BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Amber Heard does not have the cash. Her lawyer Elaine Bredehoft said on the “Today” show that Heard doesn’t have the means to pay $10.35 million in damages to ex-husband Johnny Depp following their trial verdict on Wednesday. When asked whether her client would be able to pay the amount, said, “Oh, no, absolutely not.” Bredehoft also went into detail about how she believes her client was “demonized” during the trial and that internet favor was “absolutely” in Depp’s corner, and she feels it ultimately affected the outcome of the case. The lawyer said that Heard “absolutely” plans to appeal the verdict, and “she has some excellent grounds for it.”

★ LeVar Burton says he didn’t get the “Jeopardy!” hosting gig because “The fix was in”. Despite numerous fan campaigns to have the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Reading Rainbow” star take over the full-time gig following Alex Trebek’s death, the show went in another direction. Although Burton has since said that he’s “really happy with the way things worked out,” he talked about the “humiliation” of not being offered the job in a recent interview. He called Jeopardy! his “favorite game show,” and said he thought he was “well-suited” for the hosting gig, but “as it turns out, it really wasn’t a competition, after all, the fix was in.” He continued: “In the fullness of time, everything will be revealed.”

★ Doja Cat leads the nominations for the 2022 BET Awards with a total of 6 mentions, including best female R&B/pop artist and best female hip-hop artist. Blige and Tems earned 3 apiece. The awards, which honor “creative expression and Black excellence across music, television, film and sports, will be handed out at the 2022 BET Awards ceremony, live on June 26 from the Microsoft Theater in LA. Taraji P. Henson will host.

★ “Star Wars” fans were given a treat Wednesday when Disney+ dropped the newest episode of “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” starring Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen. The episode offered viewers their first look at ‘Darth Vader’ — played by Christensen, who reprised the role for the first time since 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” But the big moment was when it was revealed that the person voicing the Dark Lord was none other than James Earl Jones. The 90-year-old has voiced the iconic villain since “A New Hope” debuted in 1977. Fans of the franchise went wild at the re-emergence of Jones’ deep, distinguished voice, with one excited Twitter user writing: “VADER IS BACK! THE Darth Vader!!! Hayden Christensen & James Earl Jones!! Absolute goosebumps! This will be a day long remembered.”

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• BTS – visited the White House on Tuesday, on the last day of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. During their sit-down in the Oval Office with President Biden, they discussed each other’s roles in raising awareness around the recent surge in anti-Asian hate crimes. The group also filmed “digital content” for White House social media channels.
• Nicki Minaj — shared the news Tuesday that she’s become the global ambassador for MaximBet, the sports betting lifestyle brand launched by Maxim last year. As part of the deal, she becomes creative director for Maxim magazine and will collaborate with MaximBet on merchandise, events, fan experiences, branding and more.
• The Rolling Stones – kicked off their 60th anniversary “Sixty Tour” in Spain on Wed. What does it take for rockers in their late 70s to get ready for the stage? The Sun reports: “Mick likes to work out with his personal trainer before each show, so they have a fully equipped workout room ready for him. Ronnie and Keith have a special ‘tuning room’ where they jam.” The group also has a yoga room.
• Van Halen — David Lee Roth has hinted that he will take part in an all-star Van Halen tribute with Alex Van Halen and Joe Satriani. When asked about it, Roth, who announced he was stepping away from the stage in October, said: “How many times did Rocky retire? Seven…How many times did Rambo have to come out of retirement in order to make the sequel? I’m only in the middle of my first retirement.”
• Thomas Rhett – Celebrated ‘Slow Down Summer’ becoming his 19th #1 hit with a family trip to the beach. He posted video, thanking everyone involved, including fans. Where did inspiration for the song come from? “We were half fly fishing and half trying to write songs. We didn’t really know what to write. I noticed the leaves were changing and someone said, ‘I wish summer would slow down.’ LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2h5u3d3e

ONE LESS SPAIN IN THE BUTT:
If you’ve ever uttered the phrase, “I just want to talk to a human” while hopelessly navigating your way through a business’s computerized phone system, then you’re going to like this: Spain’s government wants to end those nerve-shattering, one-sided conversations by making it mandatory for companies to offer a real, flesh-and-blood customer service worker when requested by a caller. That’s one of a number of measures included in a customer service bill presented by Spain’s coalition government this week. It will need the approval parliament before it can become law. Providers of basic services, such as utilities, phone and internet, will have to offer customer service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All other companies will have to provide customer service during working hours. The bill also seeks to do away with long wait times by forcing companies to answer calls within 3 minutes. Consumption Minister Alberto Garzón said: “These are difficulties which unfortunately waste an enormous among of energy, time and money.” Fines for breaking the law will range from 150 euros to 100,000 euros (US $160-$106,000).
(There’s probably no greater irony than calling the phone company, and not being able to talk to a person!)
(We wanted to find out when these measures will come into effect, but Garzón couldn’t be reached for comment!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢A 78-year-old California man walked across the stage alongside his high school’s class of 2022 to accept a diploma that spent 60 years locked away in a filing cabinet. Ted Sams was prevented from graduating in 1962 because he was suspended 5 days before the end of the semester and missed a final exam. He made up the exam over the summer, but was told he wouldn’t be given his diploma until he paid $4.80 for a book he failed to return. Sams’ old school, San Gabriel High School, invited him to finally accept his diploma at this year’s graduation ceremony. He was presented with his original diploma, which had spent the previous 60 years locked away in a filing cabinet at the school. (He’s currently updating his resume to indicate that he’s now a “high school graduate”!)
➢ The distinctive (and pungent, to some) smell of Vegemite wafting from an Australian factory has been declared of “significant” heritage value. The City of Melbourne council made a unanimous decision to include scent on a statement of significance for the factory – at 1 Vegemite Way in Fishermans Bend. Such a statement provides special heritage recognitions for important sites. Last year, the council stopped short of declaring the Vegemite smell “significant” when it recognized its heritage value in a bid to ensure no future development there was put in jeopardy. But during a meeting on Tuesday, deputy lord mayor, Nicholas Reece said its recognition did not mean the smell “needs to be protected”. (And trust me, the smell from a Vegemite factory IS “significant”!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Today is “National Egg Day”, and an egg a day just might keep heart disease away, according to research. Eggs are chock-full of essential nutrients. Despite that, they also contain a lot of cholesterol. And scientists have debated for decades whether eggs are more beneficial or harmful to heart health. In an attempt at answering that question, a 2018 study of 500,000 adults carried out by researchers at the University of Peking in Beijing, China concluded that daily egg consumption (roughly one per day) results in lower heart disease and stroke risk. (How egg-citing is that?)

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Repeat Day” (Again??!!??), an annual opportunity to do things over again … just because you want to. It’s a good excuse to ‘double-snack’ and give a re-do to other fun activities. By the way, it’s “Repeat Day” …
• On the other hand, it’s also “National Itch Day”. Have you ever had the ‘itch’ to just do something different? Today is the day to do that. Or maybe they mean this more literally. Scratch away, my itchy friend!!
• “Donut Day”, honoring the Salvation Army ‘Lassies’ of WWI who served donuts to thousands-upon-thousands of soldiers. It’s now used as a fund-raiser for the Sally Ann’s causes. Many donut stores offer freebies today. The official dictionary spelling of the word is “doughnut.” The Americanized spelling of “donut” caught on in the late 1900s. (Thanks, Homer! And remember, it’s also “Repeat Day”, so have 2!)
• “Chocolate Macaroon Day”, with a rich creamy chocolate filling and a light coating, they’re the perfect combination of textures. Most recipes call for egg whites (usually whipped to stiff peaks), with ground or powdered seeds, generally almonds or nuts. Alternatively, coconuts can be used.
• “National Egg Day”, a terrific source of protein and vitamin D, which makes them one of the healthiest breakfast foods. Did you know that there are more than 100 ways to cook an egg? (Have an egg-cellent Egg Day!) [***See “Did You Know?”, above***]
• “National Gun Violence Awareness Day” (in the US), to raise awareness about gun violence and to fight for a future that is free of it. National Gun Violence Day is a nationwide movement that also honors the lives lost due to gun violence, and those wounded by it. LINK: https://wearorange.org/
SATURDAY-
• “Cheese Day”, celebrated on the anniversary of the creation of Roquefort cheese, made from ewes’ milk and ripened in a cave near Roquefort, France in the year 1070. It’s the perfect excuse to indulge yourself with a slice of your favorite. (If I could just get this wrapper off…)
• “Hug Your Cat Day”, a day to realize that felines need affection, even though they act like they don’t want it.
• “Old Maid’s Day”, a truly outdated observance initiated in 1948 for unmarried women over age 35. These days 35 is sometimes when a woman begins THINKING about having kids (and when a man begins thinking about DATING “kids”).
• “Shopping Cart Day”, invented in 1937 by Oklahoma’s Sylvian Goldman (the next day, 27 of them are found abandoned behind his apartment building)
• “International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression”, a UN observance established in 1982. There are approximately 50 million uprooted refugees around-the-world who have sought safety in another country. Around half of them are children.
• “National Family Recreation Day”, and being that it is also “National Trails Day” and “National Learn to Row Day”, I’m thinking there are some obvious cross-promotional opportunities here . . .
SUNDAY-
• “Hot Air Balloon Day”, commemorating the first hot air balloon flight, by the Montgolfier Brothers in Annonay, France in 1783. (They lost their entire investment due to inflation!)
• World Environment Day”, an annual event since 1972. The 2022 theme is “Only One Earth”. This is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions across the world. This year it is hosted by Sweden. LINK: https://www.worldenvironmentday.global/
• “Gingerbread Day”, the term “gingerbread” originally referred to preserved ginger, later referring to a confection made up of honey and spices. While most are familiar with the gingerbread house at Christmas, you might also want to try some delicious gingerbread bread, cake, bars, biscuit and cookie recipes that are perfect any time of the year.
• “Apple II Day”, celebrating this day in 1977 when the Apple II computer was released. A hulking beige mammoth with 4KB of RAM (upgradeable to a whopping 48KB), the Apple II was the computer that defined Apple for a generation. At $1,298, it cost the equivalent of 3 iPads today — even though it seemed a total bargain at the time.
• Attitude Day”. Attitudes are contagious … is yours worth catching? Today, we appreciate those whose attitude makes those around them happy. (It’s our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome.)
• “Cancer Survivors Day”, the 35th annual celebration of life on the 1st Sunday in June. LINK: http://www.ncsdf.org
• “National Veggie Burgers Day”, but save some room, because it’s also “Sausage Roll Day”, and “National Frozen Yogurt Day”.
