BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Joe Lara, who played Tarzan in the early 1990s television series “Tarzan: The Epic Adventures”, and his wife, Church diet guru Gwen Lara, were among seven people killed when a private jet crashed Saturday near Nashville. Tarzan: The Epic Adventures was an American adventure drama series that aired for one season in syndication from 1996 to 1997. Joe Lara was 58 and Gwen was 66.

★ “Blue’s Clues & You” has just put out a sing-along for kids that features an animated version of a “RuPaul’s Drag Race” star, who leads a song about Pride Month and inclusivity. Nickelodeon posted the video Friday, ahead of today’s beginning of Pride Month, showing a cartoon version of “Drag Race” fan fave Nina West leading on vocals — narrating a parade that’s passing her in the background. The song touches on the makeup of different families that fall under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, including households with two dads, two moms, non-binary children and more. ★ “Jeopardy!” has honored 5-time champion Brayden Smith, who appeared on the program earlier this year. Smith would have competed in the Tournament of Champions series had it not been for his untimely death. In tribute to Smith, the quiz show has released a video of Jeopardy! guest host Buzzy Cohen remembering the 24-year-old, who died from surgery complications. Smith was hailed by Jeopardy! fans as Alex Trebek’s last great champion, as he was the final contestant to go on a victory run during Trebek’s long tenure as host.

★ After a brutal year for the movie theater business, the North American box office is finally showing signs of life again. That’s mostly thanks to John Krasinski’s post-apocalyptic thriller “A Quiet Place Part II.” The sequel collected a roaring $48 million between Friday and Sunday, exceeding expectations and posting the biggest three-day haul of the pandemic era.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Nicki Minaj — Thanks to 3 new debuts, she has further extended her record as the woman with the most songs to reach Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, now with 114. The new entries include ‘Seeing Green’, with Drake and Lil Wayne, at #8. That song is her 32nd to reach the top 10, passing Janet Jackson for the second-most in the chart’s history.
• BTS, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber — Segments featuring them have been cut from the “Friends” reunion special in China. Censors decided not to air Gaga’s ‘Smelly Cat’ duet with Lisa Kudrow, a tribute from K-pop band BTS nor Bieber’s appearance because those artists have apparently insulted the nation in the past.
• Mary J. Blige — was surrounded by fans at Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater on Friday, as she was inducted into the iconic venue’s Walk of Fame, joining legends such as Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, James Brown and Patti LaBelle. While accepting the honor, she teased her upcoming “My Life” documentary, set to premiere next month.
• Smashing Pumpkins – Their debut album “Gish” turned 30 last week, and to celebrate, the band announced its first archival release: “Live in Japan, 1992”. The limited-edition album will be released as a double LP on purple swirl, 180g vinyl. Pre-order now at https://madamezuzus.com/
• The Rolling Stones — have released new lyric videos for the 1968 classic ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’ and its B-side, ‘Child of the Moon’. The band has also digitally rereleased the songs as a single, newly remastered by legendary mastering engineer Bob Ludwig. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/67cfurts
• Foreigner – Former singer Lou Gramm has released: “Questions And Answers: The Atlantic Anthology 1987-1989”, a 3-CD collection containing his 2 solo albums recorded during that time frame, and a disc featuring alternate mixes, single versions and an interview from the era.
• Jimmie Allen — is a married man! He married his fiancée, Alexis Gale, last Thursday. Guests included Darius Rucker, Tyler Rich and his wife Sabina Gadecki and Chuck Wicks and his wife Kasi, who is Jason Aldean’s sister. The location of the nuptials has not been disclosed. Allen also sang the National Anthem at Sunday’s Indy 500, to rave reviews.
• Brooks & Dunn – Birthday boy Ronnie Dunn said in recent interview that he wasn’t very interested in cutting a cover of BW Stevenson’s ‘My Maria’ when the idea was first presented to him. Quote: “I was hesitant to do it because I thought, ‘Oh man, it’s just that falsetto thing. It’s a rock song, in my opinion. And I was very much wrong.” The song reached #1 for the duo in 1996, and won them a Grammy.

SHOOTING THE BULL

A BOX OF CHOCOLATE…CICADAS:
The cicadas are coming! Chocolate ones! While experts estimate that trillions of Brood X cicadas will rise from underground and appear in the Eastern and Central US this summer, Maryland candy store “ChouQuette Chocolates & Confections” is selling chocolate-covered cicadas. Last month, the Bethesda-based confectioner shared an Instagram post on how it’s cooking up and sweetening the insects, a 7-step process. The cicadas need to first be collected, frozen, boiled and oiled before they can be placed in an air fryer. Once the bugs are cooked and cooled, they can be covered in melted chocolate. When the chocolate has hardened, they can be served like any other chocolate-covered snack – unless of course you prefer your cicadas fondue-style. Some restaurants and chefs throughout the country have been sharing their own cicada menu items and recipes in recent weeks as countless Brood X cicadas have begun to emerge.
(Now THAT is a truly American solution to a problem: Eat it!)
(Why would someone ruin a perfectly tasty snack with…chocolate?)

FOUNTAIN OF 3-YEARS AGO:
A scientific study has found that it is actually possible to make yourself 3 years ‘younger’ in just 8 weeks through simple diet and lifestyle changes. In the clinical trial by Helfgott Research Institute and Yale, Researchers monitored the results of a treatment program focusing on diet, sleep, exercise, relaxation guidance, and supplemental nutrients. The program was designed to target a specific biological mechanism called DNA methylation, the pattern of accumulating damage leading to greater and greater loss of cell function. The results show committing to these lifestyle changes produced “statistically significant” reductions in the biological aging of cells. The scientists say their study is unique in its use of a safe, non-pharmaceutical dietary and lifestyle program, and the extent of the age reduction observed. They plan to carry out a larger study which they expect will corroborate their findings.
(Why not? They’ve got time!)
(It’s like that old saying: “If someone came up with a pill that had the same benefits as a healthy diet and exercise, it would be called a “miracle”!)
(I think I aged myself about 3 years on the weekend…)

“WORKING” FROM HOME
When you’re working from home, what are you REALLY doing? According to a recent survey, while 76% of those working from home spend more than four hours each day focused on work, 40% of participants said they spend four or more hours away from their computers. Other highlights of the study of Americans commissioned by e-conolight:
• 44% have been reprimanded at least once for getting off-task, and 39% have been let go from their jobs for doing non-work-related activities.
• About 50% have worked for another company while on the clock with their employer.
• 77% shop online, while on the clock at least once a week.
• Almost 50% have had an alcoholic drink
• About 60% have taken a nap
• 42% have been on a date
• 41% have had sex
(And I feel guilty scrolling Facebook for 10 minutes!)

WORDS SMART PEOPLE USE IN CASUAL CONVERSATION:
⇒ Perfunctory:  It sounds smart but it means someone was careless. It can be used to describe an action taken that was sloppy, rushed or badly done. (So, it doesn’t mean “perfect”? Excuse me, I need to change my quarterly report…)
⇒ Vitriol:  A word used when feedback is horrendous, often seen as cruel and bitter criticism. (Oh, like a Twitter comment!)
⇒ Quid pro quo:  Latin. Yes. Pretentious. Probably. But the phrase, meaning “something for something,” does tend to make you sound smart.
⇒ Fait accompli:  This one is French, meaning something that is complete before anyone has a say in the outcome. (Somehow, “Done deal” doesn’t sound quite as intelligent…)
⇒ Umbrage:  If you think the word “offense” is overused these days, try this one instead. It means the same thing, but sounds way more dignified. (No offense…)
⇒ Ubiquitous:  It means something that is literally everywhere. If something is ubiquitous, then everybody knows about it. Like the iPhone. (And crooked politicians…)
⇒ Gregarious:  Use this word instead of calling someone a “people person” or an extrovert. (Who just popped into your head? THAT person is gregarious!)
⇒ Draconian:  If something is draconian, it is super harsh or severe, usually in reference to laws or regulations.  (Also used in reference to job cuts, unfortunately…)
(What word did you slip into a conversation to make yourself look super-smart…and find out later that you totally misused it?)

DID YOU KNOW?
Scientists are zapping clouds with electricity to make rain in the parched United Arab Emirates. With an average of just 10cm of rainfall per year, the country has been funding science projects from around the world to try to make it rain. One involves using catapults to launch small unmanned aircraft which zap clouds with an electric charge. The custom-built drones will soon begin tests near Dubai, with the idea that charging droplets in clouds will make them more likely to fall as rain.
