SHOOTING THE BULL
NEWS OF THE WORLD:
⇒ China says it has achieved a new world record after scientists developed an “artificial sun.” The Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak generated a plasma temperature of 120 million °C (216 million °F) for 100 seconds, before cranking things up to 160 million °C (288 million °F) for a further 20 seconds. The device, at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is one of a number of artificial sun devices currently under construction as countries race to become the first to produce a reliable nuclear fusion reactor. (I’m not sure this is the type of thing people should be “racing” to make…)
⇒ Mexico is organizing a “mega raffle” of 22 properties scattered across the country that used to belong to crime boss Joaquín Guzmán (“El Chapo”). His luxury box at Aztec Stadium in the nation’s capital will also be drawn for. The grand prize is his giant compound in Tlalpan. The 10,000-square foot estate features 9 bedrooms and an indoor pool, and is valued at $4 million. The other properties (collectively worth $22 million) aren’t as glamorous, but anyone with a ticket will have the chance to become the proud new owner of the safehouse featuring a bathtub concealing the hidden tunnel he fled through naked while attempting to escape arrest. El Chapo is currently serving a life sentence. The raffle is scheduled for September 15. (And his next escape is scheduled for the 16th…)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A young Lamborghini owner in China got his 5 minutes of online fame by trying to barbecue meat with the car’s fiery exhaust — and incurring about $80,000 in repair costs. A viral video shows a group of men gathered around the orange Lamborghini Aventador (MSRP: $418,000), to witness the cooking of what might be the world’s most expensive pork. The driver keeps pressing the acceleration pedal of the parked car, while his smiling friend holds the skewer of meat to the exhaust, which spits flames as it is revved. What could go wrong? As it turns out, Lamborghinis’ extreme power makes them prone to overheating, at least when one keeps hitting the throttle while parked. No sooner does the guy start getting a nice char on his kebob, does the Lamborghini erupt in a cloud of smoke, sending him running. The Lamborghini appears to have overheated, dumping all of its coolant out on the floor. (Definitely NOT “well-done”!)
➢ An “invisible” sculpture created by Italian artist Salvatore Garau has been acquired by a private collector who paid a whopping 15,000 euros (US $18,300) for it at auction. Titled “I am,” the invisible work of art basically represents a void, a technically empty space that is actually occupied by the “energy” of the sculpture. But if it seems to you that the buyer walked away with nothing, you’d be wrong. He or she will receive a certificate of authenticity that proves “I Am” is the property of the buyer. (They forgot the words “A” and “Sucker”!)

DID YOU KNOW?
The term “YOLO”, meaning “You Only Live Once”, popularized in the Drake hit ‘The Motto’ in 2011, was actually pioneered by Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart in the early 1990s. According to Vanity Fair’s 2013 history on the term, YOLO’s origins, as a turn of phrase and acronym, began when Hart saw a brochure for a ranch in Sonoma County. He justified the property’s exorbitant asking price with a YOLO attitude, and after buying it, he actually ended up naming the property “YOLO”.

• “Cheese Day”, celebrated on the anniversary of the creation of Roquefort cheese, made from ewes’ milk and ripened in a cave near Roquefort, France in the year 1070. It’s the perfect excuse to indulge yourself with a slice of your favorite. (If I could just get this wrapper off…)
• “Hug Your Cat Day”, a day to realize that felines need affection even though they act like they don’t want it.

• “Shopping Cart Day”, invented in 1937 by Oklahoma’s Sylvian Goldman (the next day, 27 of them are found abandoned behind his apartment building)
• “International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression”, a UN observance established in 1982. There are approximately 50 million uprooted refugees around-the-world who have sought safety in another country. Around half of them are children.
• “Donut Day”, honoring the Salvation Army ‘Lassies’ of WWI who served donuts to thousands-upon-thousands of soldiers. It’s now used as a fund-raiser for the Sally Ann’s needy causes. Many donut stores offer freebies today. The official dictionary spelling of the word is “doughnut.” The Americanized spelling of “donut” caught on in the late 1900s. (Thanks, Homer!)

• “Moonshine Day”, Moonshine, white lightning, mountain dew, hooch, or Tennessee white whiskey is a high-proof distilled spirit, generally produced illicitly. The word is believed to come from the term “moonrakers” used for early English smugglers and the clandestine nature of their operations.
• “Apple II Day”, celebrating this day in 1977 when the Apple II computer was released. A hulking beige mammoth with 4KB of RAM (upgradeable to a whopping 48KB), the Apple II was the computer that defined Apple for a generation. At $1,298, it cost the equivalent of 3 iPads today — even though it seemed a total bargain at the time.

SUNDAY-
