★ You could be forgiven for thinking that “Welcome to Wrexham” may be coming to an end. After Season 1 introduced Wrexham A.F.C. as underdogs that desperately needed a promotion in order to survive, Season 2 ended with the soccer team getting it in a nail-biting match, winning 5 Emmys along the way. Perfect story arc. But the team’s owners, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds say they’ll continue making the show for as long as they can. In an interview, McElhenney said: “It is just a wellspring of story” and when someone tells him “Eventually, you’re going to run out of stories”, he responds: “Really? Because we haven’t for thousands of years.”

★ Goldie Hawn has revealed that she and Kurt Russel were victims of 2 home invasions within 4 months. In an interview with Kelly Ripa, she said that she and Russell had gone out to dinner, only to find their belongings ransacked once she went to bed. Months later, she heard a loud “boom” upstairs, and discovered later that someone had tried to enter the bedroom. Now, she says she is “never without a guard.”

WHAT SCIENTISTS ARE SAYING ABOUT SHOPPING:
❑ A new report has concluded that going cashless leads to spending more. With the popularity of credit cards, mobile wallets, and Buy-Now-Pay-Later schemes, more and more consumers are ditching physical money for the convenience of cashless payments. University of Adelaide researchers said they were surprised to find that “cashless payments do not necessarily lead to greater tips or donations, in comparison to cash”, but consumers do indeed spend more when using digital payment methods compared to cash. The researchers said that knowing this can help empower us to make more informed purchasing decisions. (Well, they just informed me that I love spending more money…as long as I’m spending it on me, and not someone else!)
❑ Healthy choices at the grocery store inevitably lead to unhealthy ones, and vice-versa. Research published in The Journal of Retailing details how the relative healthiness of an initial product choice was inversely related to the relative healthiness of the next choice when shopping. In other words, a healthier food choice was typically followed by an unhealthier one, and an unhealthy choice is generally followed by selecting something healthier. While the researchers didn’t assess why we seem to feel the need to go through this “balancing act” at the supermarket, they did say that being aware of it could help shoppers make more consistently healthy choices. (Lately I’ve been selecting an “on sale” choice, followed by another “on sale” choice – purely out of necessity!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ Despite hiring more than 100 new workers, the Pittsburgh Department of Public Works still has not turned on the public water fountains – and may not get to most of them all summer. The city has more than 200 water fountains, which are normally turned on in late April, but none of those 100 new city workers are capable of activating the waterworks. The Public Works Director told a TV station that currently, just one plumber works for the city. Because the city hasn’t been able to fill the other 2 vacant plumber positions, the fountains remain dry, while that worker works on filling pools and other duties. When those jobs are complete, he’ll start turning on fountains, until the time comes to begin turning them off for fall. (The good news? He’s also toilet-trained…!)
➢ A 6-year-old tabby cat has officially received his honorary degree from Vermont State University. Max was given the distinction as part of the institution’s Class of 2024. Max has been visiting the Castleton campus ever since his owner began letting him out of the house, which is nearby. Maurice Ouimet, the dean of admissions and enrollment services, said the “very affectionate” Max is usually the first to greet him in the morning, and comes inside during winter. Max’s daily routine also includes parking himself outside an academic building as students come and go, purring and climbing on their backpacks as they take selfies. Max also greets visitors who come for tours, as if he “has a job to do in welcoming people to the campus”, Ouimet said. An Instagram post says “The Board of Trustees of the Vermont State Cat-leges has bestowed upon Max Dow the prestigious title of Doctor of Litter-ature, complete with all the catnip perks, scratching post privileges, and litter box responsibilities that come with it.” (Max “poo-pooed” that last part…) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/cjyj68mw

⇒ Marriage is taking your wife out for dinner while driving around until you both keep asking each other “Where do want to eat?” until you slowly swerve into oncoming traffic. – Tony P.
⇒ Get married so you can yell something to your spouse, and they can yell “What?” ten times from another room instead of walking 25 feet. – sixfootcandy
⇒ My husband obviously loves my style, anytime I say “How do I look?” He doesn’t even have to look at me, he just replies “Gorgeous.” – Darla
⇒ It’s that time of year, arguing with my husband over the ceiling fan speed. I like “light breeze.” He prefers “F4 tornado.” – Sarcastic Mommy
⇒ Living on a prayer. But it’s me every time I get into my wife’s car trying to make it to a gas station before I run out of gas. – Dadman Walking
⇒ Me: [on deathbed]. Wife: It’s probably just allergies. – Rodney Lacroix

DID YOU KNOW?
In what might be a sign of the times, Costco is now selling driveway security bollards, aimed at preventing auto theft. The TikTok account “CostcoFindsCanada” recently shared a video that shows a set of manual retractable bollards, for sale for $569.99. The bollards, which are vertical steel posts, are branded with the logo of “Ontario Bollards”. The video prompted a mixed reaction on social media, with some commenters questioning how the bollards would perform in the winter, and others noting that it’s “crazy that we need this now.” (Hmmm…Might also be good for keeping the teens home after I go to bed…or keeping them out!) BS CHRONOMETER 06.14.24

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Bourbon Day”, a day to raise a glass of the sweetened amber spirit to celebrate the splendor of this great American whiskey. Most recipes use about 70% corn, which gives it its nickname of ‘corn whiskey’. Although the origin of the name ‘bourbon’ is unclear, contenders include Bourbon County in Kentucky and Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
• “Family History Day”, a day to ‘share the folklore, legends and myths of your family tree’.
(This message brought to you by ancestory.com)
• “Strawberry Shortcake Day”. Either on a shortcake biscuit or on a sponge cake, strawberry shortcake is an easy and delicious summertime dessert.
• “World Blood Donor Day”, dedicated to thanking and celebrating blood donors. It occurs on the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, who created the ABO blood group system, which is still used today. (Whenever I’m sad, I just read my blood donor ID. It says “B positive”!)
• “American Flag Day”, commemorating the adoption of the ‘Stars & Stripes’ as the flag of the United States, which took place on June 14, 1777. National Flag Day was established by an act of Congress in 1949.
• “Pop Goes the Weasel Day”, celebrating the rhyme you’ve known since childhood, and the tune that sticks in your head every time it’s played by an ice cream truck . . . (The definition of anticipation? The look on a kid’s face when hearing that song while winding up a Jack in the Box!)
• “International Bath Day”. On this date, Archimedes, a Greek scientist and mathematician, was taking a bath when he noticed that the water level rose when he got in, and it occurred to him that the volume of an object could be measured by submerging it in water.

SATURDAY:
• “Fly a Kite Day”, on the anniversary of the date in 1752 when Benjamin Franklin flew a kite in a thunderstorm, with the intent of proving that lightning was caused by a discharge of electricity. It’s handy that today is also . . .
• “Global Wind Day”, a day for promoting wind, its power, and the possibilities it holds to change our world. (Keep your ‘wind’ jokes to yourself!)
• “Worldwide Day of Giving”, when you’re encouraged to do one of 3 simple activities: Give a stranger $10, volunteer, or donate $10. Then, share your story and inspire others to do the same!
• “Lobster Day”. In the past 100 years, lobsters have gone from being ‘peasant food’ to a delicacy. There are many ways to enjoy lobster, but the most popular cooking methods are boiling, baking, steaming, and grilling. (No wonder they have “shellfish steamed issues”!)
• “Nature Photography Day”, started in 2005 by the North American Photography Association, to salute a favorite hobby of camera buffs. (There is a big difference between photographing someone in ‘nature’ and ‘au naturel’. Be careful.)
• “Smile Power Day”, recognizing the 2nd-best thing you can do with your lips. (After whistling.)
• “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day”, the 19th annual, when we’re encouraged to show the world that we care about ending elder abuse and neglect, by wearing something purple. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2z8nsw8c
• “Justice for Janitors Day”, They’ve always faced an uphill battle to be recognized for the important work they do for public health and safety, and many are paid close to minimum wage. Today is to help them win better working conditions, respect at work, and to raise industry standards for all cleaners.

SUNDAY:
• “Father’s Day”, celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in June in about 90 countries, as a day to honor Dad and appreciate all he does. Many other countries have a day for dad at other times in the year. The first observance of a “Father’s Day” was on July 5, 1908, in a church in Fairmont, West Virginia. (***See “How Dad Are You?”, below***)
• “Fresh Veggies Day”, urging us to eat healthy by including fresh veggies with every meal and snack. Better still, be a vegetarian for a day. Your body will like it. (My top 5 favorite vegetables: 1. Mashed potatoes. 2. Lettuce.)
• “Fudge Day”, celebrating the ooey-gooey treat that can be inhaled warm or cold. Fudge is said to be a result of the late-night cravings of Vassar College girls in the early 20th century.
• “International Day of the African Child”, initiated by the Organization of African Unity in 1991. It honors those who participated in the Soweto Uprising on this date in 1976. In South Africa, it’s celebrated as “Youth Day”.
• “World Sea Turtle Day”, to highlight the importance of sea turtles. Not only are they beautiful, they show incredible perseverance and resiliency – after all, they’ve been nesting on beaches for millions of years.
• “Vinegar Day”, this common household product brightens many salads, is used in canning, and can shine up a window, too! Varieties include: Apple cider * Balsamic * Beer * Cane * Coconut * Date * Distilled vinegar * East Asian black * Flavored vinegar * Fruit * Honey * Job’s tears * Kiwifruit * Kombucha * Malt * Palm * Raisin* Rice * Spirit vinegar * Sherry vinegar * White * Wine

BULL’S BITS

BS WHACK FACTS:
✓ More than 80% of Earth’s oceans are unmapped, unobserved, and unexplored.
✓ 1.3 million Earths could fit inside the sun. 5 BILLION suns could fit inside the largest star ever observed.
✓ Seats in movie theaters have only had cup holders since the ’80s.
✓ Another term for nieces or nephews is “niblings”.
✓ Father’s Day is the 4th most popular day for sending cards.
✓ Germany’s twist on Father’s Day is called Männertag. Instead of breakfast in bed, in some parts of the country, men pile wagons high with beer and set off on long, boozy jaunts through town.
