New & Improved BS – Now With a More Refreshing Aroma!
BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
TODAY in Phoenix court, aging country singer Glen Campbell is due to be sentenced to 10 days in the slammer for DUI and leaving the scene of an accident (sentencing was delayed so he could perform at the “CMA Music Festival” in Nashville) . . . Producers may pull the plug on a controversial new Nicole Kidman movie called “Birth” in which she plays a widow who gets romantic with a 10-year-old boy she believes is the reincarnation of her dead husband – in a bathtub . . . Actress Bridget Moynahan (“Sex & the City’s” ‘Natasha’) has reportedly become engaged to Super Bowl-winning New England Patriot QB Tom Brady after a torrid 6 months of dating . . . Word is actor Christian Slater was shocked when he received a credit card bill for the services of lap dancers during a trip to a London club LAST WEEK to the tune of – $14,400 . . . Tom Cruise has helped open another detox center in Long Island and plans to open several more THIS YEAR, but critics say the centers are actually a gateway into Scientology . . . Actor Adam Sandler has received stitches after a surfing accident in Hawaii sent him to hospital with his head split open . . . 33-year-old “Rush Hour” director Brett Ratner & 22-year-old tennis ace Serena Williams are an item, he reportedly showering she with oodles of expensive jewelry (hey, wouldn’t she have a lot more moolah than him?).
BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Rush – The Naples FL battery trial of guitarist Alex Lifeson and his son has been delayed 3 months to SEPTEMBER 13th at the request of defence attorneys.
• Madonna – Word is she’s asked Britney Spears to sing with her TOMORROW night at the first of the 6 “re-Invention Tour” concerts in NYC, and insiders say they’ll stage a replay of their infamous “MTV Video Music Awards” kiss.
• Avril Lavigne – At the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s charity auction on eBay, you can win lunch with her … or Nick Lachey (and get clawed by Jessica Simpson).
• Lenny Kravitz – He, Janet Jackson & model Heidi Klum are among the founding members of the ‘Setai Club’, a new members-only resort opening in South Beach FL with branches slated for other locations worldwide.
TODAY’S VIDEO RELEASES:
• “50 First Dates” (Romantic Comedy – DVD): Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore star together for the first time since “The Wedding Singer” in this story about a guy who falls for a young woman with short-term memory loss, so every time they meet is like the first time. The 2 Hollywood savvy stars co-produced the film.
• “Tupac: Resurrection” (Documentary – DVD): The definitive film about one of the best-selling rap artists of all-time, exploring his life through his own words and music. Features never before seen concert footage, private home movies and excerpts from his poetry and journals.
• “Spartan” (Spy Thriller – DVD): Val Kilmer plays a veteran US government special op who stumbles onto a white slavery ring while assigned to find the daughter of a high-ranking official. Derek Luke & William H Macy co-star.
• “1 Night In Paris” (Amateur Sex – DVD/VHS): This ‘extended’ version of the Paris Hilton sex tape in both hardcore and softcore versions includes 4 ‘bonus scenes’ with over 1 hour of never before seen footage. Again this video has interesting timing, as her 2nd season of “The Simple Life” kicks off TOMORROW.
POPULAR PRESENTS FOR POP:
73% of us will buy Dad a card for “Father’s Day”, 40% apparel, and 34% dinner.
– International Mass Retail Association poll
POPULAR PRESENTS FOR GRADS:
A boob job is the latest must-have on your teen daughter’s graduation list. The number of 18-year-olds who underwent breast-implant surgery nearly tripled LAST YEAR – from 3,872 in 2002 to 11,326 in 2003, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. There is a trend developing in which parents are giving implants as a grad gift. It costs almost as much as a car – $3,500 to $7,000!
– “NY Post”
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT … ALMOST:
Psychologists at Tufts University in Boston say it only takes 2 seconds for mutual attraction to take hold between strangers. Researchers perused video recordings of hundreds of subjects introduced to a stranger for the first time to note reactions otherwise too subtle to be noticed. The results – within 2 seconds of meeting someone interesting, our bodies begin to change posture. (It’s a bad sign for your love life if the posture change includes – leaving.)
– “Times of London”
COLORS LOOK BRIGHTEST WHEN WE’RE 25:
Researchers at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, who are using brain waves to study color vision in children, say the ability to distinguish between different hues varies with age. Researcher Catherine Suttle of the School of Optometry & Vision Science says color sensitivity is at its highest at about age 25, then starts to decline with age. (Maybe that’s why a lot of ‘mature women’ have blue hair?)

FANTASTIC FARE:
A computer glitch resulted in $61 round-trip tickets to Iceland for well over 100 people who happened to notice the bargain on the cheaptickets.com Website, according to the Iceland Tourist Board. The fare, inadvertently posted MAY 25th for a day-and-a-half, is less than 10% of the normal cost of a typical summer tour ticket, which runs about $787. (The good news is – it only cost 60 bucks. The bad news is – you’re going to Iceland!)
– “Chicago Sun-Times”
PRUNE FINGERS ARE GOOD:
A new study reveals that examining a person’s fingers after soaking them in liquid could be an effective method of checking the condition of a person’s nerves. Scientists at the National University of Singapore have found that the more wrinkled the fingers get, the healthier the nerves are.
– “The Straits Times”
TIME TRAVELING:
Now here’s a cool idea. A couple in Washington state has buried 10 time capsules in remote wilderness areas for their grandsons (now aged 3 to 11) to go find when they grow up. The idea is to entice the lads to leave the city at some point and experience the great outdoors, using GPS devices to retrieve the treasures. Just to make sure they’re interested, each capsule contains valuables. (What would you put in a capsule for your grandkids?
– “Seattle Post-Intelligencer”
NEVER WASH YOUR BIRD:
Britain’s Food & Drink Federation has warned that rinsing a chicken under the tap may seem like a sensible and hygienic thing to do – but it’s not! It can spread any bacteria on the chicken to nearby surfaces and foods. Food safety experts say that rinsing poultry is unnecessary because the cooking process kills food poisoning bacteria. In fact, rinsing the bird under the tap actually splashes any bacteria on the bird onto nearby taps, kitchen surfaces and foods.

NEW BS GIZMOS & GADGETS:
• Japanese toilet-maker Toto has developed the hi-tech ‘Neorest’ toilet that features a wireless remote to raise or lower the seat, a built-in deodorizer, a warm-air dryer, as well as water temperature, pressure and massaging options. The ‘bottom’ line – $5,000.
• Mommy won’t be ‘making the windows laugh’ when she cleans them much longer. The Pilkington Co has come up with windows that clean themselves. New ‘Activ’ glass has an extremely thin coating of titanium oxide which breaks down dirt when it reacts to daylight. Then when water hits it, the dirt just slides off. (Leaving a puddle of mud on the floor.)
• A sampling of homeowners in Anaheim CA are currently testing a new blend of fake grass to see if it significantly reduces water use. If the program is successful, the city will offer rebates to citizens who permanently install the faux ground cover. The downside – it costs about 7 times more than regular sod. (But no mowing … ever. Hurray!)
• THIS SUMMER Duncan Toys will introduce a new ‘luxury yo-yo’ made of magnesium sulfate alloy milled to fine tolerance and featuring ceramic ball bearings to reduce friction and increase ‘sleep time’ (when the yo-yo is at the end of its string) up to 14 minutes. Only 200 ‘Freehand M-Gs’ will be made and sold each year – at $400 a pop!
FOR THE RECORD:
18-year-old Welsh singer Charlotte Church plans to wear the ‘Most Expensive Dress’ ever made to NEXT MONTH’s British premiere of the movie “Spider-Man 2″. It will be a black lace outfit interwoven with diamonds – $9 million-worth!
BS AMAZING FACT:
In a lifetime, the average person has sex 2,500 times with 5 different people, but only falls in love … twice.
