★ Nickelodeon sent the internet into a frenzy on Saturday when it apparently outed SpongeBob SquarePants. Referring to LGBTQ pride month, the channel tweeted photos of three characters in rainbow dress, one of which was the guy “who lives in a pineapple under the sea.” Nickelodeon captioned the pics: “Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month.” That resulted in the hashtag #SPONGEBOB GAY trending on Twitter throughout the day. June is internationally recognized as Pride month, though this year the coronavirus forced organizers to cancel most annual queer pride parades.

PLAN ON BEING SPONTANEOUS:
They say the only constant in life is change, but many people do their best to avoid change as much as they can. According to a new study, we should throw our day planners out the window because it looks like spontaneity is the key to happiness. A poll of 2,000 people found that those who consider themselves spontaneous are 40% more likely to see themselves as a happy person. And spontaneous people are also 38% more likely to say they are content and satisfied with their life. How spontaneous are we? 59% of respondents say they’ve made a major life-altering decision spontaneously. Examples given included moving to Europe, quitting a job, ending a marriage and adopting a dog (!!).
(I’m all about spontaneity, as long as it’s meticulously planned…)
(Whenever I start to fell spontaneous, my bank account tells me to calm the heck down!)
(Perfect. From now on, I’ll be spontaneous. Starting tomorrow.)

WE’RE ALL OUR OWN WORST ENEMIES:
New research has found that both men and women have inaccurate ideas of what the opposite sex finds attractive. What they found is that women overestimate a man’s desire for thinness while men believe that women place more importance on muscularity that they actually do. The study, published in the British Journal of Psychology, found that these misconceptions are more apparent in short-term relationships than in long-term relationships. For the study, participants used an app to manipulate images to represent their ideal body types in the opposite sex. They were also asked to manipulate images of same-sex bodies to show what they believed the ideal body type to be and what their ideal body type was, and yes, women placed too much emphasis on how thin they were and men placed too much emphasis on how muscular they were. The authors of the study say this highlights how both sexes suffer from body dissatisfaction, and that correcting these misperceptions may help prevent or treat eating disorders and body dissatisfaction.
(Well, at least now I know that my shocking lack of muscle tone isn’t the reason women won’t talk to me…)
(I’m gonna say that a lot of Tinder users just realized that they wasted a lot of time learning photoshop!)
(The big takeaway for me is that I just learned that women aren’t always right!)

YOU’LL BE FONDA THIS:
Yet another craze of the ’80s and ’90s has returned. That’s in addition to the Tamagotchi, which you may have heard about yesterday. Ladies and gentlemen, would you please welcome back…ankle weights! That’s right, ankle weights are cool again, thanks to Instagram. With group workouts a no-no these days due to the pandemic, ankle weights have re-emerged as the latest “it” accessory. They’re perfect for socially-distant walking, and for at-home workouts. And the newest ones are designed to look sleek, bright and brilliant on your Instagram profile. Google searches for ankle weights have nearly tripled since this time last year. Many designs can also be worn on the wrist. Experts say that adding 1 or 2-pound weights can increase your heart rate by 30%.
(Don’t I know THAT…!)
(Or, you could save a few bucks and just wear wet socks!)
(I have ankle weights. Except I call them “cankles”…)

DID YOU KNOW?
A study has found that hip and knee replacements have an unexpected benefit – they bolster marriages. Research from McGill University in Montreal found that while patients are usually thrilled with the results of their joint replacement, their spouses say the biggest benefit post-surgery is the ability to carry on with social and leisure activities with their partner. Other benefits included no longer witnessing the patient suffering, a diminished caregiver burden and a sense of independence to resume their normal life.
