Get Your BS Here, Hot ‘n Fresh!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ 65-year-old actor Richard Gere is said to be romancing an actress-and-socialite half his age. He & 32-year-old Spanish actress Alejandra Silva have reportedly been dating over a year. The couple stepped out together for the first time on the red carpet at the 61st Taormina Film Festival in Sicily last week and were also spotted on a yacht off the coast this week. The blonde beauty is the daughter of businessman Ignacio Silva, former VP of football club Real Madrid. Gere split from his actress wife Carey Lowell (54) in 2013 after 11 years together.

★ Record producer Scott Storch has filed for bankruptcy for a 2nd time after losing his entire $70-million fortune. Storch became one of the top producers in the music biz in the early 2000s, working with the likes of Beyoncé, Chris Brown, Christina Aguilera, Lil Wayne, Pink, and TI. But Storch famously blew his bucks on cars, houses, and drugs; previously filing for bankruptcy in 2009, the same year he checked into rehab for substance abuse. In newly-filed legal documents he claims to have only $3,600 left to his name, including clothing, a watch, and cash. He made just $10,000 last year.

★ Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey currently plays the President of the United States on the hit Netflix drama “House of Cards”, and now he and his producing partner Dana Brunetti are planning another Washington-based TV show called “The Resident”. The drama follows the relationships between White House staffers and the various first families that live there over the course of several administrations. FOX News Channel political commentator Megyn Kelly is serving as a co-executive producer on the project.

COMING ATTRACTIONS:
A BS selection of movies in the making …
• “The Last Witch Hunter” – The 1st movie doesn’t even hit cinemas until October and already  a sequel and a potential “Axe & Cross” franchise has been announced. Early screeners of the first film are said to have been impressive. It stars Vin Diesel as a witch hunter who is all that stands between humanity and the combined forces of the worst witches in history. Rose Leslie and Elijah Wood co-star.
• “Meg” – Filmmaker Eli Roth is in talks to direct an adaptation of the best-selling book “Meg: A Novel Of Deep Terror”. It centers on 2 men battling a prehistoric Megalodon shark off the coast of California, although reports suggest the film version will shift the location to China. The project was first put into development in 1997 by Disney, but was subsequently shelved.
• “Raised Eyebrows” – Rocker-turned horror filmmaker Rob Zombie is further branching out to direct a biopic about late comic lengend Groucho Marx. The project is based on Steve Stoliar’s 1996 book “Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho’s House”. Stoliar served as personal secretary to the leader of the Marx Bros for the final 3 years of his life.
• “Rampage” – Wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson will star in this bigscreen adaptation of a videogame. The “Furious 7” star will reunite with “San Andreas” producer Beau Flynn for the film, based on the 1980s Midway Arcade Game that featured 3 monsters – a gorilla, a lizard, and a wolf – that destroy cities and landmarks. Production on the project begins next year.
• “The Story of Mata Hari” – Brit director Sophie Fiennes is working on a biopic about the cunning courtesan convicted of spying for Germany during WWI. She was executed by a French firing squad in 1917. Fiennes says there are many misconceptions about Hari, real name Margarethe Zelle. Her story was the basis of 1985’s “Mata Hari”, starring Sylvia Kristel.

GOING UPSTREAM:
Google is launching a free version of its music streaming service Play Music. It already offers a subscription-based service, where users pay monthly to listen to an unlimited number of tracks. The free version will be made up of curated playlists designed for different times of the day and tailored towards what you are feeling or doing. It makes use of Songza, an app that Google bought a year ago. The new free service, initially rolling out exclusively in the US, will (unfortunately) include ads, similar to the Spotify model. (Dammit! It was just a matter of time before they screwed up Songza, formerly the best app in the music biz.)

SCIENTIFIC REASONS DRINKING BEER IS ACTUALLY GOOD FOR YOU:
✓ Helps you live longer. Virginia Tech researchers have found that moderate beer drinkers are 19% less likely to die during any given time period than those who never touch a drop.
✓ Good for your gut. A new book, “The Diet Myth”, claims that drinking Belgian beer is actually beneficial to development of gut bacteria, which can aid efficient digestion.
✓ Helps fight cancer. Xanthohumol – a flavonoid found in hops – is an antioxidant which inhibits cancer-causing enzymes.
✓ Keeps brain sharp. A study in the “New England Journal of Medicine” finds that women who have 1 alcoholic drink a day are less likely to experience declining mental faculties as they age.
✓ Prevents kidney stones. A recently published study finds that people who drink a moderate amount of beer are up to 41% less likely to develop kidney stones.
✓ Some beer is actually lo-cal. Guinness has released statistics showing that its heavy, dark brew is lower in calories than either orange juice or skimmed milk.
✓ Makes bones stronger. Beer is rich in dietary silicon, a key to building bone mineral density, according to a study in the “Journal of the Science of Food & Agriculture”.

HASTIER HORSES:
Racehorses are continuing to get quicker, according to a new study at Britain’s Exeter University of winning times spanning 165 years. The researchers say more work is required to determine whether the increased speed is due to breeding technique or changes in training and riding. Many in the industry had previously concluded that thoroughbreds had reached the limits of their speed, raising the question as to whether it was worth paying huge amounts of money to stud farms to breed winners. But the new study suggests that the average modern-day racehorse would beat one from the early ’90s by 7 lengths in a 6-furlong race. This could be due to the fact that horses are now being bred for speed rather than endurance. So younger colts are increasingly more effective at running shorter races. The study concludes there has been little, if any, improvement in average speed at middle and long distances. (How come any horse you put money on could be timed with a calendar?)
