BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
***UPDATE*** ★ Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have confirmed the arrival of their second child. The couple said Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, who was born on Friday at a hospital in Santa Barbara, CA, is “more than we could have ever imagined” and is now “settling in at home”. Harry and Meghan’s second child, who weighed 7lb 11oz, has been named after the family nickname for her great-grandmother, the Queen, while her middle name honors her late grandmother, the Princess of Wales. Lilibet is the couple’s second child, after Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, who turned 2 in May. She is 8th in line to the throne.

★ Lisa Banes, known for her work in “Cocktail” and “Gone Girl,” is in critical condition after being involved in a hit-and-run scooter accident on Friday in New York City. According to reports, the driver of the scooter ran a red light before hitting her, an indication that Banes had the right of way when crossing the street. A rep for the 65-year-old actor confirmed that Banes is in critical condition, but was unable to provide any specifics regarding the scope of her injuries. Police are investigating. Banes held recurring roles on “The King of Queens,” “Six Feet Under,” “Nashville” and “Royal Pains.” She starred as Bonnie in 1988’s “Cocktail” and played the mother of Rosamund Pike’s ‘Amy Elliott’ in 2014’s “Gone Girl.”

★ Judge Judy Sheindlin is adjourning from her hit daytime show after 25 years. But not before getting a few things off her chest. In a Wall Street Journal interview, Sheindlin said tensions with CBS made her toss in the towel on her long-running daytime courtroom reality show, mostly because CBS bought out her ownership of Judge Judy reruns, to stop her from shopping the show’s library. She also felt “disrespected” by CBS’s work on “Hot Bench”, another courtroom show she created in 2014. Some CBS stations bumped Hot Bench to make room for “The Drew Barrymore Show” Judge Judy is quoted as saying: “We had a nice marriage. It’s going to be a Bill and Melinda Gates divorce.”

★ Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis are reteaming to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their cult film classic “Thelma & Louise”. The Oscar-winning 1991 movie features the two actresses as best friends embarking on a wild American road trip. On June 18, Sarandon and Davis will host a special drive-in screening to commemorate the milestone, at Los Angeles’ iconic Greek Theatre. The pair will also sit down for a question-and-answer session about the movie. Proceeds will benefit the LA Regional Food Bank and The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.

★ Marilyn Monroe’s cookbooks are up for auction, and they’re expected to fetch up to $75,000. The books — “The New Fanny Farmer Boston Cooking-School Cook Book” and “The New Joy of Cooking” — were both published in the early 1950s, and are in decent shape, but of course, the content of the hardbacks aren’t the attraction. Several handwritten notes are included in the cookbooks, including a listing menu for Beef Bourguignon and marrow bone soup, a grocery list, and a deli business card on which Monroe wrote someone’s address on the back.

• Led Zeppelin – Their song ‘Whole Lotta Love’ has been named the greatest riff of all time by the readers of Total Guitar and Guitar World magazines. Rounding out the top 5, in order are: Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Crazy Train’, AC/DC’s ‘Back in Black’, Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water’, and Van Halen’s ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love’.

SHOOTING THE BULL

WORTH A SHOT:
Many US states have launched some sort of a vaccine lottery to encourage people to be vaccinated against COVID-19. In Ohio, a random entrant each week wins a million dollars. Now, West Virginia has decided to get in on the action, and the Mountain State’s version screams “‘Murica!” To be clear, this isn’t a drawing for the privilege of receiving the shot. There are lots of those to go around. This is a lottery designed to get people excited to go GET vaccinated in hopes of winning a prize. And West Virginia’s prizes are awesome. The state will hold twice-weekly drawings between June 20-Aug. 4 for $1 million.  But it’s some of the other prizes that are getting all of the attention. Among them:
• One grand prize of just under $1.6 million
• $588,000 (second prize)
• 2 Ford F-150 Pickup Trucks with Rocky Ridge Lift Kits (value $88K each)
• 5 lifetime Hunting and Fishing Licenses
• 25 weekend getaways to West Virginia State Parks
• 10 custom rifles and shotguns
• 2 full scholarships to West Virginia schools
And where is the money for these unique prizes coming from? Federal relief funds. That’s right. Taxpayers.
(I don’t want to rain on the Governor’s parade, but I’m gonna say that 90% of West Virginians already HAVE a Ford F-150 with a lift kit….AND a hunting license!)
(Is this because if you choose not to get the jab, you’re already IN a lottery?)
(I guess the lesson from all this is that if you want to shoot, you need to get the shot!)

PUPPY DOG EYES:
There is a scientific reason puppies steal your heart from the moment you first see them. According to new research, puppies are pretty much born ready to interact with people. A team at the Arizona Animal Cognition Center evaluated 375 puppies that were all about 8 weeks old, for things like eye contact and following physical cues, such as pointing. According to lead author Emily Bray: “Puppies will look at and return a person’s social gaze and successfully use information given by that person in a social context from a very young age.” And that happens even before the pup has any extensive experience with people. It is thought that how willing a puppy is to make and maintain eye contact is a good predictor of whether it will someday make a successful service dog.
(Wow. Playing with puppies — Tough job, but someone has to do it!)
(Also an easy way for a puppy to steal your heart: Snuggle with your toddler!)
(Yet, somehow, they manage to ignore you completely when you tell them to stop rolling in poo…)

KEEPING YOU POSTED:
The world’s most unique and expensive stamp is expected to fetch up to $15 million at auction tomorrow. Sotheby’s New York will host the sale of the coveted British Guiana One-Cent Magenta, known as “the Mona Lisa of Philately.” It is owned by footwear tycoon Stuart Weitzman, who plans to donate the proceeds to charity. Revered among collectors as the only one of its kind, the octagon-shaped stamp was produced in 1856 in Guiana, the former British colony now called Guyana, on a printer usually reserved for newspapers. The emergency run was authorized after a delivery of stamps failed to materialize. The One-Cent Magenta is the only 19th century stamp missing from the British and Commonwealth Collection of Queen Elizabeth II. Her grandfather, George V, tried to buy it twice, but was thwarted both times. Weitzman bought the stamp at auction in 2014, for a then-record $9.48 million.
(I heard about this last week. Is this a re-post?)
(Never mind the stamp. If this guy has money like that to throw around, I want to see his shoes!)

GROSS FOODS THAT PEOPLE ACTUALLY EAT:

(***Preview for . . . ummmm . . . taste . . .***)
➢ Hákarl:  It’s the national dish of Iceland. Essentially, it’s Greenland shark that’s been left to rot in the ground for several months. Next, it is hung to dry for a few months before serving. Why? Greenland shark flesh is poisonous before being given this treatment. (And it’s not AFTER??)
➢ Balut:  In the Philippines, some enjoy this dish of fertilized duck eggs with a partially developed embryo inside. After incubating for 2-3 weeks, they are boiled or steamed, before being served, usually with some kind of a sauce. And yes, some eggs contain partially-developed bones, which will be “firm but tender” after cooking.
➢ Milt:  Basically, it’s fish sperm. It’s consumed in Japan, Korea, Russia, Nordic countries, and the UK. Milt can be eaten fried or raw. (Never will I look at my Uncle Milt the same way…!)
➢ Century Eggs:  In Asia, many enjoy chicken, duck, or quail eggs, placed into a mixture of clay, ash, salt, quicklime, and rice hulls. After curing for a few months, they come out looking pretty funky: The yolk turns into a greenish-gray mass, while the white becomes a brown, translucent jelly. They have an intense salty flavor.
➢ (***Caution***) Rocky Mountain Oysters:  Yup. Bull testicles, skinned and pounded flat. They’re given a nice coating of flour, salt and pepper, before being deep-fried and served. (And yes, several towns hold “testicle festivals”!)
➢ Casu Martzu:  It’s a Sardinian fermented sheep’s milk cheese. Actually, more like cheese that has entered a state of decomposition. And that’s not all. Don’t forget the maggots. Casu martzu is infested with fly larvae that you’re supposed to eat with it. Don’t let the maggots leap out of the cheese — and you want the maggots alive, because if they’re dead, Sardinians will tell you that the cheese is no longer edible. (Truly a subjective term…)

DID YOU KNOW?
According to a survey, the table is becoming a less popular place to eat. Nearly 75% said they grew up typically eating dinner at a kitchen table, but only about half do so now. 30% cited the couch as their primary at-home eating location, and 17% usually eat their meals in the bedroom.

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Thank God It’s Monday”, all about seeing Monday as a positive day, rather than a negative day. After all, while Monday can be a struggle for a lot of people, it can help to try and see this day from a different perspective. (To celebrate, how about some Chocolate Ice Cream…)

• “Chocolate Ice Cream Day”, celebrating one of the most popular flavors, but not THE most popular. That honor still goes to vanilla, favorite of 29%. Chocolate is runner-up at 9%.

• “VCR Day”, honoring the TV video recorder, introduced on this day in 1975 (The “Sony Betamax”). Not many homes still have one hidden away in a closet or basement anymore. But how many of us still have VHS tapes – with nothing to play them on?

• “Daniel Boone Day”, On June 7, 1769, frontiersman Daniel Boone first saw the forests and valleys of present-day Kentucky. He is largely credited with exploration and settlement of that state. Contrary to the coonskin cap-wearing stereotype, Boone preferred a felt hat.

• “June Bug Day”, a member of the Phyllophaga genus, which consists of over 260 species of scarab beetles, which tend to be most visibly active in June. This is because they emerge from the ground this time of year to search for food and a mate. They may have been in the ground as larvae for up to 3 years.
