Another Sheetload of Bull!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Following his release from prison, Bill Cosby could be planning a tour for a new one-man show. According to his spokesperson, “A number of promoters have called. Comedy club owners have called. People want to see him.” Cosby was serving a 3-10 year sentence for aggravated indecent assault, when on Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned the conviction.

★ The “Downton Abbey” sequel has been pushed back to March 2022. Production on a follow-up to the hit 2019 film, based on the period drama TV series, began in April and was originally slated for a Christmas release. However, the movie – which wraps production next month – will now be released on March 18, 2022. The original cast, including Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Imelda Staunton and Dame Maggie Smith, all return in the second installment.

★ Disney Parks around the globe have made some magical leaps to ensure that all guests and employees feel included. And on Thursday, as fireworks returned to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, one move became exceptionally clear. The park’s automated announcements, which play before all performances, were missing the traditional phrase, “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls.” Instead, they began simply with, “Good evening, dreamers of all ages.” According to a Disney spokesperson, the moves are part of the company’s effort to promote diversity at its parks as part of Disney’s Diversity & Inclusion policy, which was announced in April.

★ Michael J. Fox dropped out of high school in favor of an acting career, and never pursued higher education. But following Friday’s convocation at British Columbia’s Simon Fraser University, he’s now the proud recipient of an honorary doctorate from SFU’s Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology. Appearing remotely, the newly christened Dr. Fox wore the traditional cap and gown while delivering his virtual convocation speech, and joked that the outfit made him look like “Harry Potter” headmaster ‘Dumbledore’.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Bebe Rexha – Her 2017 megahit ‘Meant to Be’, featuring Florida Georgia Line, has become a member of YouTube’s ‘Billion Views Club’. While it is Florida Georgia Line’s first entry in the Billion Views Club, it’s Rexha’s second, after being featured on David Guetta’s 2014 hit ‘Hey Mama’.
• Jennifer Lopez – Today, she and Rauw Alejandro will finally release their anticipated summer hit ‘Cambia El Paso’, after teasing it for several weeks. She says it “is about change and not being afraid to take the step. If something’s not feeling right…just make that move. And dance.”
• Kelly Clarkson — is reportedly so eager to be done with her marriage that she has filed legal docs requesting that issues surrounding her divorce with Brendon Blackstock, including spousal support and custody of their children, be dealt with later, and that they be declared divorced now.
• Bon Jovi – Their music video for ‘It’s My Life’ has passed the billion-views mark on YouTube, more than two decades after its 2000 premiere. It’s group’s first entry in the video streaming platform’s Billion Views Club.
• Bruce Springsteen and Paul Simon — will headline a “homecoming concert” this summer in New York City’s Central Park, during a weeklong celebration of the city’s reopening. Jennifer Hudson will also take part in the festivities at the park’s Great Lawn. While a firm date has yet to be announced, Mayor Bill de Blasio has set a provisional date of Aug. 21.
• Poison – frontman Brett Michaels will be one of the artists featured on the newly rebooted “Behind the Music” on Paramount+. Episodes on Ricky Martin, LL Cool J, Huey Lewis, Busta Rhymes, Duran Duran, New Kids on the Block, and Fat Joe will round out the first season, beginning July 29.
• (***Check for dating***) Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani – Are they married? According to the court clerk in Johnston County, Oklahoma, the pair applied for their marriage license last Tuesday. Given that Oklahoma law requires that a couple has 10 days from the date they file for a marriage license to tie the knot, it would be logical that they tied the knot over the weekend.
• Lauren Alaina – will release a self-help book in November. On Instagram, she thanked Trisha Yearwood for writing the forward for “Getting Good at Being You”. Kelsea Ballerini also recently announced that she is putting out a poetry book in November.
• Trisha Yearwood — has released a new, acoustic version of ‘She’s in Love With the Boy’ to mark her debut (self-titled) album’s 30th anniversary. The original song reached #1 on Billboard’s U.S. Country chart in 1991, making Yearwood the first-ever female country artist to hit #1 with a debut single.

SHOOTING THE BULL

PROTECTION AND DETECTION:
Some day, we might be wearing face masks that can detect COVID-19. Engineers from Harvard University and MIT have designed a mask prototype that can alert the wearer of a COVID-19 diagnosis within about 90 minutes. At first glance, it looks like a standard KN95 mask. But engineers fitted small, disposable sensors in it, which they say could be easily fitted to other mask models — and could be adapted to detect other viruses. The programmable biosensors could also be integrated into other garments, like lab coats, which would then provide “on-the-go detection” of other viruses, bacteria, toxins, and chemical agents.
(You should have seen their faces when they came up with that. I mean, you couldn’t, because they were wearing a mask. But you should have…)
(Great news and all…But I was sort of hoping they’d be working on a “some day” when we wouldn’t have to wear a mask at all…)

BEST CASE SCENARIO:
The US Transportation Department plans to force airlines to refund fees on checked luggage if it isn’t delivered to passengers quickly enough. The new rules will require refunds if airlines fail to deliver a bag within 12 hours of the passenger’s U.S. flight touching down or within 25 hours after an international flight. Current regulations require refunds only if bags are lost. The proposal, if approved, would also require prompt refunds for fees on extras such as internet access, if the airline fails to provide the service during the flight. The agency plans to issue the proposal in the next few days, and it could take effect by next summer.
(Of course, there WILL be a refund fee…)
(It’s expected to be approved with no problems. Basically, an open and shut case.)
(Once, I tried to sue an airline for misplacing my luggage. Naturally, I lost my case…)

OVER THE TOP DOWN UNDER:
⇒ An Australian childcare chain has sparked controversy after suggesting that parents should ask for their toddlers’ consent before changing their diapers. Only About Children published a blogpost about “respectful nappy changes” and teaching children about respect and consent from an early age. According to the article, “Toddlers don’t like to be interrupted when they are playing.” Parents should “Wait for a gap in their playing before starting the nappy changing process.” It also suggests parent give kids some autonomy and ask, ‘Would you like to walk to the change table or should I carry you?'” It says diaper changes can be “important opportunities for learning and relationship building,” and once they are able to walk, toddlers may “wish to now stand for their nappy change”. (I cannot see that ending well…)
⇒ Many people have reluctantly gotten used to having curfews imposed on them as part of lockdown measures, but I’m not so sure that cats will accept them quite so willingly. A municipality in Melbourne, Australia has announced that felines will be subject to a “24-hour cat curfew,” requiring owners to keep their cats on their property at all times. Knox City Council Mayor Lisa Cooper said: “When allowed to roam, cats are at a much higher risk of illness and injury. Keeping cats within their owners’ property also protects wildlife and prevents them causing nuisance for neighbors and their pets.” Wandering cats may be picked up and fines may be issued, once the new rule goes into effect on Oct. 1.
(How would you like to be the guy whose job it is to be in charge of finding and “picking up” loose cats in the middle of the night!)
(I know MY cat wouldn’t take this lying down! Well, actually, she’d definitely take this lying down…)

MORE TERMS GEN X’ers ARE USING THESE DAYS ON TIKTOK:
TikTok has become the go-to place for influencers, and the language used on the platform consistently goes viral, including the term “cheugy”, used to make fun of out-of-date millennial trends. Here are some more . . .
➢ Bop: When a song, or album, is really good. (“That song is a bop!”)
➢ No Cap/Capping: Cap is another word for lie. “No cap” means that you aren’t lying.
➢ Drip: A sexy or trendy sense of style, like swag. When someone has good drip, people will hype them up by having them do a “drip check,” which is showing off your outfit. (I rarely feel the need to show off if my outfit is “dripping”…)
➢ (***Caution: ‘Damn’***) Sheesh: Used to hype someone up when they look good or do something good, like saying “damn” (Except it doesn’t sound like the 1990s!)
➢ Ded/💀: Something so funny that it killed you. The skull emoji is used in place of the laughing emoji. Example: “That girl that does the seagull noises has me ded.”
➢ Living rent free: Can’t stop thinking about something. Also used as an insult when someone is upset about something.
➢ Vibe check: Checking someone’s energy or personality. Can be a permanent thing, or just based on something someone does.
➢ Iykyk: Stands for “If you know, you know.” Used to describe an inside joke or something a certain community would understand. (And I definitely did “nk” any of these before just now!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Not getting enough sleep as a young adult can be bad for your eyes. Researchers at Flinders University in Australia found that people who are myopic, or nearsighted, are more likely to have delayed circadian rhythms than people who are not. These “body clock” interruptions are a result of excessive exposure to the blue light of our electronics screens, which can interrupt the release of melatonin, making it harder for us to fall asleep. The scientists theorize that this delay in circadian rhythms “can affect important rhythms within the eye that could then predispose people to myopia.”

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Graham Cracker Day”, saluting the wafer developed in 1829 by Presbyterian minister Sylvester Graham who believed consumption of graham flour suppressed “carnal urges”. What’s the best use for graham crackers? Pie crust? S’mores? Moon pies? (Anti-aphrodisiac?)

• “Workaholics Day”, a day to remove your nose from the grindstone … just once. (As Rodney Dangerfield said, “My old man was a workaholic. You mentioned work, he got drunk.”)

• “Bikini Day”, celebrating the July 5, 1946 unveiling of the landmark swimsuit by designer Louis Reard at a Paris press conference, which he described as ‘4 triangles of nothing’. The bikini is named after a tiny Pacific atoll (ring-shaped reef) where the first atomic bomb tests were performed earlier that week.

• “Apple Turnover Day”, also called hand pies because they are so portable, apple turnovers are a pastry made by placing apple filling on a piece of dough, folding the dough over, sealing it, then baking them. Although most turnovers are baked, they can also be fried.

• “Mechanical Pencil Day”, created by Cult Pens, a purveyor of pens and pencils, after they noticed there was a “Fountain Pen Day,” but not a day for mechanical pencils. They set it for July 5th, a date written as 7/5 or 5/7, depending on where in the world one lives. These numbers are significant because the most common mechanical pencil lead sizes are 0.5 mm and 0.7 mm.
