BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Ryan Reynolds has done some pretty random things over the years and the Vancouver International Airport is now trying to use that to their advantage. One of Canada’s largest airports is trying to get his attention through a video tweet where Craig Richmond, the president of the company, offers Reynolds a position as ‘celebrity ambassador’. The airport is desperately trying to find someone to deliver a message they don’t think the population of British Columbia is aware of. This concerns their status as a non-profit company and that they are, in fact, not owned by the government. While the Reynolds campaign ad is partly a joke, Richmond does believe that with the help of the Vancouver-born actor and other celebs, their message might be heard.

★ Forget the Iron Throne. The cast of “Game of Thrones” now has its eyes some Emmys – big time. The HBO drama walked away with 32 Emmy nominations on Tuesday, setting a new record for most nominations earned in a single year by any drama series. To date, “Game of Thrones” has won 47 Emmys and been nominated 161 times, including this year’s nominations. It is currently the most Emmy-winning primetime series in history.
(32 noms! Imagine if the final season had been good!)

★ Whoopi Goldberg is done cruising the open road. She has revealed that she’s no longer driving due to poor eyesight. While hosting “The View” on Monday, she said: “I have a driver. The reason I have a driver is because I am not allowed to drive. My sight is not good enough, people get nervous when I get behind the wheel, so, I am not allowed to really drive.” Goldberg’s health has been a topic of conversation over the past few months after she revealed that she nearly died in February from pneumonia and sepsis.

★ One of the most infamous murder houses is hitting the market in Los Angeles and you can own it for just $1,988,800. The house was the scene of the infamous LaBianca murders, where supermarket chain owner Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary were both brutally murdered by the Manson family. The victim’s blood was used to spell out “Helter Skelter” on the refrigerator. The LaBiancos were killed the night after the grisly Sharon Tate murder. Next month marks the 50-year anniversary of the infamous murders, just as Quentin Tarantino’s movie, “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood” premieres.

★ Netflix is removing a controversial graphic scene depicting a youth suicide from its young adult drama “13 Reasons Why,” following advice from medical experts. The show, based on a book of the same name, depicts the suicide of the protagonist ‘Hannah’ in the last episode of season 1, with a scene her slitting her wrists in a bathtub. While critically acclaimed, the show has drawn criticism from groups including the Parents Television Council (PTC), which claims the show glorifies teen suicide.

JAVA UPDATE:
Will that be hot or cold coffee? Coffee is known to be rich in healthful antioxidants, which are beneficial in reducing the risk of several diseases. But for those of us who enjoy a cold coffee drink during the summer months – are we getting the same benefits? Well, no. Cleveland Clinic doctors found that hot coffee has about 50 percent more antioxidants than cold brewed coffee. Why? When coffee is brewed cold, it is a totally different process, and you wind up with less acidity and about half the antioxidants. Previous research has shown the major benefits of coffee come from both the antioxidants and the caffeine. Other studies have linked coffee consumption to a reduced risk for diseases such as type two diabetes, liver disease, and heart disease. The problem? If we load our coffees full of cream, sugar, syrups or whipped cream – we can wipe out all of those health benefits in a hurry. For those who like their coffee cold, one expert suggests brewing it hot and then having it over ice.
(If hot coffee with cream and sugar are bad for you, and cold coffee is bad for you, where does that leave me if I like cold coffee with cream and sugar? The emergency room?)
(There is one benefit of iced coffee, though: You don’t have to worry about it getting cold!)

HEAVY PETTING:
Scientists say they have proven that petting cats and dogs is effective in reducing stress levels. Tests at Washington State University showed that the general well-being of students improves quickly, with even those who are highly-stressed showing “significant” reduction in cortisol levels. That’s a chemical made by the body in times of stress. Many universities have adopted “Pet Your Stress Away” programs where students can interact with cats or dogs. Patricia Pendry, an associate professor in WSU’s Department of Human Development says that just 10 minutes with a furry friend “can have a significant impact”. She says that the reduction of stress hormones over time may have significant physical and mental health benefits.
(Thanks, guys. Now did you want to get to work on proving something that we DIDN’T already know?)
(So petting your dog reduces your stress levels. Unless it pees on the carpet!)
(I have to admit that this is NOT the method I generally used to reduce stress levels when I was in college!)

DID YOU KNOW?
An analysis found that one-third of household dust is created inside the home, and consists of wonderful-sounding things like sloughed off human and pet skin cells, dust mites, decomposed insects, food debris, fibers from carpet, bedding and clothes, and particulate matter from smoking and cooking. The other two-thirds which originated outside was found to consist of pollen, silt, burnt meteorite particles, and many other materials which may be found in the local environment, such as lead(!).
