Never Accept a Generic – Ask For Pure “BS”!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Comic book icon Alan Moore is urging fans to boycott Dwayne Johnson’s new “Hercules” movie because it’s … ‘wretched’. Outspoken Moore believes it’s shameless for director Brett Ratner to release the film so soon after the death of fellow comic book writer Steve Moore (no relation), who created the “Hercules: The Thracian War” series. He died earlier this year. Alan Moore says his namesake found out about plans to turn his comics into a movie just a few months before his death and was angry about not being consulted. Dwayne Johnson hits the bigscreen as “Hercules” on Friday. (Um, when you sell the rights … you sell the rights.)

★ The best-selling novel “Fight Club” is getting a sequel. The sequel “Fight Club 2” is being planned as a 10-issue Dark Horse Comics miniseries coming in 2015. It picks up a decade after the ending of the original book, which was released in 1996. There’s no word yet if there is a movie adaptation in the works for this project. The critically acclaimed screen version of the original debuted in movie theaters in 1999, starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. (It’s OK, guys. We don’t need another sequel.)

★ And 27-year-old “Glee” star Naya Rivera has married close pal Ryan Dorsey, just 3 months after her engagement to rapper Big Sean ended. Reports say she and her longtime friend Ryan tied the knot in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in front of a small group of friends and family after a whirlwind romance. The wedding comes as a shock to many as it was only revealed last week that the couple was even dating after they were spotted on vacation together. Quoted in “People” magazine, they say: ”True love always prevails.” (Would you marry your bestie?)

A BS selection of movies in the making …
• “The Best Man Wedding” – Writer-director Malcolm D Lee is shooting a 3rd film in the “Best Man” series that’s scheduled to be released April 15, 2016. It follows 1999’s original “The Best Man”, and last year’s” The Best Man Holiday”. The cast of the previous films is also expected to return including Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard, and Regina Hall.
• “Manimal” – Sony Pictures is rebooting the vintage TV show as an action-comedy movie combining animation and live action. The original 1983 NBC series starred Simon MacCorkindale as a man with the ability to turn himself into any animal, a talent he used to help police catch criminals. Actor Will Ferrell is a co-producer on the movie project.
• “Medusa” – British film director Peter Webber is planning to shoot another movie based around the story behind a famous painting. It would be his follow-up to 2003’s “Girl With a Pearl Earring”, which starred Scarlett Johansson as the subject of Dutch master Johannes Vermeer’s famous 17th century painting. The new film is set in post-revolutionary France.
• “Silence” – Martin Scorsese’s long-delayed movie adaptation of Shusako Endo’s 1966 historical novel of the same name is now set to hit theaters in November 2015. Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver star as 17th century Jesuit missionaries who travel to Japan to search for their mentor. Liam Neeson and Ken Watanabe co-star. Production begins in Taiwan later this year.

HOW TO FEEL FULLER:
Watching your waistline? Reach for umami, new research suggests. Like spicy foods, it may help curb your appetite. Umami is the savory flavor that’s been dubbed the ‘5th taste’ after bitter, salty, sour, and sweet. A loanword from Japanese, it can be translated as ‘pleasant savory taste’. Scientists are as yet unsure why certain foods affect appetite. It could be based on which taste buds are activated by specific foods. But at least according to this latest study, eating umami may help you feel fuller and more satisfied. Foods high in natural umami include beef, pork, chicken, tomatoes, and mushrooms. (Our first exposure to it is often breast milk. Does that explain the name … umami?)

WHY YOUR OFFICE JOB IS KILLING YOU:
If you have a desk job, you spend approximately 9.3 hours per day sitting. Sitting for 6 or more hours daily makes you 40% more likely to die within 15 years than someone who sits less than 3 … even if you eat healthy and exercise. In fact, sitting all day is one of the most dangerous things you do. Here’s why …
✗ As soon as you sit down your body basically goes into meltdown. Electrical activity in your leg muscles, for instance, shuts off completely.
✗ Calorie-burning drops to 1 calorie per minute.
✗ Enzymes that help break down fat drop by almost 90%.
✗ After 2 hours of sitting your good cholesterol drops by 20%.
✗ Sitting for most of the day increases your risk of heart attack as much as smoking.
A few solutions: Get a standing desk, pace around, fidget, and reduce your sitting time. (And get the heck off the couch while you’re at home.)

SNIFF TEST FOR SAFETY:
The ‘pd.id’, which stands for ‘Personal Drink ID’, is a new portable device that can detect the presence of roofies in that beverage you just put down on the bar. The battery-powered gizmo is being funded on Indiegogo. Borrowing technology from the US Drug Enforcement Administration, it works by analyzing your drink’s molecular components via its light spectrum, current, and temperature. All you have to do is dunk the battery-powered gadget into your cocktail, and it’ll give you a reading as well as lighting up if your drink’s been drugged. It’s expected to cost $75 and the makers expect to begin shipping product in March. (Nifty idea but needs a better name, no?)

BEST BAR IN THE WORLD:
London hotel bar The Artesian has been named ‘World’s Best Bar’ for the 2nd year in-a-row at the 8th annual “Tales Of the Cocktail” festival in New Orleans LA. The bar in The Langham boutique hotel has also snagged ‘Best International Hotel Bar’, ‘Best International Bar Team’, and ‘International Bartender Of the Year’ for its barman Simone Caporale. Other winners …
• The Dead Rabbit in NYC … ‘World’s Best Drinks Selection’.
• 28 Hong Kong Street in Singapore … ‘Best International Cocktail Bar’.
• The Aviary in Chicago IL … ‘World’s Best Cocktail Menu’.
The festival is one of the most highly anticipated events for the cocktail and bartending world. (Funny, don’t see our hangout the Bucket of Blood on the list here anywhere.)
