Tomorrow’s Show Prep Today!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Anna Faris and fiancé Michael Barrett have tied the knot! She revealed on her podcast that they eloped. While Faris didn’t share many details about the nuptials, she did say: “It was at a local courthouse up in Washington State, it was great.” Faris began dating the cinematographer in 2017 after working on her film “Overboard”. The two were first spotted together that September — a month after Faris and ex-husband Chris Pratt announced their split after eight years of marriage.

★ Bette Midler, Joni Mitchell, Lorne Michaels, Berry Gordy and Justino Díaz are the latest crop of honorees up for Kennedy Center Honors, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has announced. The five will be celebrated on Dec. 5, which will be the second event this year after the previous crop of honorees was recognized in a hybrid live and virtual tribute in May. The 44th Kennedy Center Honors ceremony will be broadcast in a prime-time special on CBS at a date to still be determined.

★ Kevin O’Leary has told an Ontario court that he does not recall if his wife Linda consumed alcohol in the hours before a boat crash that killed 2 people and injured several others. The celebrity businessman and star of “Shark Tank” testified Wednesday about the day leading up to the Aug. 2019 crash on Lake Joseph, north of Toronto, and the immediate hours after. O’Leary said that he did not see the other boat involved in the late-night crash until seconds before the collision, and did not immediately know what had been struck. Linda O’Leary has pleaded not guilty to a charge of careless operation of a vessel.

★ Timothy Hutton will not face Canadian justice for an alleged 1983 sexual assault after prosecutors decided to close the decades-old case on the Oscar winner. The then-22-year-old actor was accused in a November 2019 filing of attacking a then-14-year-old in a local hotel room while another man looked on and participated. While Hutton was in Vancouver 38 years ago making the “Iceman movie”, he has always insisted he never assaulted the woman. In fact, Hutton says he was the subject of an extortion attempt for millions of dollars.

MORE FRIDAY FOOD FUN:
Quick! What is the best part of a Drumstick ice cream sundae cone? The last bite, of course. That’s when you get to enjoy that delicious chunk of chocolate hidden inside the end of the cone. Well, in another incredible feat of American junk food ingenuity, someone has gone ahead and packaged just those, and if you want, you can buy a bag for yourself. “Muddy Bites” promise to give you the “best bite, over and over again”. ‘Muddy Bites’ (the company), which has grown from a 2019 Kickstarter campaign, says they have turned the best part of the sundae cone into a bite sized snack. They are available in 2 delicious flavors: milk chocolate and dark chocolate. Online reaction has been just as you’d imagine, with one person writing: “This is what I call ‘stupid brilliance’.” Get yours at MuddyBites.com
LINK: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CRhQog3pxv2/?utm_medium=share_sheet
(Never mind that, I want to be the guy whose job it is to eat the rest of the cones before they go in the bag!)
(The problem is that the last bite of a sundae cone isn’t that great unless there’s melted ice cream all over it. And all over your arm!)
(It’s too bad that whenever someone comes up with a great idea like this, that they have to go and ruin it with a “dark chocolate” option!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ An enterprising Australian woman has been fined for breaching lockdown after having a drone deliver cigarettes at the hotel where she was quarantined. The bizarre smuggling scheme came to light when the drone was observed by an observant hotel employee dropping off a pack of smokes to a woman on a balcony of the Crown Plaza hotel on the Gold Coast. It is believed that a man was operating the dart-delivery system from outside the hotel. The nicotine fiend has been slapped with a $1,300 fine for breaching COVID-19 lockdown. (Considering what smokes cost these days, I think she actually SAVED money!)
➢ A man with his heart in the right place says he is now “stuck” with 10,000 T-shirts featuring a glaring typo after trying to capitalize on the #FreeBritney movement. Karl Baxter, a managing director at Wholesale Clearance UK, bought 10,000 shirts, which he intended to sell to Britney Spears fans and donate a percentage of the profit to her cause. But when the clothing arrived at the warehouse, he realized that the shirts say “#FreeBrittany,” spelled like the French region instead of the singer’s first name, ‘Britney’. He was unable to return the merchandise, so he plans to sell the mislabeled shirts at a reduced price. He hopes fans will “overlook the error”. (Or he could GIVE them away. Then they’d be FREE BRITTANY shirts – literally!)

STRANGE SPORTS THAT WERE ONCE PART OF THE SUMMER OLYMPICS:
☞ Tug of War:  It was an event at 5 games between 1900-20. If neither team succeeded to pull the other over the line after 5 minutes, a winner was declared based on who performed the best.
☞ Club Swinging:  An event twice, in 1904 and 1932. Participants would perform a routine by swinging clubs that looked like bowling balls.
☞ Running Deer:  In the early 1900s, competitors shot at a deer-shaped target which would move, or “run,” a distance of 75 feet.
☞ Dueling Pistols:  In 1906, this bizarre event saw competitors shoot wax bullets at human-shaped targets dressed in long coats from a 20 or 30-metre distance.
☞ Fencing With Sticks:  A one-time event in 1904, “Singlestick” was similar to fencing, but the weapon was a rounded wooden stick, about 34 inches long.
☞ Plunge for Distance:  In 1904, this event saw competitors dive into a pool, then try not to move at all until one minute was up, or until they naturally floated to the surface.
☞ Solo Synchronized Swimming:  Between 1984-92, the intent was for the swimmer to synchronize their movements to music. The solo Olympic sport has since evolved into a team effort now known as Artistic Swimming. (But the very idea of “solo” synchronized swimming must have raised some eyebrows at the time!)

DID YOU KNOW?
“Clippy”, Microsoft’s iconic but polarizing virtual assistant, which first appeared in Windows 97 as a small paper clip to help Microsoft Office users, is coming back. Microsoft, which gave Clippy the boot in 2007, has announced plans to replace its standard paperclip emoji with an image of the big-eyed, happy helper Clippy. The move is part of a refresh of 1,800 emojis across all Microsoft apps and services, which will roll out later this year. (“It looks like they’re bringing me back. Would you like to help stop this? Yes/No”)

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Hot Enough For Ya? Day”, when it should be legal throw a water balloon at anyone who asks you that overused, plain-as-the-end-of-your-sweat-dripping-nose question. (For maximum effect, the word “for” should be pronounced “fer”)
• “Vanilla Ice Cream Day”, celebrating the favorite ice cream flavor of the masses … by far. (***See ‘Today’s Firsts’, below***)
• “Gorgeous Grandma Day”, everybody thinks that their grandma is gorgeous – so what could be better than an entire day devoted to acknowledging that fact? Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are well known, so Gorgeous Grandma Day is a natural progression.
• “International Yada, Yada, Yada Day”, “Yada yada yada” is the phrase used as a way of skipping over uninteresting and/or irrelevant details. Comedian Lenny Bruce used it, and there are records of it being used in 1940s vaudeville. But it was in the 1990s, in the TV show “Seinfeld”, that “yada yada yada” really became a ubiquitous catchphrase. “The Yada Yada” was the name of the 153rd episode of the sitcom.
• “Peanut Butter and Chocolate Day”, they’ve been an undeniably necessary combination since each met the other. Whether you’re drooling over Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or nomming down on delicious peanut butter and chocolate ice cream, this is a combination that is guaranteed to make your mouth happy.

SATURDAY-
• “Cousins Day”, to honor cousins who are living and pay homage to those who aren’t. (You might as well enjoy them, because you’re stuck with them, and there’s nothing you can do about it!)
• “Drive-Thru Day”, honoring the businesses that allow you to shop without leaving your vehicle. There are drive-thru banks, coffee shops, fast-food restaurants, florists, ice cream bars, liquor stores, marriage chapels (Las Vegas), and pharmacies. What’s the weirdest you’ve seen? Ours is a funeral home.
• “Tell an Old Joke Day”, a good excuse to dust off your best chicken-crossing-the-road zinger (***and ask listeners for their best jokes … but only if they’re under 5-years-old***) What do you call a bear with no teeth? A gummy bear! What do you call cheese that isn’t yours? Nacho cheese!
• “Tequila Day”, celebrating Mexico’s national booze that’s becoming increasingly popular in other drinks beside margaritas. But we still like it the old-fashioned way – a little salt, a slice of lime and … ay caramba!
• “Amelia Earhart Day”, honoring the famous aviation pioneer who was born on this date in 1897. During an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937, she disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. Theories and conspiracies still exist about the cause of her disappearance.

SUNDAY-
• “Hot Fudge Sundae Day”, an annual excuse to indulge in this decadent hot n’cold dessert.
• “Merry-Go-Round Day” (or “Carousel Day”), the anniversary of the mechanical carousel’s patent in 1871 by William Schneider of Davenport, Iowa. He did not invent it, however. Carousel rides may go back as far as 500 AD. (I like to call it a ‘horse tornado’!)
• “Wine and Cheese Day”. Oh, all right … if we have to.
• “Culinarians Day”, a special day to salute anyone who cooks. (I cook. But no one would call me a culinarian!)
• “Thread the Needle Day”, a day for those who sew. The term “thread the needle”, also means to either walk a fine and difficult line between two things or issues, or to do something difficult.
• “Red Shoe Day”, in memory of Australian Lyme disease patient, Theda Myint, who died on July 25, 2013. This annual remembrance since 2014 is not only for Theda, but for all those lost to Lyme and other invisible illnesses worldwide.
