BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Netflix has revealed a first look at the cast and sets of “Stranger Things” season 5. A new behind-the-scenes video returns to some well-known locations of the show, including Castle Byers, Hawkins High School and, of course, some of the most terrifying woods you’ve ever seen. The entire cast is back, and star Millie Bobby Brown reflects on the journey of getting to the end, saying: “I started when I was 10, I’m now turning 20 years old.” The clip also reveals 3 cast additions for the final season: Nell Fisher (“Bookworm”,  “Choose Love”), Jake Connelly and Alex Breaux (“Waco: The Aftermath”). The final season is expected to premiere sometime in 2025. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/579refdf

★ Months before her death, Shannen Doherty revealed exactly how she wanted her remains to be handled. She said on her “Let’s Be Clear” podcast in January that she wished for her ashes “to be mixed with” her dog and her father’s ashes. Quote: “Like, really mix it up so it’s a healthy mixture of my father, me and Bowie.” Doherty also gave her friend and episode guest host, Chris Cortazzo, permission to wear some of her ashes around his neck, as she did with her dad’s ashes following his death in 2010. Doherty died Saturday at age 53, surrounded by her family and beloved dog.

★ Jon Stewart and the team from “The Daily Show” are staying close to home during the Republican National Convention. After planning to cover the event with a satirical lens in host city Milwaukee, the show canceled last night’s program, and announced it will air tonight through Thursday from its usual base in New York City. Sunday’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump appears to be the reason. A social media message cited “logistical issues and the evolving situation in Milwaukee.”

★ A lawyer for “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed plans to file a motion to have her involuntary manslaughter case dismissed, following the revelation the prosecution failed to turn over evidence during Alec Baldwin’s court case, causing the judge to throw the case for the manslaughter of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins out of court. Gutierrez-Reed’s attorney Jason Bowles told NBC News that they will be filing “on the same basis…violations which have occurred throughout her case and continue to occur”. Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months.

★ Johnny Depp continues his comeback since his 2022 defamation suit victory against Amber Heard. Next up: playing a gibberish-speaking puffin. And it’s not a return to “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Depp is returning to animation, a format that served him well in films like “Corpse Bride” and “Rango”. In “Johnny Puff: Secret Mission”, he plays a fedora-wearing puffin living in the arctic, who goes to battle with the evil ‘Otto von Walrus’. In a new featurette about the film, Depp says that he invented a language for the character, mixing his dialogue “with the actual sound of a puffin.” The results? A sea parrot in a red bandana saying things like, “Rama-lama-yama.” The feature hits streaming services tomorrow. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yvjv4hke

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Ed Sheeran, Céline Dion, Dua Lipa, Jennifer Lopez, Shania Twain, and Gwen Stefani — are among the artists who sing with opera icon Andrea Bocelli on his album “Duets” out Oct. 25. Some songs were previously recorded; some are new.
• Katy Perry – Her new album (out Sept. 20) is called “143”, a numerical representation for “I love you.” But the number is even more meaningful to her. Quote: “It’s my angel number…A couple years ago, we were going through a…hard time medically in our family…and I started seeing 143 in many different ways. I really believe it was my angels, my guides saying, ‘I love you.’”
• Tate McRae – is having a pretty good month: She turned 21, did her first-ever hometown show in Calgary AB, is currently in the middle of her “Think Later” US tour, and definitely appreciates the way things are going. Quote: “I feel very grateful … and I can’t believe it’s my real life.”
• Radiohead – The Smile, the side-project starring Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke, had to cancel their entire run of European summer shows due to Greenwood’s medical emergency. A statement says he “became seriously ill from an infection that needed emergency hospital treatment, some of it in intensive care.” He is said to be out of danger now, and plans to return home.
• Phil Collins – His 1993 solo album “Both Sides” will get an expanded reissue for its 30th anniversary. Out Sept 20, the 5-LP package will include a remastered version of the original album, early demo tracks, live songs and other rarities. The original album included the hits ‘Both Sides of the Story’ and ‘Everyday’.
• Miranda Lambert – For the second time this month, she had to shut down some rowdy fans. During her Sat. set at the Under the Big Sky Festival in Montana, she stopped the show, and said: “If you came to visit, you can do it somewhere else. If you came to sing and hear some country music and drink some beer and raise some hell, then we’re doing that tonight.” She then joked: It’s always the girls. We get crazy!” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3dtj6f46
• Chris Stapleton – teamed up with Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli (of all people) on the new song ‘Il Mare Calmo della Sera’ from Bocelli’s new “Duets” album, which drops Oct. 25.
• Lainey Wilson – despite the fact she has a loving relationship with her man, Devlin Duck Hodges, she had no trouble coming up with the names of her celebrity crushes during an appearance on “Today Show”. Quote: See, I’m all about humor. That’s what makes somebody cute to me. So um…Matthew McConaughey, of course…(and) Ashton Kutcher, yeah.”

SHOOTING THE BULL

SAVED BY THE…WHISTLE?
Yes, watching an important football or basketball game – or any sports match — can be a stressful experience (especially if you have cash on the line…). But here’s the good news: New research has shown that people who watch sports actually enjoy greater wellbeing than those who don’t – and this could make them live longer. Scientists at Anglia Ruskin University used survey data from over 7,000 adults in England, and found that those who attended a live sporting event in the last year are more satisfied with their lives, feel their lives are more worthwhile, and are less lonely than people who haven’t. And other studies have found that people who watch sports in person at least once a year have fewer depressive symptoms than those who do not. It was also found that watching sports on TV and online can also be good for your wellbeing – and therefore could also contribute to a longer lifespan.
(…they wouldn’t say that if they knew how many Doritos I can eat in the course of one game!)
(So, the next time your wife complains that you wasted the entire weekend watching football, explain to her that it was an investment in your future together!)

COSTPOCALYPSE:
Why not? If Costco can sell coffins, they might as well sell these things too. A recent viral Instagram post shows what is being called the bulk retailer’s “Apocalypse Dinner Kit”, containing food that supposedly will last for 25 years, in case of, well, you know, a doomsday event that you happen to survive. I’m not sure if this is a new thing at Costco, but influencer ‘Pressure Luck’ has just discovered it in his clip. Footage shows him examining the contents of the “Emergency Food Supply Variety Pack”, which comes in a black bucket with a red lid. Inside are 150 servings of freeze-dried food, including pasta alfredo, cheesy macaroni, teriyaki rice, creamy pasta and vegetables, potato pot pie, tomato basil soup with pasta, chicken noodle soup, brown sugar and maple multi-grain, and apple cinnamon cereal. Also in there: crunchy granola, white rice, vanilla pudding, whey milk alternative, and an orange drink. Just add water, and voila! You’ve got a total of 15,280 calories — and you’re all set for when disaster hits. How much? Just $99. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/22vysats
(Hey! I can get that many calories at McDonald’s for less than half that price — And if there’s no McD’s when doomsday hits, I don’t want to be around anyway!)
(Yeah, my kid brought about 20 of those things with him to college last September…)

VACATION ANTICIPATION:
⇒ “Grocery store tourism” is becoming a thing for Gen Z travelers. Foreign grocery stores have become a ‘must-check out’ for a growing number of vacationers, who feel that adding unfamiliar overseas supermarkets to their sightseeing list can teach them about local food and culture – for much less than it would cost to visit trendy restaurants. Pushing a grocery cart alongside the locals as they shop for food and necessities has become an obsession with some young travelers, who have been sharing their fascinating findings on social media. And some are even travelling within their own country to check out what’s available in other places, like the TikToker who journeyed to the US west coast for the sole purpose of visiting the luxury supermarket chain known for expensive smoothies created by celebs such as Hailey Bieber [3 for $88]. (When I said I wanted to fly to a remote isle, I didn’t mean a “grocery aisle”!)
⇒ The latest vacation trend is not knowing where you’re going until you get to the airport. “Mystery travel” involves easy-going people outsourcing the job of planning their getaway to a travel agent, who looks after booking flights, restaurant reservations and other details without their knowledge. All the vacationer needs to do is provide a few broad location preferences — and show up at the airport on time. The travel agent gives them a few tips about what to pack, and a sealed envelope, to be opened upon arrival at the airport. (…which my wife would have opened 5 days ago…and spilled the beans about 4 days ago…!)

FAMOUS FIGURES WHOSE NAMES YOU’RE PROBABLY MISPRONOUNCING:
✗ Dr. Seuss: You may know this one. Theodore Seuss Geisel’s pen name was Dr. Seuss. The correct German pronunciation rhymes with “voice”.
✗ Jake Gyllenhaal: His surname pronounced properly sounds something like “Yeel-en-high-luh.” He joked to Conan O’Brien that the only places that can get it right are Sweden and IKEA.
✗ Dr. Jekyll: Turns out it’s actually “Jeek-ul.” The character comes from the 1886 novella “Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”, where the Scottish pronunciation would have “Jekyll” rhyming with “treacle,” not “heckle.” (We’re told even Hyde got it wrong…)
✗ Vincent Van Gogh: North Americans pronounce it “van Go,” while Brits tend to say it “van Goff.” Turns out the Dutch pronounce it with a more guttural noise, which sounds like something between a cough and a laugh: “Khokh.” (Bless you!)
✗ Genghis Khan: Most say this with a hard “G,” like in the word “great.” But the Mongols actually called their legendary leader “Chinghis Khan.” And the internationally accepted pronunciation uses a soft “G,” beginning with a “jay” sound.
✗ Matt Groening: Of course, you WANT to say “groaning.” But the “oe” in The Simpsons creator’s name is pronounced like “ay,” making the correct pronunciation “graining.”
✗ Lindsay Lohan: When she posted her first TikTok in 2022, she introduced herself by saying, not surprisingly, “Hey everyone, it’s Lindsay Lohan”. To the surprise of many, she pronounced her last name: “LOW-en” instead of “LOW-han.” (So, as long as she wasn’t drunk…)
✗ Amanda Seyfried: Her last name is often mispronounced “Sea-fred,” “Sea-fried,” or even “Seigfred.” The correct way to say it is “Sigh-fred”.
✗ Martin Scorsese: While commonly pronounced “Scor-say-zee,” he introduces himself in an Entourage episode as Marty “Scor-sess-ee.”
✗ Demi Moore: She is on record as saying her name as “Duh-mee” rather than “Dem-ee.”
✗ Rihanna: While many say “Ree-ah-nuh,” the most dedicated fans know she actually pronounces it “Ree-ann-uh.” (and don’t even get me started on Ariana Grande…or Chad Kroeger!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Tennis is a fairly civilized sport, except for all that grunting. Yes, the sounds can be involuntary, but they serve a purpose just the same (Pardon the pun…). Grunting encourages players to fully exhale and breathe more deeply on the court, which can improve their play, according to Croatian coach Nikola Aracic said. Grunting can also help players hit the ball harder, according to research. The tone of the grunt matters, too: Players with lower, more guttural grunts are more likely to beat opponents with higher-pitched grunts. (On the other hand, players who grunt TOO MUCH are more likely to be beaten…with a racquet!)

• “World Snake Day”, a celebration by wildlife enthusiasts of the age-old fascination with these beautiful but misunderstood creatures. (Snakes are so creepy that even snakes are afraid of snakes…)
• “Guinea Pig Appreciation Day”, as far as small fuzzies go, the Guinea Pig is certainly one of the world’s favorites. Domesticated in South America thousands of years ago, they’re one of the longest-serving human companions. (Be sure to keep them away from those snakes!)
• “Personal Chefs Day”, an annual reminder to consider hiring a private chef for a day, a unique way to entertain friends or business guests in your home. It’s not as costly as you might think. (Funny enough, there is also a Personal Chef Day in February. Was this part of the contract?)
• “Corn Fritter Day”, a celebration of comfort food and simple cooking. With some corn, egg, flour, milk, and melted butter, anyone can throw together a batch of these side dish favorites. Plus, you can add your own favorite ingredients to spice them up, or create your very own fritter monstrosity. Sardines and chocolate chips, anyone?
• “Cherry Day”, some fun facts about cherries…
– Cherry trees are so fruitful that they can produce as many as 28 tarts.
– Cherries can be sweet or sour.
– Around 94% of all cherries ingested in the United States are produced in Michigan.
– Cherry pits contain toxins and should not be consumed.
– There are over 1000 distinct cherry varieties, both sweet and sour, but only 20% are used commercially.
