Sheet For Brains!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Queen Elizabeth II made a surprise appearance in a comedy sketch with Paddington Bear during a star-studded Platinum Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace. The rock group Queen opened the musical performances, followed by Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Duran Duran and more. The Queen did not watch the Platinum Party at the Palace in person, however. The 96-year-old has been experiencing mobility problems, and also pulled out of Friday’s thanksgiving service. But in an echo of her appearance in a sketch with James Bond for the London Olympics in 2012, she had pre-recorded a 2½ minute comedy segment in which she offered tea to Paddington, and showed him a marmalade sandwich she keeps in her handbag. In his speech, Prince Charles joked that that his mother was “watching the celebrations with much emotion, having I hope finished her marmalade sandwich”. The Queen did make an unexpected appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on Sunday, as part of the final day of celebrations to mark her historic 70-year reign. ★ “Top Gun: Maverick” continues to fly high. With no major wide releases over the weekend, Tom Cruise’s latest continued to dominate the box office with a $25 million gross on its second Friday and an incredible estimated $84.5 million second weekend total. Not only is that just a 33% drop from Maverick’s $127 million 3-day opening, it’s also higher than the opening weekend of every other film in Cruise’s career, including all those “Mission: Impossible” movies. “Top Gun: Maverick” was expected to see its domestic total soar to $290 million by the end of the weekend, already making it the top domestic grosser of Cruise’s career before inflation adjustment.

★ Bhagavan “Doc” Antle, who was featured on the first season of “Tiger King”, was arrested on Friday by the FBI. The reasons for his arrest in Horry County SC were not disclosed. Antle, who was a magician before he founded his first private zoo, now owns and runs Myrtle Beach Safari which features big cats and other endangered species. In 2020, he was charged with 2 felony counts related to wildlife trafficking. He has also been the subject of allegations about inappropriate relationships with minors, and has been accused of operating a cult at his Myrtle Beach business. Antle denies the claims. After his stint on Tiger King, he became the subject of Netflix’s “Tiger King: The Doc Antle Story”, released in 2021.

★ Stephen King is ready to release a sequel to one of his most popular titles. King told the host of “The Losers Club” podcast that he’s just completed a “story called ‘Rattlesnakes.’ And it involves, at one part, twins who are only 4 years old… falling into a rattlesnake pit. And the snakes get ’em. It’s a terrible scene.” He elaborated, saying that Rattlesnakes… is actually a sequel to “Cujo.” While you may be wondering how a story about snakes could be a direct sequel to a terrifying tale of a rabid dog, CinemaBlend notes that it could be more of a “spiritual sequel” to Cujo.

SHOOTING THE BULL

UBER FUBARS:
Uber has released its 6th annual “Lost and Found Index,” revealing some of the most common — and most unusual — items left behind in drivers’ vehicles. As you might expect, the most common items left behind in Uber vehicles during the past year were phones/cameras, wallets, keys, backpacks/purses, headphones/speakers, glasses, clothing, vaping devices, jewelry and IDs. And what – ahem — “unique” items were reported lost by passengers? Tater tots, a fingernail, “my grandma’s teeth,” 500 grams of caviar, a pizza costume, “a [expletive] painting of a moose,” a Billie Eilish ukulele, an employee of the month plaque, a Bernie Sanders fanny pack, a crochet strawberry, a bucket of slime, a brown tortoise and a “ball gag and stethoscope.” More than 40 riders lost their CPAP machines, more than 30 reported lost retainers, and 5 people reported lost dentures.
(Least popular thing to leave behind in a Uber? Your lunch, of course!)
(I’m already compiling a list of things to report lost in hopes of making NEXT year’s list!)

HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTH:
⇒ Most people would like to be tall — especially men. But they may want to reconsider, because scientists have found it could raise the risk of more than 100 diseases. Being tall has been linked in the past with some cancers and stroke, but researchers at VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System analyzed the genes of more than 280,000 people, and found that those considered “tall” are genetically more likely to suffer from 127 medical conditions, including skin infections and abscesses, chronic leg ulcers, bone infections and . . . erectile dysfunction. The study defined “tall” as being over 5 foot 9 [175cm]. (Where did they do the study…at the horse-racing track?)
⇒ Heavy drinkers are “healthier and happier” in their later years, according to a study. Researchers in Germany questioned hundreds of people aged over 60 at hospital for routine surgery about their mood and quality of life, and compared this with the amount of alcohol they drank. A third were categorized as those who drink “potentially unhealthy” quantities (drinking at least 4 nights a week, or regularly drinking the equivalent of 2 bottles of wine in a day). Those people were found to be slimmer, happier and more mobile than those who drank less or not at all. The study’s author says one explanation may be that higher alcohol consumption may lead to elevated mood, enhanced sociability and reduced stress. Experts warn that the study is observational – meaning cause and effect could not be determined. (I bet they didn’t ask those people early in the morning!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ A woman whose family fled to Britain to escape a war has closed her seaside hotel to tourists—so she can give Ukrainian refugees a place to stay. Nitsa Michael is no longer taking guests at the Seaward Hotel in Weston-super-Mare, England. Instead, she has rolled out the welcome mat to 22 Ukrainians, so far, providing a “home away from home”. Her family fled Cyprus following a Turkish invasion in 1974, and she wanted to do something to help people in the same ‘horror situation’, fleeing from Russian aggression in Ukraine. The 84-year-old says she “felt for them” and decided to help in a “big way”. Her daughter Michelle, who runs the hotel, says the 22 arrivals share meals and time together, “and basically they heal together.” The hotel has room for 48 more.
➢A man was welcomed with open arms by the people of Birmingham AL, so he invited the entire city to his wedding. 31-yeat-old Shahzeb Anwer has hyperparathyroidism, and couldn’t get the surgery he needed in Pakistan, so he arranged to have it done in Birmingham. Anwer posted on Facebook and Reddit groups, asking questions about everything from local culture to what clothes he should bring. Tips and info came flooding in, and Anwer told a reporter that “people responded in a way that I wouldn’t even expect from my own people in Pakistan.” Anwer’s surgery was successful, and when he returned home, he showed his appreciation for Birmingham’s residents by posting online an open invitation to his wedding on May 22. He says: “Birmingham treated me as their favored son. Birmingham has now become a part of my life.”

MAKE YOUR MORNINGS BETTER (EVEN MONDAYS):
According to experts . . .
☞ Prep the night before: Pack your bag, set out your clothes, make your lunch. (And my wife always makes fun of the little “clothing man” I make on the bedroom chair!)
☞ Start with a stretch:  It increases blood flow, and releases feel-good endorphins.
☞ Take on an easy challenge: Start your day with a mental exercise. Even Wordle works. It’ll kick-start your brain, and give you a sense of accomplishment. (Or of failure!)
☞ Move your body: Any kind of exercise is good. Even a little dance to give you a good shake-out. (I’ve got teenage girls. I do a little dance outside the bathroom every morning!)
☞ Give your phone a rest: Try something else first thing for a few days. You may notice you feel less anxious by avoiding messages, social media and news for the first hour.
☞ Stick to a routine: They’re proven to increase productivity, and can boost mental health if it’s manageable. (Not if it includes running out of gas every morning…)
☞ Express gratitude: Engaging in a daily habit of counting blessings causes a positive shift in mood. (I’m grateful for the snooze bu…Zzzzzzz….)
☞ Let go of what doesn’t work: You don’t need to get up at 5am to have a good morning. You also don’t need to start the day with a green juice, or immediately meditate. The best thing for you to do is to understand what works for you and what doesn’t.” (I know, but where else are the kids gonna live?)

DID YOU KNOW?
If all went well over the weekend, 83-year-old Japanese sailor Kenichi Horie will have set a record, becoming the world’s oldest solo yachtsman to sail non-stop across the Pacific Ocean. He set sail on his 19-foot sailboat, the Suntory Mermaid III, from San Francisco on March 27. The plan was to come home to an arrival ceremony in Nishinomiya city. This isn’t the first time Horie’s made maritime history. In 1962, at 23 years old, he became the first person to successfully make a non-stop journey across the Pacific Ocean — from Japan to California.
