• “Cinderella Man” (PG-13 Drama): Russell Crowe stars in the Ron Howard-directed true story of Depression-era fighter Jim Braddock, who defeated heavyweight champ Max Baer in a 15-round slugfest in 1935. Renée Zellweger & Paul Giamatti (“Sideways”) co-star. Crowe dislocated his shoulder while training for boxing sequences, which delayed filming 2 months. Shot in various Toronto locations including The Bay (imitating Madison Square Garden’s exterior) and Maple Leaf Gardens.
• “Lords of Dogtown” (PG-13 Action): Heath Ledger & Emile Hirsch star in the story of a grubby group of ’70s California surfers from a tough Venice Beach neighborhood who skateboard in empty swimming pools and become known as the ‘Z-Boys’. The same story was told in the 2002 documentary “Dogtown and Z-Boys”.
TRUST SERUM:
University of Zurich researchers have discovered that just one whiff of a brain-penetrating hormone called ‘oxytocin’ will encourage you to trust someone completely. Oxytocin plays a role in the bonding between mother and suckling infant; it helps you feel that you know someone you have met before, and it plays a powerful role in romantic love and desire. In experiments, the Swiss scientists found that just a few molecules of the stuff in the nostrils makes people more inclined to trust a friend, business partner – even a stranger. (Let the black market begin.)

Facing a general decline in the number of priests it’s attracting, the Roman Catholic Church in Britain is set to use posters in London’s subway system seeking novitiates. LOUNGING IN LAGER:
The Starkenber Beer Myth Resort in Austria’s Tyrol region is offering vacationers a new attraction – the chance to swim in a pool containing 42,000 pints of beer! In all, the resort has filled seven 13-ft-long pools with suds, claiming that beer baths help to heal various skin maladies. But bathing in booze is not without problems – some guests are said to be inhaling mouthfuls of the stuff … on purpose! (Poor Gunther is a hurtin’ machine this morning … last night he had a 6-hour bath.)

Within a couple of years, your saliva in a cup at the dentist’s office may provide the basis for an analysis of your risk of developing oral cancer. And experts say ‘spit tests’ may also be used in future to detect risk for other diseases, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, Alzheimer’s and rheumatoid arthritis. HOW WORDS AFFECT SMELLS:
Researchers have found that describing a scent with pleasant words may actually cause the brain to perceive the smell more positively. For instance, we perceive the same scent as more pleasant if it is labeled ‘cheddar cheese’ rather than ‘body odor’. In fact, MRIs reveal that the brain responds similarly to the label ‘cheddar cheese’ whether it’s actual cheese scent or simply ‘clean air’ described that way. That’s great news for restaurateurs and ad copywriters! (Yeah, that’s why we’re calling the aroma in the studio this morning ‘fresh-baked cookie’.)
