BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Nickelodeon has revealed a star-studded list of nominees for its annual Kids’ Choice Awards. Leading the pack with 6 noms is Taylor Swift, followed by Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus and Beyoncé, with 4 each. First-time nominees include Halle Bailey, Austin Butler, Sabrina Carpenter, Margot Robbie, Timothée Chalamet, and Luke Combs. Performances and presenters will be announced later. ★ ‘Spock’ has a new enemy. “Star Trek” actor Zachary Quinto was blasted by a Toronto restaurant for allegedly mistreating staff and causing a scene in front of other customers. “Mediterranean-ish bistro” Manita wrote on Instagram: “Zachary Quinto – an amazing Spock, but a terrible customer.” The statement continued, saying Quinto “Yelled at our staff like an entitled child after he didn’t reply to two texts to inform him his table was ready”, and “made our host cry and the rest of our brunch diners uncomfortable.” The restaurant asked Quinto to “take your bad vibes somewhere else” in the future. No comment from Quinto so far.

★ Jennifer Lopez has had a rough time lately — but her comeback might already be underway, judging by the big streaming numbers scored by her new Netflix movie, “Atlas”. She stars as ‘Atlas Shepherd’, and despite terrible reviews, the sci-fi thriller is beating the competition when it comes to viewership. Variety reports that Atlas ran away with the most streams for the 6-day period beginning May 24 — when the movie dropped — to May 30. It saw 1.3 billion minutes watched on Netflix and 11 million views that week, the biggest title on the charts. “Bridgerton” Season 3 took second-place.
-TMZ
★ “House of the Dragon” showrunner Ryan Condal is keeping his word on a promise he made to fans: There will be 5 new dragons in Season 2. In a press conference ahead of the HBO series’ upcoming premiere, Condal pointed out that he made the promise “5½ years ago” … 5 new ones that you haven’t seen before.” The second season will premiere on June 16, based on George R. R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood”, following Westeros on the brink of a civil war.
-TheWrap
★ Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino is getting candid about his struggle with addiction. On Kaitlyn Bristowe’s podcast “Off the Vine,” the “Jersey Shore” star shared that at one point, he was spending $600,000 a year on opioids and cocaine. After dealing with substance abuse in his early 20s, Sorrentino cleaned up and began his career in reality TV, and rebuilt his life, remaining clean and sober “year after year”. But despite his efforts, the 41-year-old said things “took a turn for the worse”, and there were a few “rock bottom” moments between 2010 and 2015, when he began using heroin. He eventually sought help, and says he is 9 years clean and sober.

SHOOTING THE BULL

YOU SNOOZE, YOU LOSE . . . YOUR SPOUSE:
Would your spouse consider a “sleep divorce” if they just couldn’t stand the sound of your snoring any longer? The American Academy of Sleep Medicine says that an estimated one in 3 people regularly sleep in a separate bed from their partner – described as “sleep divorce” – due to snoring and sleep disorders. But the organization says it has a potential answer, that doesn’t involve bunking out on the couch or the guest bedroom. The AASM says a new study shows that the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines is linked with higher levels of relationship satisfaction — and lower levels of relationship conflict. The lead author of the study explained that, as you no doubt know, no one is at their best when they don’t get sufficient sleep. So, by recognizing that if one partner has sleep apnea, it can affect the sleep quality of both, we may be able to actually save marriages by promoting the fact that CPAP machines might be the answer. Sleep apnea is a chronic disease that involves the repeated collapse of the upper airway during sleep, causing stops and gags in airflow – including snoring. CPAP machines help alleviate this by sending air pressure through a mask to keep the throat open during sleep.
(It goes without saying that the fact that poor sleep quality can lead to relationship issues is DEFINITELY NOT news to anyone whose spouse sounds like a revving dragster on a nightly basis! Sorry, hon…)
(My wife proposed a “sleep divorce” long ago. Not because of snoring – because of pizza crumbs!)

A DAD’S LIFE:
❑ Becoming a dad could result in a shorter life, according to new research. A study out of Chicago’s Northwestern University found that fatherhood may take an alarming toll on men’s heart health as they age. The researchers found that cardiovascular health tended to be worse for fathers compared to men without kids. They theorize that the added responsibilities and stresses that come with parenthood make it more challenging for fathers to maintain a healthy lifestyle through habits like exercising regularly and eating nutritious food. (It was the exact opposite for me. It was always: “Well, I can’t get anywhere near the Xbox. I might as well walk the dog!)
❑ A new male birth control gel could soon be a reality. It uses the synthetic hormone Nesterone, an ingredient of the birth control ring (used by women). The UK researchers believe the use of Nesterone makes the new gel work quickly and require less testosterone than previous experimental gels. It is designed to keep men from producing sperm without impacting their sex drive or causing other side effects. The hormonal gel used daily by rubbing it on…the shoulder blades. (Well, at least they didn’t pick an awkward spot!)

SMILE SOURCES:
If I asked you about the things that make you smile, what is the first thing you think of? According to a survey asking exactly that question, the #1 thing that is likely to “turn that frown upside down” is . . . going on a holiday. Bupa Dental Care in the US commissioned the survey of 2,000 adults in the US as part of National Smile Month (which was observed in May), to highlight the benefits of smiling. 46% of respondents agreed that simply having someone smile at them gives them a feeling of happiness, and this positive boost lasts for an average of 13 minutes. The bad news? An experiment found that just 21% of adults return the friendly gesture from a stranger. OK, now the info you’re really waiting for – aside from a vacation, here are the rest of the top 10 things that make us smile:
2. A sunny morning
3. Receiving a kind gesture from someone
4. Receiving a smile from someone
5. A loved one getting good news
6. Doing something that makes someone laugh or smile
7. Receiving a surprise gift
8. Winning money
9. Getting a thank you
10. Sitting in the sun
(#11 must be when you reply to a text scammer with a really sick burn!)
(Wow – I thought for sure that “finding a coupon for something that you were going to buy anyway” would be right up there. What? Just me?)

DID YOU KNOW?
A British man claims to have the world’s oldest cat. Leslie Greenhough’s tortoiseshell kitty, Millie, is 29 years old – and he credits her long life to “lots of treats”. He says the cat, which was born in 1995, has never visited the vet, and eats a mixed diet of chicken and Purina cat food. Greenhough says his kitty is still “a spry little thing”, although “She’s a little deaf now.” Leslie plans to submit Millie to Guinness World Records, which currently lists a 28-year-old cat named Flossie as the world’s oldest.

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Hot Air Balloon Day”, commemorating the first hot air balloon flight, by the Montgolfier Brothers in Annonay, France in 1783. (We’re glad it ‘took off’! I’ll shut up now…)
• World Environment Day”, a thing since 1972. The 2024 theme is “Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience”. These are exceptional times in which nature is sending us a message: To care for ourselves, we must care for nature. LINK:  https://www.worldenvironmentday.global/
• “Gingerbread Day”. The term “gingerbread” originally referred to preserved ginger, later referring to a confection made up of honey and spices. While most are familiar with the gingerbread house at Christmas, you might also want to try some delicious gingerbread bread, cake, bars, biscuit and cookie recipes that are perfect any time of the year.
• “Apple II Day”, celebrating this date in 1977, when the Apple II computer was released. A hulking beige mammoth with 4KB of RAM (upgradeable to a whopping 48KB), the Apple II defined the company for a generation. At $1,298, it cost the equivalent of 3 iPads today — even though it seemed a total bargain at the time.
• Attitude Day”. Attitudes are contagious … is yours worth catching? A day to appreciate those whose attitude makes those around them happy. (It’s our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its outcome.)
• “Sausage Roll Day”, Originally a British treat, they have developed a following across the pond, as more and more of us are beginning to understand the delicious appeal of these mouthwatering snacks.
• “Ketchup Day”. In 1812, American scientist James Mease documented the first tomato-based ketchup recipe. It also included sugar, spices, and vinegar, the same base recipe we know and love today. Some ketchup facts…
→ Tomatoes were once considered poisonous because of their classification with the nightshade family or Solanaceae. These plants tend to contain high doses of harmful toxins, but it was later discovered that tomatoes lack these toxins, and are edible.
→ Ketchup was used for medicinal purposes before the 19th century, when many people used tomatoes to treat indigestion and diarrhea.
→The word ‘ketchup’ became popular during the 19th century and has been the standard name of the condiment since. However, some areas in the southern US still use the word ‘catsup’.
→ Nearly 97% of Americans have ketchup in their homes. And it is so popular that astronauts use it in space.
