BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
[***UPDATE***] ★ Bob Newhart, whose stammering, deadpan unflappability carried him to stardom, has died at age 94. His publicist said he died in LA on Thursday morning after a series of short illnesses, and called the star’s passing an “end of an era in comedy.” Over the course of 5 decades, Newhart’s popularity began with the Grammy-winning comedy album “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart”, and continued as he led 2 two top-rated sitcoms (“The Bob Newheart Show” and “Newheart”), plus a regular role in “The Big Bang Theory”, and as a supporting actor in movies including “Catch-22”, “Cold Turkey” and “Elf.”

[***PREVIEW FOR CONTENT***] ★ Britney Spears is telling Ozzy Osbourne to…hush, just stop. She fired back after Ozzy and his family—including wife Sharon and son Jack addressed the dancing videos she posts online. In a lengthy note, Britney compared herself to Kate Beckinsale for continuing to do what she loves, despite her age, and added: “Number 1, I hardly ever dance, and number 2, I’m not poor at all!!!” She continued, saying: “I’m going to do a photoshoot with Kate, and tell the Osbourne family, who is the most boring family known to mankind, to kindly F*** off!”

★ Joe and Anthony Russo are assembling a team — again. The Russo Bros. are in early talks to return to Marvel Studios to direct not just one, but the next 2 “Avengers movies”, say sources. That ends a months-long, high stakes search by the studio for filmmakers to oversee the 5th and 6th Avengers films. Multiple names were in contention, including “Deadpool & Wolverine” director Shawn Levy, who was offered the gig. Sources say talks are in the early stages. The Russo Bros. have directed 4 of Marvel’s biggest and best-regarded movies, including 2 Avengers films.

★ Riki Lindhome and Fred Armisen are married — and have been since 2022. Not only did the couple tie the knot two years ago, but they have been raising son Keaton together since his March 2022 arrival via surrogate. Lindhome told People that she was expecting the little one via a donated sperm and egg when she started to develop feelings for Armisen. The longtime friends were filming “Wednesday” at the time and moved “fast”, getting married 3 months later. She says that their journey to “insta-family” was a “natural evolution.”

★ Kelsey Grammer’s ‘Dr. Frasier Crane’ will return to radio station KACL this fall in Season 2 of the Paramount+ revival, “Frasier.” An upcoming episode will feature guest appearances from many of the original sitcom’s cast members — including Dan Butler as ‘Bob “Bulldog” Briscoe’, Edward Hibbert as ‘Gil Chesterton’ and Harriet Sansom Harris as Frasier’s agent ‘Bebe Glazer’. The news came the same day that Season 1 of “Frasier” scored 3 Emmy nods. The sophomore season will premiere Sept. 19.

It took 14 minutes to send the song about 158 million miles via radio antennas usually used for missions to track spacecraft. TALKIN’ ‘BOUT YOUR GENERATION:
⇒ It would appear that Gen Z has had it up to here with dating apps, and these days, they’d rather have a chance encounter in an unconventional setting as a way of meeting their match. A DatingAdvice.com survey found that the preferred methods of finding someone to date among those aged 18-27 include at protests, at funerals – and in virtual reality. Burned out by fruitless dating app searches, 20-somethings are also searching for love in the fruit aisles of supermarkets, or hoping to meet a future partner at a social gathering, a bookstore, or a local club or class. (Does no one try to pick up girls at the gym anymore?)
⇒ What will Zoomers “wreck” next? Millennials are accusing Gen Z of ruining…the ‘Macarena’. A TikTok video with over 9 million views claims that Zoomers are massacring the iconic dance routine that goes with the 1990s Los Del Rio hit, by adding their own moves. Aghast, Arleth Lopez says in her vid: “Yo I feel so old, why are they dancing the Macarena like this?” The classic choreography involved outstretching arms one at a time, flipping the palms over, and crossing your arms across the chest. But in the clip posted, some 20-somethings are seen literally putting their own spin on the Macarena by rolling their arms, turning, and then doing a wave motion. Commenters were quick to jump aboard, with one writing: “THAT IS NOT THE MACARENA”, and another gasping: “WAIT WHAT WAS THATTTTT”. (That’s exactly what I said about the ORIGINAL dance!) NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ Colorado’s Denver International Airport revealed the most unusual things to pass through its lost and found over the past year – and items include elk meat and a circular saw. The airport, which averages more than 200,000 travelers per day, receives almost 200 lost and found items daily. Some of the other odd items that have been turned into the airport’s lost and found are: A forklift battery, burial urns – and dogs found in the parking garage. By the way, a recent survey of European hotels found some of the most unusual lost and found items left behind in guest rooms included a full clown costume, a glass eye, dentures and multiple prosthetic limbs. (What kind of clown leaves his costume behind? Oh…right. A naked one…!)
➢ Minor League Baseball team the Lake County Captains has installed a row of toilets…behind home plate. The Cleveland Guardians-affiliated High-A team in Eastlake OH now features “Roto Rooter Row” at its home park, a line of 8 “high-end toilet seats” that are available for fans to watch the game from, at a premium price. With the purchase of these “thrones”, fans have access to specialized reading material, and a “bathroom attendant” named Horatio, who is there to cater to your every need, whether that be gum, mouthwash, or a comb. And these VIP seats are available at a reasonable cost: Just $25 per (a-hem!) seat. Or you can win the use of one of them for a game by taking part in the “Roto-Rooter Plunger Challenge”, where 2 people go head-to-head to see who can launch a plunger toward a target. (It’s a shame, though, when you have to leave the toilet to go to the restroom!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/bdhrffkh

10. 😎 Smiley face with sunglasses
(What emoji do you wish you’d never see again – besides that stupid “poo” one?)

DID YOU KNOW?
New research out of Scotland says that cyclists have a 47% lower risk of early death and a 10% lower risk of hospitalization for any reason, than commuters who drive or take the train. The study followed more than 82,000 UK residents over 18 years, who ranged in age from 16-74 at the beginning. Commuting by bike was associated with a 51% lower risk of dying from cancer, a 24% lower risk of hospitalization for heart disease and a 20% lower risk of being prescribed drugs for mental health problems. (“Wheely” good news?)

BS CHRONOMETER 07.19.24
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Flight Attendant Safety Professionals Day”. In celebration, you’ll notice the Captain has turned on the ‘Fasten Seat Belt’ sign. Please stow your carry-on luggage underneath the seat in front of you or in an overhead bin. Please take your seat, fasten your belt, and make sure your seat back and folding trays are in the full upright position. And please set all personal electronic devices to ‘Airplane Mode’. (And for the love of all that is holy, please, no more ‘singing flight attendant’ viral videos!)
• “Stick Your Tongue Out Day”, for some long-forgotten reason. But now that you have it out, try rolling it into a cylinder … only 1-in-14 of us can do that!
• “Daiquiri Day”. An engineer named Jennings Cox supervised a mine in a Cuban village named Daiquiri in 1898. After work, he and his colleagues would gather at the local bar. One day Cox mixed Bacardi, sugar, and lime into a glass of ice. Named after the Daiquiri mines, the drink became a popular staple in Havana…and beyond.
• “Triple Play Day”, marking the first MLB unassisted triple play, accomplished on this date in 1909 by Neal Ball of the Cleveland Naps. It’s one of the rarest events in baseball. (Even rarer than a fan staying awake for 9 innings?)
• “New Friends Day”, celebrating brand-new friends, those fine and fabulous folks who have recently come into our lives to brighten our days with camaraderie and joy (and make our old friends jealous…).
• “Words With Friends Day”, to celebrate the popular app that became a global sensation. And now we have “Words With Friends 2”…
SATURDAY:
• “Moon Day”, the anniversary of the first crewed lunar landing in 1969. Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first to walk on the Moon. Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin joined him later, while Michael Collins remained orbiting above. (Celebrate how you want, but please don’t do the obvious!) [***A few things you likely didn’t know about the lunar landing: http://tinyurl.com/l5p7kb ]
• “International Chess Day”, observed since 1966, honoring the game that generates challenge, intellectual stimulation, and enjoyment for people of all ages. There are an estimated 605 million regular chess players around the world. And 70% of adults have, at some point, played chess. (Except they play on their tablet now…)
• “Lollipop Day”, celebrating the 1908 invention of the famous candy on a stick. Pieces of hard candy were put on the ends of pencils for kids to nibble much earlier than that, but the treat had no name.
• “Ugly Truck Day”. Sure, a brand new, shiny truck with all the gadgets is a great thing, but there’s something noble about an old, worn, ugly truck. (Or maybe that’s just a guy thing?)
• “Nap Day”. Grab a chaise lounge out in the yard, spread a blanket at the beach, string a hammock between 2 trees, or curl up on your bed under a ceiling fan with the air conditioner cranked. (You had me at “nap”!)
• “Fortune Cookie Day”. Although this fun tradition is more Asian-American than strictly Chinese, it’s an essential ending to a Chinese dinner in most Western countries. Stats show that people believe their fortune cookie is “spot-on” 25% of the time.
• “World Jump Day”. The first World Jump Day took place on July 20, 2006, when German student Torsten Lauschmann claimed to have organized 600 million people in the Western Hemisphere to jump simultaneously — in order to “reset Earth’s orbit and fix global warming” (It turned out to be a hoax ‘art installation’, but, nice thought!)
SUNDAY:
• “Junk Food Day”. If your health wasn’t a factor, which junk food would you chow down on every chance you got — Burgers, Pizza, Hot Dogs, Tacos, Fries, Chocolate? (All of the above?)
• “Tug-of-War Day”, an annual celebration of the sport in which 2 teams hold opposite ends of a large rope, and attempt to pull the other towards them, in order to win. The spectacle has an ancient history all over the world. (…and works best if there’s a mudpit in the middle!)
• “Legal Drinking Age Day”, so if you’re 21, 19, or 18 depending on where you are… Cheers! Because it’s 5 o’clock somewhere!
• “No Pet Store Puppies Day”, initiated by the SPCA to educate us about the connection between pet stores and ‘puppy mills’, commercial dog breeding facilities where the emphasis in on profit, not animal welfare.
• “Invite an Alien to Live with You Day”, celebrating “Mork & Mindy”, the TV show that starred Pam Dawber as ‘Mindy’ and Robin Williams as ‘Mork’, an alien from the planet Ork, whom Mindy invited to live with her. The day takes place on the late Robin Williams’ birthday (1951-2014).
• “Be Someone Day”, challenging everyone to commit to reporting child abuse. The day was founded by Project Harmony to end child abuse and to “bring communities together through education and awareness.”
