SHOOTING THE BULL
SPAVING:
Financial experts are warning about the new trend of “spaving”. The new trend of what-now? While the marketing ploy of enticing shoppers to spend more now — in order to save money later isn’t anything new, a number of media outlets have recently done stories explaining how spaving is contributing to people racking up record amounts of debt. Lately, businesses have become very creative in how they encourage more spending, including store credit cards, spending minimums for free shipping, subscriptions and the ever-popular “buy one, get one” deal. But spending to save doesn’t necessarily translate into more savings, which many consumers have discovered the hard way…by checking their credit card balance. One expert says the best way to approach a spaving deal is to pretend it’s not even there. Treat it like you never saw it, and make an effort to only buy what you originally intended to buy.
(But… but…but…That just sounds so…UnAmerican! [***or insert your country’s name***]
(The preceding was NOT a paid commercial message brought to you by any of the advertisers on this station…and it might be a good time right now to mention how much we love them!)

THE TOOTH HURTS:
☞ If you love your carbs, beware: Foods such as white bread, pasta, chips, cereal and crackers could be worse for your teeth than dessert. Whitney DiFoggio, a registered dental hygienist, is warning that fermentable carbohydrates are bad for teeth because they break down into “sneaky sugars” while they’re still being chewed, which increases your chances of tooth decay. Parents will often offer Goldfish crackers over candy because they believe it’s a healthier option, “but it might be just as bad”, DiFoggio said. The good news? Dark chocolate is surprisingly good for your teeth because it can be easily rinsed off, as are foods that “require heavier biting and chewing,” such as crunchy vegetables. (That part about the veggies? That wasn’t good news to me at all…!)
☞ A dentist went viral TikTok earlier this year after sharing the circumstances in which you should actually skip brushing your teeth — at least for awhile. Dr. Shaadi Manouchehri, clinical director at Smart Dental Aesthetics and director at the London School of Facial Esthetics in England, said in a clip that has more than 12 million views, that you should leave the toothbrush alone…
• After throwing up.
• After eating breakfast.
• After eating sweets.
Why should you not brush at these times? The good doctor explains that there is one factor that links the 3 circumstances together: pH levels, or acidity in the mouth. As she puts it: “Your teeth are minerals and an acid could quite literally dissolve them.” She advises waiting 30-60 minutes before brushing in each of these circumstances. (If I waited 30 minutes after eating sweets, I’d end up NEVER brushing them!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yc8kya8h

TIPPING POINT:
These days, many feel overwhelmed and annoyed with “tipping culture”, but it seems that some are more generous than others. And if you were to guess, which generation would you say tips the best – Gen Z or boomers? You might be surprised. According to a new survey conducted by the personal finance site Bankrate, negative feelings about tipping tend to grow with age. The survey found that a majority of boomers (ages 60-78) and Gen X (44-59) reported a negative view of tipping — 72% and 62%, respectively, while 51% of millennials (ages 28-43) and 45% of Gen Z (18 and 27) reported the same level of dissatisfaction. But just because one is fed-up with being expected to tip seemingly everywhere, doesn’t mean they don’t do it. 86% of baby boomers said they still leave a tip every time they visit a sit-down restaurant. That was followed by 78% of Gen Xers, 56% of millennials, and just 35% of Gen Zers.
(Does Gen Z even go to restaurants? I thought they just get delivery – and tip the Uber Eats guy!)
(I’m not mad about tipping because I’m old – I’m mad about tipping because I’m still waiting for the ketchup I asked for!)

COUNTRIES THAT CHANGED THEIR NAMES:
❑ Turkey to Türkiye: In 2022, its government requested that international organizations use Türkiye officially, to “represent and express the culture, civilization, and values of the Turkish nation in the best way”. (We understand, from the song, that the city Istanbul used to have a different name, too!)
❑ Czech Republic to Czechia: In 2016, this change was formally made after almost 20 years of discussion. Until that time, it had been referred to by both names.
❑ Holland to the Netherlands: Holland decided to officially undergo the name change in 2020. Reportedly, it was a marketing move, and a way to present the country as an open, and inclusive country.
❑ Ceylon to Sri Lanka: This change was made in 1972, to break from colonial associations.
❑ Kampuchea to Cambodia: Cambodia is derived from the Kampuchea, which is actually the English translation of Cambodia. In 1976, the communist government officially called the country Kampuchea, but after his regime came to an end, the country began to be called Cambodia.

DID YOU KNOW?
The latest disturbing food trend on TikTok is – get ready for it – slathering Kit Kats with ketchup. But as you might imagine, many people are grossed out by just the thought of this strange combination. Proponents, however, say not to yuck their yum. The trend first made its rounds in 2021, but it’s had a resurgence, with even Heinz and KitKat getting in on it. On Instagram, KitKat posted a video of employees testing the combo…with mixed reviews. One said: “I feel this trend will take some time to ketchup”. Another: “Jail. Now. Goodbye”. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/36kar4by

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Corn on the Cob Day”. Corn is an ancient plant native to the Americas. It is believed to have been first cultivated in Mexico and spread around the world via European explorers in the 15th and 16th centuries. Because eating it is a messy affair, and leads to corn sticking to your teeth, etiquette rules that it should never be served at formal occasions (or ordered on a first date!).
• “Cousteau Day”, a celebration of Jacques Cousteau’s life. In his 87 years, Captain Cousteau’s immense contributions to marine science and conservation, including the production of more than 120 documentaries, advancing the science of scuba, and promoting environmental activism, are indisputable.
• “German Chocolate Cake Day”. The first thing you should know about it is that it is not from Germany! It is named after American Samuel German, who came up with a dark baking chocolate for Baker’s Chocolate Company in 1852, which was named Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate.
