★ The bear is back. Earlier in the week, Ryan Reynolds offered a $5,000 on Twitter for the return of a missing stuffed bear. A Herschel backpack was stolen in Vancouver along with an iPad inside, but it was the bear that owner ‘Mara’ really wanted back, and now that bear has been found! Inside the bear is a voice recording of her mother saying, “I love you I’m proud of you, I’ll always be with you.” Mara’s mother died last year. On Wednesday morning, Reynolds retweeted the news from Mara that the bear had been found. Reynolds’ comment: “Vancouver is awesome.”

★ “Schitt’s Creek” has broken the record for most Emmy nominations given to a comedy series in its final season with 15 nods in total. The show surpassed the previous record of 13 nominations set by “30 Rock” in 2013. “Schitt’s” nominations include one for each of the show’s four leads, including an outstanding lead actor nod for Eugene Levy, a lead actress nod for Catherine O’Hara, a supporting actor nod for Dan Levy, and a supporting actress nod for Annie Murphy. The show also got nominations for directing, and is one of 8 shows nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series.

★ A new digital series is set to use humor to spread awareness about climate change – and it is hosted by The Office’s Rainn Wilson. “An Idiot’s Guide to Climate Change”, which premiered online Tuesday, is a six-part docuseries running on Wilson’s “Soul Pancake” YouTube channel. Climate activist Greta Thunberg will be among the guests as Wilson embarks on what he calls “a life-changing journey from an everyday, well-intentioned but uninformed liberal to strident climate activist.”

★ Drew Barrymore will begin hosting “The Drew Barrymore Show” on CBS later this year – and she has announced a lineup of online programs in a lead-up to the premiere on September 14. In addition to “Drew’s Cookbook Club” and “Drew’s Movie Nite”, she’ll also be taking fans behind the scenes with “The Art of the Interview” and “The Making of the Drew Barrymore Show”. Barrymore says she plans to take people through her ”journey” from when she started work on the chat show, through to its launch.

• Drake — has beaten Madonna’s record for the most Top 10 hits in US chart history. He has two tracks in the top 10 of this week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart in collaboration with DJ Khaled: ‘Popstar’ at #3 and ‘Greece’ at #8, bringing his total to 40, and overtaking Madonna’s 38.
• BTS – revealed in a livestream that they will release a new English single next month, and a new album is also on the way. The new digital single will be released on Korean and international streaming sites on Friday, August 21.
• Pearl Jam, R.E.M., The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Aerosmith and more — have joined forces with the Artists Rights Alliance to demand that political parties “establish clear policies requiring campaigns to seek the consent of featured recording artists, songwriters, and copyright owners before using their music in a political or campaign setting.” The Village People, Neil Young, and Tom Petty’s estate have all recently called out the Donald Trump campaign for using their songs without permission.
• AC/DC – Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider says their much-anticipated new album “has been recorded” but had to be “delayed” because of the pandemic. He previously stated that the album will use some parts recorded by guitarist Malcolm Young prior to his death. Now, Snider calls it “a miracle of technology” and “the ultimate ‘one more time.'”
• Merle Haggard — Sam Rockwell is in talks to star in a biopic of the legendary country musician. Rockwell will reportedly do his own singing for the flick, which will be mainly set during the 1990s.
• Randy Travis – Although his voice was silenced by a stroke in 2013, a previously unreleased recording was released yesterday. • Brad Paisley — leads the “Quarantine All-Stars” in a new instrumental for coronavirus relief for musicians through the MusiCares Foundation. The ‘Quarantine’ video features an intro from Luke Bryan. According to reports, you may have to PAY to use Twitter by the end of this year. CEO Jack Dorsey said during a call with investors last week that it’s preparing to explore how it could institute some sort of paid subscription model, saying “you will likely see some tests this year.” At this point, most of the $3.5 billion in revenue it generates per year comes from ads, and Dorsey says the company is actively looking at finding additional revenue streams. That would mean making us pay. The most obvious move would be to invite people to pay to avoid seeing sponsored tweets on their timeline, but that doesn’t mean that an “every user pays” system isn’t being considered.
(How about I pay not to see tweets from trolls instead?)

CHEW ON THIS:
The future of taking prescription drugs could be in chewing gum, thanks to a new robotic mouth. Stay with me here. Researchers at the University of Bristol say medicated chewing gum is a very effective way of getting drugs into a patient’s body. The problem is, there’s no proven method of testing how well gum releases medicine into the mouth. Now, the team from Bristol is testing to see how well a motorized mouth does the job. The robo-jaw comes with its own teeth, mimics human chewing motions, and even produces artificial saliva. The researchers say the “mouth” allows them to measure how much chemical is being released into the saliva. Their invention will help limit danger to human test subjects while scientists experiment with drug doses in gum, and save pharmaceutical companies money.
(While they’re at it, can they also study why gum loses its flavor in the first 5 minutes?)
(And as a bonus, the robo-jaw hasn’t ONCE left its used gum under a chair!)

GREEN DISHES:
Which is best for the environment – using a modern energy-efficient dishwasher, or doing your dishes in the sink? Researchers from the University of Michigan investigated and found that dishwashers are generally better, but not if you use a certain method of handwashing. Their recommendations are to avoid “pre-rinsing” and to deselect “heated dry” when using a dishwasher. The worst method for dishwashing is the “running tap” method of manual dishwashing where the dishes are washed under a constant stream of hot water, using more power and water than any other method. But here’s the best method that’s even better than the dishwasher: manual washing using a “two basin” method, where the dishes are washed in a sink of hot water and then rinsed in a sink of cold water. This method cuts emissions by 66%, and is 18% more efficient than using a dishwasher.
(It’s funny…I always used that “running hot water” method until I got my own place…)
(As far as I’m concerned, the best method is the “No , you can’t go out to play until you’ve done the dishes” method…)

The Canadian government has unveiled a new tool which allows Canadians to assess the risk level of contracting COVID-19 while participating in different activities. Ordering take-out food, camping, grocery shopping and outdoor exercising are considered low risk. Medium risk activities include going to the movies, visiting a hair salon or outdoor patio, getting in a taxi, shopping at a mall, and attending a wedding or funeral. Here are the highest-risk activities and places:

Scientists expect that listeners will hear a “pop-pop-pop” sound every time the laser fires in search of organic compounds, or the building blocks of life.
