You Really Know Your Sheet!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ A federal judge has granted Carole Baskin control of the zoo formerly owned by Joseph Maldonado-Passage, aka Joe Exotic from Netflix’s “Tiger King.” Baskin and Big Cat Rescue will soon have full control over Exotic’s former zoo properties in Oklahoma. The imprisoned star of the docuseries spent a large part of his career harassing Baskin in a brutal rivalry captured on camera. After escalating from video theatrics to threats, Exotic was arrested for two counts of murder-for-hire. Before he went to prison, Baskin sued Exotic for trademark infringement in 2013 after he repurposed and manipulated the Big Cat Rescue logo. Exotic was ordered to pay roughly $1 million. However, that money never fully made it to Baskin or her cats.

★ Kobe Bryant’s wife, Vanessa, is thanking the citizens of Los Angeles for sparing the beautiful murals all over the city of her husband and daughter — even as many other buildings and areas of the city were targeted during the protests. One person posted a picture of a mural without a scratch, and wrote “They know Kobe is off limits”. Incredibly, despite many areas of Los Angeles being tagged to support justice for George Floyd, none of the Kobe and Gigi murals were touched.

★ Jennifer Aniston is auctioning off one of her most iconic photos to raise funds for COVID-19 relief. She and photographer Mark Seliger are offering up a 1995 black and white nude portrait he took of the former “Friends” star. Proceeds from the sale of the portrait – and 24 others from Seliger — will go to NAFC Clinics, an organization which provides free coronavirus testing and care to the medically underserved. Portraits of stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Billie Eilish are also part of the auction.

★ Sharon Osborne recently claimed that her estranged sibling David Arden and his friends used to taunt her about her weight when she was younger, but David insists she is lying and said he wants nothing to do with her. He said: ”The fat shaming by me and my friends is complete fiction. With regards to me constantly trying to contact her, utter fantasy, it would be like me wanting to contact Hitler or Dracula. He went on to say: ”Mrs. Osbourne has left two messages on my phone in the last 10 years which I have retained for possible future use as valuable material for anyone carrying out research into psychopathy.”

The member of the Musicians Hall of Fame also played on George Jones’ ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today’,” George Strait’s ‘Amarillo by Morning’, and many other country standards. Capps was also a member of the Grand Ole Opry, playing lead guitar in the house band.

DOG’S LIFE:
When the pandemic began and many of us were introduced to the concept of self-quarantining, we all assumed that the one family member who would be most happy about the whole thing would be the dog. And science says we’d be right. According to Dr. Brian Hare, founder of the Duke Canine Cognition Center, your dog experiences a boost in Oxytocin, the “love hormone” when you are home more often to interact with him. And the constant contact and communication also activates the region of a dog’s brain that is responsible for motivation, reward and positive expectations. Why is this important? This helps prevent depression. But keep in mind that depending on your dog’s personality, he might be having difficulty adjusting to this new normal and may lead to him acting out a bit.
(Which explains where my bacon got to when I answered the phone this morning…)
(The cat, on the other hand, just assumes you’ve been fired…)
(Now would someone please explain to my dog that I cannot walk and feed him ALL DAY LONG…)

SHRINKING MOUSE POPULATION:
Are mice getting smaller? Researchers at the Florida Museum of Natural History say one of the continent’s most common mammals, the North American deer mouse, have been shrinking over the last 70 years. They analyzed seven decades worth of records on the rodent and found that they have been gradually decreasing in mass — and no one seems to know why. Experts haven’t been able to link the phenomenon to climate change or urbanization, but one theory is that the mice are adapting to better hide from humans.
(You would too, just to avoid hearing them scream like that!)
(Maybe its just cold out!)

JUST DO SOMETHING:
With the pandemic resulting in cancellation of most fitness classes, it seems that those who still want to work out have embraced solo fitness endeavors out of necessity. And running seems to be the latest trend. According to American market analysts, athletic shoe manufacturers are poised for big business in the wake of the pandemic. Google search trends for Brooks are up 83%, while searches for HOKA are up 65%, and Swiss start-up On Running (which counts Roger Federer as an investor) has seen searches rise 28%. But the big winner appears to be Nike Running, whose searches are outpacing them all, rising by 104% through May 24. Outside of running, outdoor solo or small group activities like biking and hiking are also likely to be beneficiaries from new post-COVID fitness trends. Downloads of the Nike Training Club app are up 510%, and cycling app Strava is up 222%.
(Running? Don’t these people have anything better to do? Oh. Never mind.)
(Yes, I typed in Brooks, but what I was trying to type was ‘cook’!)

SPEAKING HABITS THAT WILL MAKE YOU SOUND SMARTER:
☞ Work on your posture:  Standing or sitting straight, but with a relaxed spine, presents you as self-assured and puts you in a comfortable, confident mental and physical state. (Yeah…you should see us here in the studio…)
☞ Avoid mindless language:  Speaking in clichés, buzzwords or trying to use “smart” words without a correct sense of their meaning conveys a lack or original thought and puts listeners to sleep. (Seems to work for the boss, though…!)
☞ Speak loudly, not forcefully:  Projecting your voice takes practice, but speaking that way is a great asset in sounding like you know what you’re talking about. But don’t shout – it puts your listeners on edge. (Did you hear that, dear?)
☞ Pay close attention to your voice:  Listen to the dynamics used by speakers who engage you. And avoid annoying vocal habits like “uptalk” where your intonation rises making statements sound like questions, and “vocal fry” where words end in a raspy growl. Both convey insecurity and negativity.
☞ Don’t be afraid of silence:  Our natural tendency is to try to avoid lengthy pauses when speaking. But a well-placed pause adds emphasis and thoughtfulness to your speech. (I hope you’re just starting to realize what an awesome radio show you’re listening to!)
☞ Don’t weigh in unless you have something to add:  If you aren’t very familiar with the topic, try not to wade into the discussion. In these situations, it’s best to wait, or steer the conversation to familiar ground where you can speak knowledgably. (It’s been 15 years…and I’m still waiting!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Living near water may be the key to happiness. The scientifically-proven benefits of being near water include lower levels of stress and anxiety, an increased sense of well-being and happiness, and a lower heart and breathing rate. Aquatic therapists are even looking to the water to treat and manage PTSD, addiction, anxiety disorders, autism and more. Water boosts creativity, can enhance the quality of conversations and provides a backdrop to many important parts of living — like play, romance and grieving. However, this is all dependent on the water being safe, clean and healthy.
