Sarah Becker was made of pure sunshine… Full of energy and positivity, you couldn’t help but feel her warmth standing in her presence.”

★ Jodie Foster claims she is “not naturally an actor” and that the experience of a stalker coming to see her on stage, then shooting President Reagan to get her attention, is the reason she stopped performing live at age 18. In 1981, John Hinckley Jr. made the assassination attempt while Foster was a college student. In a conversation with Interview Magazine, she said: “It was a traumatic moment, and I’ve never admitted that maybe that has something to do with how I never wanted to do a play again.” She said the fact that Hinkley shot the president “in order to impress” her, and had written her letters, resulted in her being assigned bodyguards and being taken to a safe house.

★ Jennifer Lawrence has landed her next lead movie role. The “Hunger Games” star is set to star in the murder-mystery “The Wives”. She’ll also serve as a producer on the Apple TV+ project, which is said to be inspired by the “Real Housewives” franchise. Plot details are under wraps, though Michael Breslin and Patrick Foley, who wrote “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical”, will pen the script. No release date has been announced.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Ariana Grande – Monica, who had a hit collab with Brandy on 1998’s ‘The Boy is Mine’, says that Grande’s new remix of her song featuring the original artists has healed some old wounds between them. Quote: “The process of the new collaboration did a lot of closing the gaps. When you properly communicate…you can find…the resolutions and solutions to problems.”
• Ed Sheeran – Celebrated 10 years of his sophomore album “Multiply” by posting 10 photos from that era on Instagram. One is “on my 24th birthday dressed up as a sumo wrestler on the Eastern European leg of the tour”. There’s also video him practicing the choreography for the ‘Thinking Out Loud’ video, and footage of him and Pharrell on set of the ‘Sing’ video. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3r59f95t
• Jon Bon Jovi – His newly opened 5-story bar and music venue in Nashville, JBJ’s Nashville, now features a 4K hologram of the singer. And there are plans for additional hologram units to feature members of Bon Jovi the band, as well as the ability to “beam in” surprise guests as live holograms to entertain club patrons, as if they were there in person.
• Foo Fighters — Dave Grohl poked fun at Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” while onstage at London Stadium on Saturday, as their show happened to coincide with Swift’s nearby show at Wembley Stadium. Grohl quote: “So we like to call our tour the ‘Errors Tour.’ We’ve had more than a few eras, and more than a few (freaking) errors as well…That’s because we actually play live. What?! Just saying.”
• Prince — To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the movie “Purple Rain”, his band The Revolution will reunite for 2 shows in his hometown of Minneapolis during the annual “Celebration” festival, June 20-24. In addition, Prince-themed events will be held at the artist’s Paisley Park estate and throughout the city. There will also be with panel discussions, Purple Rain showings, boat cruises and more. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/bd9r97ja
• Oasis — Liam Gallagher has given his thoughts on reports the group will reform next year for a string of gigs. Responding to a post on X, Liam wrote: “Nobody’s told me maybe there getting a new singer like the dude out of Queen (sic).”
• Ozzy Osbourne – His wife/manager Sharon told Howie Mandel on his podcast that Ozzy is “building up his stamina, strength and balance” to be able to perform at his induction as a solo artist to the Rock Hall of Fame in Oct. The 75-year-old is dealing with a number of health issues that have also delayed the family’s move back to England – which has also put the brakes on a planned new BBC reality show.
• Dylan Scott — has dropped his new single ‘I Owe You One’, and while he didn’t write it, you’ve definitely heard of those who did. Morgan Wallen and ERNEST share songwriting credits, along with and Ashley Gorley and Mark Holman. Scott, though, said of the song: “It speaks right to me, the way I grew up, and the people I grew up with.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2r3hw738
• Zach Bryan — will release “The Great American Bar Scene” on July 4. This is his 5th studio album, and he has already released the song ‘Pink Skies (Eulogy)’. A vinyl version featuring 2 LPs will drop Oct. 7.
• Carly Pearce – is feeling better. May 30, she revealed she is dealing with a heart condition, pericarditis, which causes swelling and irritation of the tissue surrounding the heart, causing sharp chest pain. Sunday, she wrote on X: “I’m getting better every day & feeling more like myself! I’ll be running around like my usual self before you know it. Thanks for all of the prayers. I have felt them every single day.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3v89fmrm
SHOOTING THE BULL
TIKTOK SPEND:
It’s the new TikTok trend that you might not want to have anything to do with. The “no-spend” pledge encouragers users to cut-out all non-essential purchases for a set period – or a week, a month, or even a year. And while the intentions of the challenge are definitely honorable, such as to help break the habit of overspending, experts say that even the best of intentions can backfire. As Gregory Stoller, a professor at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, points out: “Why purchase non-essential products that you don’t need to begin with?” And besides, most financial experts say there is no shortcut to practicing good financial habits. Bottom line: Rather than hop on the latest extreme fad, everything comes back to “setting a budget and setting expectations”, said Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate.
(He’s absolutely right. And my expectations are to not be able to afford non-essential items until well into the next decade!)
(Hey, I’m sure I’m not the only one who has been doing this since about the time that the price of groceries went through the supermarket roof!)

ATTRACTION INVESTIGATION:
➢ People who are facially expressive are more well-liked and socially successful, say scientists at Nottingham Trent University. Their research, involving more than 1,300 people, found that those who move their faces more during conversations are better-liked by others, considered more agreeable and extraverted, and can even fare better in negotiations. The researchers say the results show that facial expressivity can work as a social glue that fosters liking, cooperation and smoother interactions, because these faces are considered more “readable”, or easier to decipher for others, and generally are seen to appear more friendly. (Not great for poker-playing, though…!)
➢ Women who are inclined toward tall men are more likely to consider themselves attractive, new research has revealed. Researchers at Texas A&M International University recruited 247 straight women for their study, which involved showing them a range of images depicting men of varying heights and “shoulder-to-hip ratios” (SHRs). The women were found to consider taller men with larger SHRs as more attractive, masculine, dominant, and better in fighting ability. No surprise there, as men with larger SHRs are likely to be broad-shouldered and have muscly arms. What the researchers didn’t necessarily expect was that women who rated themselves as attractive were more likely to say that taller men are more desirable. (Not surprising: All women were more likely to say that rich men are attractive!)

PACKAGE DEAL:
It looks like the end of the line for those plastic, air-filled little “pillows” that Amazon uses to protect your deliveries. The company announced last week that it has eliminated 95% of the single-use box fillers from its packaging in North America – and will probably be done with them world-wide by the end of this year. Amazon has replaced the plastic buffers with recycled paper, which it says is not only easier to recycle, it also does a better job protecting your stuff. In April, a conservation group estimated that Amazon created 208 million pounds of plastic waste in 2022 – in the US alone.
(Fine. But they can explain to my kids why there’s no more little plastic thingies that sound like a bomb went off when you pop ‘em!)
***Caution*** (Judging by his fiancée, I never took Jeff Bezos as a guy who had a thing against air-filled pillows!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Krispy Kreme is rolling out “Friends”-themed donuts. But good luck getting them. The company’s latest limited-edition donuts celebrate the 30th anniversary of the sitcom. But while the show was set in New York, the donuts are available only in the UK and Ireland. The Friends collection includes a chocolate glazed donut topped with an image of the fountain in the show’s opening credits, “Trifle”, a strawberry and custard filled donut that references an episode about a failed dessert, “How You Doin?”, echoing Monica’s iconic front door, and “We were on a Coffee Break,” a caffe latte flavored donut that includes the “Central Perk” cafe logo. The set’s limited availability has sparked a multitude of sarcastic online comments. (I know! Could they BE any harder to get?)

• “Leon Day” (‘Noel’ spelled backwards), observed exactly 6 months from Christmas, meaning we’re as far away from all that holiday rush and stress as we can be (and that you’ll start seeing Christmas stuff show up in stores in about 3 weeks…)
• “Catfish Day”, first initiated in 1987 to celebrate the value of farm-raised catfish. (Not the social media move where you pretend you’re someone you’re not, although it’s equally creepy…)
• “Day of the Seafarer”, initiated by the International Maritime Organization, to salute those in the shipping industry who bring us food, clothing, and other needs. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/k3fdjw
• “Global Beatles Day”, an annual observance celebrating the phenomenon of The Beatles and their long-lasting gifts to the world, including the promotion of peace and love. Held on the date that, in 1967, the Beatles participated in the BBC program “Our World” performing ‘All You Need Is Love’, in the first-ever live global television link (broadcast to 26 countries). LINK: http://globalbeatlesday.com
• “World Vitiligo Day”, to build global awareness of the chronic condition characterized by areas of skin losing pigment. The disfiguring disease can have a negative social and psychological impact on patients. (Michael Jackson, who died on this date in 2009, suffered from this condition.)
• “Color TV Day”. On this date in 1951, CBS broadcast the first color television show, “Premiere”. The variety show included Arthur Godfrey, Ed Sullivan, Garry Moore and Robert Alda. (Unfortunately, almost no one had a color TV to watch it on, but they had to start somewhere…)
• “Strawberry Parfait Day”. Parfait is French for “perfect”. The traditional parfait is a dessert of ice cream or frozen custard, layered with fruit and whipped cream, in a tall stemmed glass.
