BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ (***UPDATE***) “The Crown” and “The Mandalorian” lead nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards, the highest honors in television. HBO and HBO Max lead all networks with 130 nominations, followed by Netflix with 129. The Emmy Awards will be handed out at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Sept. 19, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer. As expected, the ceremony will return in front of “a limited audience of nominees and their guests.” Talk shows such as CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and trophy shows like the BET Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards — all of the ViacomCBS properties also — have welcomed back studio audiences in recent weeks as well.

★ Paris Hilton is cooking up a new project: the new Netflix show, “Cooking With Paris.” It will feature the hotel heiress and business mogul learning her way around the kitchen with the help of her famous friends. Her show will put a spin on the traditional cooking show, as Hilton is not a trained chef and doesn’t really know how to cook — but she certainly knows how to entertain viewers. Cooking With Paris will launch on the streaming giant on Aug. 4 with 6 half-hour episodes.

★ “Spencer,” the highly anticipated drama starring Kristen Stewart as Lady Diana, will world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival. Written by “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight, the film centers on a weekend in the early 1990s when Diana decided to separate from Prince Charles amid rumors of affairs. The late princess was spending the Christmas holiday with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, when she decided to leave her marriage to Prince Charles. The Venice Film Festival begins Sept. 1.

★ One of the greats from the World Wrestling Federation’s 1980s heyday has passed away: “Mr. Wonderful,” Paul Orndorff was 71. Mr. Wonderful was instantly recognizable for his impressive build and blond hair, but his son said friends and family loved him for something else – his kind heart. He came up in the southern wrestling circuit, and signed with the World Wrestling Federation in late 1983, with “Rowdy” Roddy Piper as his manager. Piper nicknamed Orndorff “Mr. Wonderful”. Upon news of his death, frequent foe Hulk Hogan tweeted: “heaven just got even more Wonderful.”

SHOOTING THE BULL

FIVER PARTIES:
Parents of young ones…here’s the latest birthday party trend: “The Fiver Party”. Here’s how it works . . . rather than hosting a birthday party for your child and having them receive 15 toys from Walmart that they may or may not already have, that they may or may not ever play with, and that YOU have to find room for in your house, you simply ask guests to bring $5 instead. Guests roll up to your trampoline party or your princess party with a $5 bill (a.k.a. a “fiver”). Your kid then pools all the cash and gets to buy that one super cool gift they really want. This way, your child gets to select one great gift, you don’t have to worry about an invasion of large and sometimes loud newcomers to the toybox, and other frazzled parents don’t have to go shopping for yet another $20 gift one of the 32 birthday parties that their kids are is invited to over the summer.
(I’ve heard of this. Except the way my kid tells it, they’re called a “FIFTY-er Party…!)
(I’m pretty sure my kid’s birthday wish is that I never hear of a Fiver Party!)
(So that’s fun for the kids…and when it’s time to plan a celebration for your parents…think of having a “Fiber Party!)

YOUNG AND RECKLESS:
For many, life in their early twenties was a time of risk-taking and throwing caution into the wind. And as it turns out, it’s also when most people live life on the edge with their money, too. According to a new survey, the average person hits peak financial recklessness at 22-years-old. The poll of 2,000 Americans found that two-thirds admit to not paying nearly enough attention to their finances when they were younger. The average person said they were 25 when they realized it was time to “grow up” when it comes to handling their money. According to the survey, commissioned by Grain for OnePoll, half admit to feeling guilty about spending with abandon, and 44% have had “bad credit” at some point in their lives. 43% blame the fact that they didn’t keep a budget for their credit woes, while 37% say impulse spending was a problem for them.
(Impulse spending? No problem for me!)
(I hit peak financial recklessness when I went to college for an arts degree!)
(When I was young, I wanted to grow up to have no money issues. Now that I’m an adult, I have no money AND I have issues…)

CORONAUPDATE:
➢ New research shows that patients who received their annual flu vaccine before contracting coronavirus may have some degree of protection against severe effects associated with COVID-19, such as stroke, sepsis and deep vein thrombosis. Data collected from patients around the world suggests that those who received a flu vaccine prior to being diagnosed with COVID-19 were both less likely to visit an emergency department and less likely to be admitted to an intensive care unit. The researchers noted, however, that the risk of death was not reduced. (Given the wait times at the ERs around here…I’m less likely to visit…COVID or no!)
➢ While many gym-goers rely on energetic music to power themselves through their workout, in South Korea, musical options have been significantly limited under new COVID-19 rules. In addition to the standard restrictions such as social distancing and travel curbs, South Korea has added a requirement that gyms don’t play music faster than 120 beats per minute (bpm) during group exercises such as aerobics and spinning. Health officials say the measure is intended to prevent breathing too fast or splashing sweat toward others. The 120-bpm rule means you can still listen to ‘Eye of the Tiger’ by Survivor, or K-pop sensation BTS’ latest hits like ‘Dynamite’ and ‘Butter’. But Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ – the South Korean hit that went viral all over the world? Sorry, you’re out of luck. (That’s OK. I don’t spin to anything faster than Streisand…)

DID YOU KNOW?
The most curious babies may grow up to become the most intelligent adults, according to a new study. The first-of-its-kind study by the Laboratory for Child Development at Johns Hopkins University found that months-old babies most captivated by magic tricks become the most curious toddlers. And scientists say it could even predict their future intelligence. The findings, which show some youngsters are better at noticing and tracking surprising events than others, raise the possibility that some are better positioned to learn.
